If a child did not meet the minimum age requirement, but turned 5 years of age not later than December 1 of that school year, the district could enroll the child for that school year if the parent or legal guardian notified the district in writing that he or she intended to enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year. Kindergarten/Young Five enrollment packets will be available in the elementary buildings and at the Administration Offices on February 1. We look forward to welcoming our youngest students into the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District for the school year. KIDS AGAINST HUNGER Students in grades 3-5 are invited to join the Woodhaven Kiwanis Club and students from 5 other buildings as we work to pack meals for 35,000 people in one day. Our 2015 Kids Against Hunger Campaign is scheduled to take place at Bates Elementary School between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:45 pm on Saturday, February 6, FOLLOW THE GUDITH PTO ON FACEBOOK

Listed below are our definitions of and policies pertaining to attendance. A. Absence An absence is any day that a student misses school. B. Excused Absence Any medically documented absence, funeral days, or other absence approved by the attendance office will not be counted against the student in the ten (10) day limitation. Excessive Absences If a child accumulates 10 absences in a school year, the building administrator will send a letter to inform the parent/ guardian of this and of our concerns. If the child reaches 15 absences in a school year the building administrator will inform the local police department of a potential truancy issue. The police department will then contact or visit the child s home to discuss the truancy with the parents. If the absences reach 20 in a school year, referrals must be made to the Local Police Department and possibly, the Wayne County Prosecutor s Office. *Parents are encouraged not to take their children out of school for vacations. Vacation days are considered unexcused. C. TARDIES If a student arrives late for school (after the bell rings at 9:10) it is a tardy. After 10am the student will be marked absent for the morning. If a student is picked up early from school in the afternoon (before 3:50) the student will receive a tardy. If picked up before 2pm the student will be marked absent.

KIDS AGAINST HUNGER Feeding Children Around the World...and Around the Corner Saturday, February 6th 9:00am 12:45pm Hosted at: Bates Elementary School 3rd Grade: 9:00am-10:45am 4th Grade: 10:30am-12:30pm 5th Grade: 11:15am-1:00pm Once again this year, Gudith 3rd, 4th & 5th grade students will be participating in this worthwhile event to support those who are hungry, both locally and internationally!

4 CLASS NEWS Happy New Year from 1st Grade! We started the New Year by making our own resolutions. We read the book Squirrel's New Year's Resolutions by Pat Miller and discussed that resolutions are goals to better ourselves or help others. Each student made and shared their resolutions for Throughout the month of January, we also learned about civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. and his message of love, peace, freedom, and brotherhood. We are ending our month, by learning about Penguins!! Did you know there are 17 different kinds of penguins? The January Musician of the Month is Shareef Vaid. Congratulations Shareef! Third Grade Handbell students are learning to play the Boomwackers this year. Boomwackers are musical instruments in the percussion family that are tuned to musical pitches by length. The students have quickly learned how to play this fun instrument with an unusual name. 2nd grade: The second grade classes are looking forward to our upcoming field trips. We will travel to the high school to see a play on February 22nd and to The Henry Ford Museum on March 9th. Permission slips and details will be sent home soon. Fourth Grade News Students will be working on collecting research and presenting a report on a president this month. The reports will be due on February 17th. Students will give speeches as their president at the 4th Grade Wax Museum. The presentations will take place in the afternoon of February 19th. Students will be bringing home more information about their project this week. They will be encouraged to dress up and create props. Parents are invited to attend, we will be starting at approximately 1:30. Kids Against Hunger is next Saturday, February 6th, at Bates Elementary from 10:45-12:30 for fourth graders. Please return permission slips, hope to see you there! January Artist of the Month is David Neubacher is Mrs. Weitzel's 1st Grade class. Congratulations David!
