1 PRAIRIE ISLE Newsletter Fall/Winter 2014 Well, THAT ended quickly! Hopefully this early departure from a nice fall season isn t the beginning of another very long and trying winter here. It is sad to look out my shop window as I write this and see mostly green fairways and know that underneath is rock solid frozen earth! I am able to at least still hear the sound of clubs hitting golf balls and those are coming from the indoor simulators that are giving plenty of golfers some relief from the everyday boredom of frigid weather. The only one I know that enjoys being outside in this weather is Oz and Speedy(one of our weekday diehards). And even Speedy hasn t been around lately. But, before you put those clubs away completely for the winter, take a look at the grips and access their status. This is a great time to regrip them after a full season and it gives me something to do. I ve watched all the ESPN 30 for 30 s that I can take!! Speaking of the simulators, now that Tiger has a new swing coach to work out all his kinks, if that inspires any of you to keep swing fit over the winter, I am available for lessons in the simulator. It s hard to come into a new golf season in March or April not having hit a golf ball in 5 months! Just me or call me at the shop during the week. I do have a few items still in the pro shop for sale, if any of you are thinking of early Xmas shopping. ProV s are now $39/dozen. NXT s $23/dozen. Velocity s $20/dozen and DT SoLo s $17/dozen. Oz sitting on frozen pond on 10 1 There are a few ladies apparel items for sale. Polkadot jackets, fleece wear and polo s all only $20!! I also have a couple of new items in for this fall and winter. One is a great travel golf bag from Club Glove. This is a really the best golf travel bag on the market. It can be logoed with your name and or the Prairie Isle logo. It comes in 16 different colors. Price is $289. Well worth the money if you do travel with your clubs. The other item is a Prairie Isle blanket. Great for the fall foot - ball games, the cart seat on those cold fall days or just to curl up under at home while watching the Hawks or Bulls. Only $58. Also, I definitely want to try and get a Prairie Isle Junior Team together for the PGA Junior League. It s a great league for kids between 8 and 13 years old. They get to play other teams in the area and get a fun taste of golf competition. I ve attached the flyer and website information for you parents who have kids that would be interested. 4 Don t Get Sacked by the Rules! Rule 28: Ball Unplayable: Definitions By Tim Sack As we stand on the tee, take aim and strike the ball 250 yards down the middle of the fairway, we always seem to find something that wasn't there before. These trees just keep popping up and I am going to get rid of my 60 degree wedge and put a chainsaw in my bag. Rule 28 deals with the options of the unplayable lie that we just encountered. The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under the penalty of ONE STROKE: A. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from witch the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or B. Drop a ball BEHIND the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball may be dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped; or C. Drop the ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole. If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under CLAUSE A, B, or C. If he elects to proceed under CLAUSE B or C, a ball must be dropped in the bunker. When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball. PENALTY FOR BREACH OF RULE: Match play Loss of hole; Stroke play Two stroke RULE 28/1 WHEN NECESSARY TO FIND and IDENTIFY BALL DEEMED UNPLAYABLE Q. A player hits his tee shot into a deep canyon. The player immediately deems the ball unplayable and plays another ball from the tee under the stroke anddistance option of Rule 28. May a player deem unplayable a ball which has not been found? A. Yes. A player may proceed under the stroke-anddistance option (Rule 28a) without finding his ball. However, since Rules 28b and 28c require reference to 4 where the ball lay, the player must find and identify his ball in order to proceed under either of these options. RULE 28/3 BALL DROPPED UNDER UNPLAYABLE BALL RULE COMES TO REST IN THE ORIGINAL POSITION or ANOTHER POSITION AT WHICH BALL IS UNPLAYABLE (Rule 28c) The ball WAS in play when it is first dropped RULE Thus, if the ball came to rest in the original position, the player must again invoke the unplayable ball rule, incurring an additional penalty stroke, unless he decides to play the ball as it lies. The same applies if the ball came to rest in another position at which is unplayable, assuming that the ball did not roll into a position covered by Rule 20-2c, in which case re-dropping without penalty would be required. HITTING A BALL FROM HAZARD TO HAZARD DEEMED UNPLAYABLE A player hits ball from a bunker into a water hazard and deems the ball unplayable under Rules 28b or 28c may keep the point between the bunker and the hole but not further back than the original ball position (the bunker). RULE 28/6.5 PLAYER DEENS BALL UNPLAYABE A SECOND TIME AND WISHES TO PROCEED UNDER STROKE AND DISTANCE AFTER DROPPING A BALL UNDER OTHER UNPLAYABLE OPTION Q. A player plays a stroke from Point A to Point B. The player deems his ball unplayable and proceeds under either RULE 28b or 28c. After dropping under penalty of one stroke, the ball comes to rest at Point C. The player deems his ball unplayable for a second time and wishes to proceed under Rule 28a, playing from Point A. Is this permissible? A. YES. The player may play from point A because he did not make a STROKE at the ball from either Point B or Point C. With Point A being the original point of contact thus incurring a total of two penalty strokes as well as distance loss going back to Point A.

5 2014 Match Play Results Congratulations to Randy Rodiek and Mark Siegwald for reaching the finals of the match play tournament. Randy defeated Ziggy 4 & 3 to earn his second match play championship...the first one being in 2009! A big thank you to everyone who participated and good luck next season! 5
