Unit # Pacing weeks Unit Similarity, Trigonometry & Transformations Name Overview Unit 3 integrates the geometric concept of similarity and proportional reasoning, and extends related proofs to triangle proportionality and to the proportional segments created when multiple parallel lines are cut by multiple transversals. The concept of similarity becomes critical to the development of the geometric mean concept, and its very important role in right triangles, where an altitude has been drawn from the right angle to the hypotenuse, and subsequently to the proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. Similarity also is the cornerstone to understanding the trigonometric ratios of sine, cosine and tangent. Once these concepts are developed, this unit has a heavy emphasis on trigonometric modeling, using right triangle trigonometry, the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines. Applications extend in this unit to vectors, and in Unit to area, surface area, and volume. The unit concludes with an exploration of various transformations in the coordinate plane.
