2 1. Background The South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) has identified a need for a Specialist Course in Mentorship as a fulfilment of the registration of a new category of registration viz Construction Mentor. The SACPCMP extended an invitation to Academic and Technology Universities who offer degree and diploma courses / programmes in the Built Environment to develop and present a specialist course in construction mentorship. The University of Pretoria was identified as preferred service provider to develop and present the course in mentorship. A meeting took place with the SACPCMP on 30 November 2012 to discuss the course. During the meeting it was agreed that a course content outline will be developed by the University of Pretoria. The course content will then be reviewed by the SACPCMP. The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the course content. Some preliminary input provided during the meeting was taken into account in the development of the course content. The proposed course content can be amended to address specific requirements of the SACPCMP. 2. Course duration and proposed dates It will be possible to cover the course contents within 4 weeks. We propose that the course can be completed in 4 block weeks presented a different dates in the year. 2

Cash flow planning, basic financial statements, financial reporting requirements and taxation. 1.4 Human Resource Management An overview of human resource management principles including a basic overview of labour law, employment contracts, employee administration, conflict management and employee skills development. 1.5 Business Administration Business administration requirements and processes in a typical construction company. 2 Business Plans 2.1 Business plan development Overview of the required content of a business plan. The process involved in the development of a business plan. Specialists to be consulted in the development of business plan. 2.2 Business plan management The utilisation of the business plan as management tool within an organisation. Continues improvement of the business plan to adapt to a changing environment. 3 Marketing Management 3.1 Strategic Marketing Assessment of the business environment and how to identify business opportunities. The development of a strategic marketing plan. 3.2 Public Relations Management An overview of public relationship management. The importance of public relationship management for a construction company. Stakeholder identification and management. 3.3 Social responsibility The importance of social responsibility programmes.
