Assignments are made based on academic and behavioral data, with the best interest of the individual student considered first. The goal of developing positive communities, other criteria may include balancing the classes by ethnicity, gender, returning students, new students, and academic diversity. Attendance Requirements Students are required to maintain at least 90% attendance for each class period. Brookside Charter School expects that all students will be regular in attendance. Attendance is defined as the student s presence in the school from the start time of school through the dismissal time. Students who are tardy, truant, and/or leave school early lose attendance time. There is a direct relationship between school attendance and grades, leadership, and success in school. Parents/guardians should call the school if the student must be absent. Excessive absences may result in loss of academic credit, promotion or advancement to the next grade, and students may be required to attend summer school. In the event of a period of absence of three or more consecutive days, students returning to school shall provide a written explanation from a health care provider. Parent/guardians should follow these guidelines with regard to attendance:

5 Notify the school between 7:30am and 9:00 a.m. the morning of the absence by calling the Elementary or Middle School Office, not the Front Office. Provide a written note giving the student s name, date, and reason for absence when the student returns, if the parent has not notified the school; and Please schedule doctor, dental, and other appointments after school hours to ensure your child s regular attendance. Office Numbers: Elementary School: Ext. 2 Middle School: Ext. 3 Brookside Charter will adhere to the following steps with regards to excessive student absences: 3 Absences = Written Notification The Attendance Secretary will send written notification through, Registered Mail. If letter is returned, process will move to next step. 5 Absences = Parent Meeting- The Assistant Principal of Discipline will arrange for a parent meeting to discuss attendance concerns. After the third attempt to schedule a meeting, process will move to next step. 7 Absences = Citation Notification Letter Superintendent will send written notification, Registered Mail. Arrangements will be made to write a citation ordering parent/guardians to appear on the Truancy Docket at 10 am in B Court. 10 Absences = Referral to the Department of Social Services. (Does not apply for medically documented extended absences). Students missing ten (10) or more days in a semester are eligible to be immediately withdrawn. Examined on a case-by-case basis; 5 consecutive days of absence will result in immediate withdrawal from school and student placed on waiting list. All Absences and Tardies are calculated within a semester, examination of Absences and Tardies occurs on a case-by-case basis. Dress Code Children are not required to wear uniforms, please dress children in play clothes during summer months and in warm boots, mittens and slacks during winter months. Children may also wear sweaters or sweatshirts in the classrooms, but they may not wear clothing that they bring for outside activities. Brookside Charter School reserves the right to deem alcohol or tobacco advertising, profane language, or gestures depicting violence as inappropriate on clothing at school. The Board of Directors has adopted a dress code for the students of Brookside Charter School. The dress code for Brookside Charter School is designed to provide an optimum learning environment. Therefore, the following clothing is not permitted at Brookside Charter School: Unsafe Shoes any shoe that does not adequately cover the foot from toe to heel such as Flip-flops, open toed sandals, and other footwear that can allow possible injury. Bare midriffs, halter tops, low-cut necklines (Brookside Charter School s guideline is the straps must be 3 fingers wide; necklines must not allow any exposure)

6 Low-riding pants with skin/underwear showing, tagging or sagging pants, short skirts, short shorts (Brookside Charter School s guideline is the length of skirts or shorts must be below fingertips when arms are at the sides) Jeans with holes allowing inappropriate exposure Shirts allowing for the exposure of undergarments Hats, head scarves, visors, hoods, sweatbands in the school Suggestive wording on clothing including wording pertaining to drugs Students wearing leggings or other tight fitting pants must be wearing a shirt or top that provides sufficient coverage of their backside. Leggings cannot be see through. Children who do not adhere to the Brookside Charter School dress code will be sent to the Support Room until appropriate clothing is brought for them to wear, and repeat offenses will result in disciplinary action. Parents/guardians will be called to bring a belt, another pair of shoes, pants, or shirt, or pick up the child. If you are unsure regarding the appropriateness of the clothing, please make another choice.
