Luke 24:49 RSV Lessn Gals & Objectives Gal The students will learn that the Hly Spirit is a Persn in fact the Third Persn f the Trinity by spending time in the Bible discvering Wh the Hly Spirit is, what the Hly Spirit is like, and what the Hly Spirit des. Objectives The students will take a whirl-wind tur thrugh the Bible in all the places which talk abut the Hly Spirit. The students will listen t Jesus talk abut the Hly Spirit and then discuss what they think abut what has been learned. Intrductin and Backgrund fr the Teacher We ften leave the Hly Spirit ut f ur teaching because we may view Him as a part f Gd that smehw came after Jesus r Wh is, at best, an unequal partner f the Trinity. Lessn # 4 specifically intrduced the Trinity including the Hly Spirit. This lessn seeks t enable the students t deepen and enlarge their appreciatin fr the fact that the Hly Spirit has existed frever as an equal member f the Hly Trinity. We can see much cncerning Wh the Hly Spirit is and what the Hly Spirit des simply by lking thrugh the Scripture. Therefre this lessn takes a whirlwind tur f the Scriptures. Yu will need t have dne this fr yurself ahead f time. The teaching in this sessin will have t be very clear. Tday the wrld is full f phrases abut Gd is in yu, r Gd is everywhere presenting the Hly Spirit almst as sme warm and fuzzy feeling. Nthing culd be further frm the Scriptures themselves. There is a generatin f Christians that thinks f the Hly Spirit as the frce f the Star Wars mvies (interestingly many f yur yung adults may nt have seen these mvies). Of curse this is nt true: the Hly Spirit is truly a Persn, and as a Persn the Hly Spirit has characteristics that all persns

2 have. Finally, ur invitatin t have a relatinship with Gd thrugh Jesus in the pwer f the Hly Spirit has very specific Biblical supprt and will be cvered in the next lessn. This lessn aims at helping the participants have right thinking abut the Third Persn f the Hly Trinity. Materials Needed fr Lessn Paper, pens, markers Chalkbard, flip chart, r white bard Religius picture fr each student Bk f Cmmn Prayer Opening Prayer (5 min.) Yu can start by praying extempraneusly, r use this prayer frm the Bk f Cmmn Prayer, page 227: O Gd, wh taught the hearts f yur faithful peple by sending them the light f yur Hly Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit t have a right judgment in all things, and evermre t rejice in his hly cmfrt; thrugh Jesus Christ yur Sn ur Lrd, wh lives and reigns with yu, in the unity f the Hly Spirit, ne Gd, fr ever and ever. AMEN. (The students may als add their wn prayers) Review (5min.) What des it mean t be a savir? Wh is ur savir? Why d we need t be saved? Intductry Activity (5-10 Min.) (These ideas are intended t ensure a lively and exciting atmsphere at the beginning f the lessn. It is fine fr each parish t apprach this differently if yu wish t make use f yur wn games r materials. Hwever, d make use f sme fun activity t get started). Chse ne r bth f these activities: The students will draw pictures f flames, a dve, and wind. When all the students have gathered, turn ut all the lights, let it get dark and let it get quiet (it will be hard fr them t sit there but give it a try) and read the pening line frm Genesis 1:1. Have ne student turn n the lights n cue.

3 Lessn (20-25 min.) 1) Assign ne f the Scriptures listed belw t each participant. There will be mre Scriptures than participants, s just g arund the grup again and keep assigning until all the Scriptures are assigned. 2) Starting with the first Scripture assigned, have the participants read each ne in turn. When all have been read members f the grup will call ut what the Spirit is ding; write their ideas n a chalk bard r flip chart. 3) When yu have gne thrugh all the Scriptures, lk at all the wrds and ask the students t reflect n what the Hly Spirit des Here are the Scriptures: Gen 1:1 HS is invlved in the prcess f creatin, bringing new things t life. Gen 2:7 The Old Testament wrd fr spirit is ruhach meaning breath r wind; s what did Gd d? Exdus 31:1-5 have yu ever experienced a sng/art that is mre than just art but which feels inspired? Gd can inspire the arts and music. Judges 6:14-15 & 34 Gd can make us effective even when we feel weak. Judges 15:14 HS can help us t break free f bnds: what things bind peple? Isaiah 61:1-3: The prphet is sent t preach gd news We can see thrugh these readings that the Hly Spirit is nt just a gd feeling. When the Hly Spirit gets invlved, things happen. In the Old Testament we see the Hly Spirit cming upn particular peple at a particular time fr a particular task. Spirit. 4) Read the Gspel f Jhn 15:26. Jesus describes the Hly What des Jesus call this Cunselr? Jesus calls him He, that is, a Persn. Frm Whm des this Cunselr cme? Frm the Father. What des this Cunselr d? He testifies t tells peple abut Jesus. Wh is the Hly Spirit like? He is the Spirit f Truth: Wh is The Truth? Jesus!

4 Reflectin (10-15 min.) The students will re-read Jhn 15:26 r Genesis 1:1 and reflect n Wh they think the Hly Spirit is. They will then write ut what they think abut Jesus. Wh is the Hly Spirit? What des the Hly Spirit d? Take-hme Activity (5 min.) (It is recmmended that yu make use f this take-hme activity t re-enfrce the learning experience. Yu may eliminate this exercise if necessary. Yu may als substitute anther activity if yu find that t be mre helpful. Yu shuld briefly review this lessn and review the take-hme activity at the beginning f the next learning sessin). The participants will take hme a religius picture (have cpies fr them ahead f time ff the internet) and ask them t think abut hw the Hly Spirit inspired the artist. Say a prayer every night befre yu g t bed that yu may be filled with the Hly Spirit. Clsing Prayer (5 min.)
