4 Economic and Social Research Council esrc.ac.uk The Leverhulme Trust leverhulme.ac.uk Research grants This scheme is designed to enable individuals or research teams to undertake anything from a standard research project through to a large-scale survey and other infrastructure or methodological development. There is considerable flexibility when it comes to subject area. As long as the suggested topic falls within ESRC s remit, any research area is eligible. Currently awards are available ranging from 200,000 to 2 million using Full Economic Costing. There are no closing dates so applications can be made at any time. The ESRC are introducing changes from 1 July 2015 when the lower threshold will rise to 350,000 and the upper threshold will drop to 1 million. Research seminars Seminar groups are multi-institutional groups of academic researchers, postgraduate students and non-academic users who meet regularly to exchange information and ideas with the aim of advancing research within their fields. Where appropriate, seminar group members should be drawn from the public sector, commercial private sector, third sector and other relevant organisations as well as from academic institutions, particularly those designed to bring together leading researchers from across disciplines to identify new research agendas or capacity building priorities. These grants do not use Full Economic Costing and are limited to 30,000 with the expectation that proposals will include at least three seminars a year and international collaboration. Deadline: January Future Research Leaders The Future Research Leaders scheme aims to enable outstanding early-career social scientists, in partnership with their host organisation, to acquire the skills set to become the future world leaders in their field. The call is open to high-quality candidates from anywhere in the world who have a maximum of four years and four months postdoctoral experience and the support of an eligible UK research organisation. Grants will be for a maximum of three years, with a pro-rata duration option for those employed part-time on a contract of 0.5 FTE or above. Awards are available for a maximum of 350,000 (at 100% Full Economic Cost). There are a limited amount of applications that we can submit so proposals will be subject to an internal peer review process. Deadline: January The Trust funds research in any area (except medical research). Be aware that they are particularly interested in research that is risky and each applicant needs to make a case as to why they have chosen this Trust. The Leverhulme Trust does not support research that is primarily policy driven, with an immediate commercial application, or the assembly of a data bank or base. The Trust does not use Full Economic Costing. Research project grants The aim of these awards is to provide financial support for innovative and original research projects. The grants are for up to five years but usually two to three years and provide support for the salaries of research staff engaged on the project, plus associated costs directly related to the proposed research. Successful bids reflect the personal vision of the applicant, demonstrate compelling competence in the research design, surmount traditional academic boundaries and involve a willingness to take appropriate degrees of risk in setting research objectives. Value: up to 500,000, 75% of the resource must be for research staff costs for those working directly on the project, 25% of the budget can be for associated research costs including travel and subsistence, conference attendance, consumables and technical or computing costs and services. Programme Grants with specific topics are also available for longer periods of time and a larger budget. Online applications can be submitted at any time. If the preliminary online application is successful, the deadlines for the detailed applications are September, December and March. International Academic Fellowships This scheme provides established researchers with a concentrated period in research centres outside the UK from three to 12 months, in order that they can develop new knowledge, skills and ideas. Funds are available for up to 30,000 to include reasonable replacement cover whilst the Fellow is overseas; travel to and within the overseas country or countries; a maintenance grant to meet the increased expense of living overseas; and essential research costs. Deadline: anticipated to be November Research Fellowships Research Fellowships of three to 24 months are open to experienced researchers, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties from completing a programme of original research. The awards provide research expenses of up to 50,000 over and above normal living costs and/or provide a contribution towards reasonable replacement costs or loss of earnings. Deadline: anticipated to be November
