1 BLACKBERRY INTERNET SERVICE (BIS), BLACKBERRY ENTERPRISE SERVER (BES) INITIAL SETUP AND ACTIVATION IN THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON ENVIRONMENT PRE-BUYING RECOMMENDATIONS Before buying a BlackBerry device, please note the following: STEP 1 Coverage areas per cellular provider vary. It is highly recommended you check the coverage area at your home and office before you begin to buy any kind of cellular device. Cellular vendors provide coverage maps on their websites. They also provide data coverage maps such as GSM, GPRS or EDGE. Please see links below for your preferred cellular provider coverage maps: Verizon Wireless AT&T\Cingular Sprint\Nextel (Click on Coverage) T-Mobile STEP 2 Once you have selected your cellular provider, the next step is to select a BlackBerry device. It is important to note that Research in Motion (RIM) manufactures all BlackBerry devices. However, not all BlackBerry devices are the same. Some models can have problems like poor sound quality, static noise, speaker reverberation, etc. As an educated buyer reading reviews can help avoid such problems. Cnet.com is a very useful website to read user(s) and editor(s) review(s). STEP 3 The next step is to select the voice and data plan. Choose a voice plan and add on features of your liking such as text\picture messaging, ringtones, etc. Selecting the right data plan is the most important step for setting up (s) on your BlackBerry device. The most common mistake is selecting the wrong data plan for the BlackBerry device. It is very important you pay particular attention to the data plan details. You can select two different types of data plans depending on the type of service you use: 1. If you use any service that lets you IMAP or POP3, e.g. mail.uh.edu you can get the basic *Unlimited BlackBerry Internet\ Data Plan also known as BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). This type of plan is cheaper than the enterprise data plan, usually between $19.99 and $39.99, see cellular provider for pricing. This data plan may not be used with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). Most cellular providers will let you configure up to 10 accounts to your BlackBerry device. 2. The second type of data plan is the *BlackBerry Enterprise Internet\ Data Plan also known as BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). This data plan caters to BlackBerry users who use the UH Microsoft Exchange . This data plan is more expensive usually between $40.99 and $ Before you select

2 this data plan make sure that you are using UH Exchange , ask your local IT support person if you are unsure. BES is more expensive than BIS because a third party entity in this case UH piggy backs on the cellular vendor s network to push the to the device. The cost is shared between both parties. The cellular vendor is able to pass the cost to their customers. However, ITCS absorbs the cost of each BES user license and related network usage at this time. *Note: Please make sure the BlackBerry data plan has unlimited data, web access and service. Some cellular providers don t provide Short Message Service (SMS) or other add on services with the conventional BlackBerry data plan. TO RECAP Step 1 - You have checked the coverage area of your cellular provider. Step 2 - Researched the phone you would like to purchase or upgrade to. Step 3 - Selected the voice and unlimited data plan corresponding with BlackBerry usage at UH. You are now ready to place your order. **Note: Faculty and staff who frequently use their cell phone to conduct University business may be eligible to receive a wireless communication allowance if approved by their department head. See MAPP or your department administrator for more information. When using your BlackBerry device with UH Exchange service contact your business administrator for submission of an approved Online Work Request to IT Customer Services establishing BES account activation. GETTING STARTED Now that you have received the BlackBerry device you have to perform the initial setup before you can start receiving and sending s. BlackBerry users, who selected the BIS data plan and are only using mail.uh.edu, please see BIS initial setup heading only. BES data plan users please skip the heading below. BIS INITIAL SETUP The following screen shots along with step by step instructions are intended as a guide to setting up the mail.uh.edu account for users who selected the BIS data plan. You can also setup other accounts like Gmail by following the same steps listed below. To start, scroll to the icon that reads Set up Internet . If you don t see all the icons click the menu button, all the icons should appear.

3 Go to, Add An Account. This will connect to the cellular providers BIS account setup. In short you are setting up access rights for the cellular providers BIS server to log into your account, retrieve your s and push them to the BlackBerry device. Go to Accounts under Services. You might see the previous screen again. Select Add An Account.

4 Under the heading, Add An Account. You will be asked to input your address and password. Your address will be Click Next. As long as you completed the information above correctly you will have successfully configured your mail.uh.edu account. Please allow five to fifteen minutes for the s to start being delivered to your device.

5 You have two options in viewing your s. You can check all accounts and text messages under the Messages icon. If you only want to see your mail.uh.edu s then click on the icon that displays your mail.uh.edu address. Send a test message to your mail.uh.edu address.

6 You have successfully completed the initial setup and activation for your device. Please note most cellular providers also provide web setup to the BIS. You can setup the BIS accounts by visiting your cellular provider s website. Verizon Wireless AT&T\Cingular Sprint\Nextel T-Mobile BES INITIAL SETUP AND ACTIVATION This portion of the document describes how users can initiate wireless enterprise activation from their handhelds for exchange.uh.edu. ITCS will send a request to the exchange server administrator to add the user to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The server administrator will send an to the user with the enterprise activation password. Wireless enterprise activation enables a user to remotely activate a handheld on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server without a physical network connection. Users must ensure that they are in an area with sufficient wireless coverage when the wireless enterprise activation is attempted. The password applies to the user s BES account only. The password is invalid after five unsuccessful activation attempts, and if the user does not activate a handheld 48 hours after the password is created, the password expires and cannot be used. When the handheld is successfully activated, the password is removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. User initiates wireless enterprise activation: The user opens the enterprise activation program on the handheld and types the appropriate address e.g. userid@central.uh.edu and activation password received via .

7 Click Enter key or scroll button to see menu options to activate device. The handheld sends an activation request to the user s exchange account. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the handheld an activation response that contains routing information about the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the server s public keys. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the handheld establish a master encryption key. Both the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the handheld verify their knowledge of the master key to each other. If key confirmation succeeds, the activation proceeds and further communication is encrypted.

8 The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends appropriate service books (for example, messaging service book, wireless calendar service book, browser service book) to the handheld. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the following data to the user s handheld: calendar entries address book entries tasks memos messages This completes the BlackBerry initial setup and activation. You are now free to use your BlackBerry.