5 The Leverhulme Trust... continued The British Academy britac.ac.uk International networks These collaborations enable a Principal Investigator based in the UK to lead a research project for up to three years where its successful completion is dependent on the participation of relevant overseas institutions. The proposed project must include at least one UK University and two or more overseas Institutions (up to seven in total). The networks should be newly constituted. Funds are awarded for up to 125,000 for international travel and subsistence, the organising and running of local seminars or workshops and the salary of a Network Facilitator. Deadline: open deadline for online applications - three per year for detailed applications in September, December and March. Early Career Fellowships Early Career Fellowships aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers but with a proven record of research. The fellowships last for 36 months and it is anticipated that they will lead to a more permanent academic position. Up to 50% of each Fellow s total salary costs up to a maximum of 24,000 per annum is available. The balance is to be paid by the host institution. The Fellow may request research expenses up to 6,000. Deadline: March Visiting professorships To enable distinguished overseas academics to spend between three to 12 months inclusive at a UK university, primarily in order to enhance the skills of the academic staff or the student body within the host institution and further their own academic interests. The criteria for selection are first the academic standing and achievements of the visitor in terms of research and teaching, and secondly the ability of the receiving institution to benefit from the imported skills and expertise. Priority will be given to new or recent collaborative ventures. The funds requested should reflect the individual circumstances of the visitor and the nature and duration of the proposed activities including a maintenance grant, economy travel to and from the UK and associated costs, such as travel within the UK, consumables, and essential technical assistance. Deadline: May The British Academy supports research in the areas of humanities and social sciences. However, practice-based outputs, such as in musical composition and performance, visual practice, creative writing, and film-making, can only be considered when they form part of an integrated project of critical or historical significance. See individual schemes for details on whether Full Economic Costing is supported. BA/Leverhulme Trust small research grants Funds are available to facilitate initial project planning and development; to support the direct costs of research; and to enable the advancement of research through workshops or conferences, or visits by or to partner scholars. All applications should demonstrate that funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the project. This scheme does not use Full Economic Costing. Value: ,000. Only direct research costs are eligible. (Does not include academic salary time, overheads, direct production costs, replacement teaching). Duration: up to 24 months. Deadline: usually two to three per year, first deadline is May Mid-career fellowships The Academy intends to support outstanding individual researchers with excellent research proposals, and to promote public understanding and engagement with humanities and social sciences. The purpose of these awards is to allow successful applicants to obtain time freed from their normal teaching and administrative commitments. The time bought by the scheme should be devoted to the completion of a major piece of research, and the Academy will also look for evidence of a clear commitment to a strategy of public engagement and communication of the results of the research during the period of the Fellowship. Applicants are invited to indicate ways in which their proposed programme will contribute to advances in understanding, including public understanding, in their subject area and to the identification of appropriate strategic priorities in the social sciences and humanities. The Fellowships are tenable for a period of not less than 6 months and not more than 12 months. These Fellowships are covered under Full Economic Costing, but the Academy s contribution to the salary of the Mid-Career Fellow will be capped at an upper limit of 80,000. It is not expected that the total value of an award will exceed 160,000 (BA contribution to Full Economic Costing). Awards can be held over a minimum of six months and a maximum of 12 months. Deadline: anticipated to be late summer Postdoctoral fellowships These Fellowships are for outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their experience of research and teaching in a university environment, which will develop 6 7
6 The British Academy... continued Social Policy Association social-policy.org.uk their curriculum vitae and improve their prospects of obtaining permanent lecturing posts by the end of the Fellowship. The primary emphasis is on completion of a significant piece of publishable research, which will be assisted by full membership of an academic community of established scholars working in similar fields. Early career researchers are defined as being within a three year period from the formal award of their doctorate. Eligible applicants will be expected to have some association with the UK academic community, and to be at an early career stage. Value: 80% of salary costs, directly allocated and indirect costs, and up to 6,000 over three years in research expenses may be claimed. Full Economic Costing is supported by this scheme. Duration: three years. Deadline: anticipated to be autumn 2015 with a 2 stage process. International partnership and mobility awards Funding is available to support the development of research partnerships between UK scholars and scholars in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, South Asia, East and South-East Asia. Awards cover any branch of the humanities or social sciences and are intended to focus on collaborative research on a specific theme of mutual interest, rather than purely on establishing networks. Partnerships can include a range of related activities, and mobility (in the form of visits in both directions, exchanges, etc). The scheme is intended to initiate the development of long-term links between UK and overseas scholars. Value: up to 10,000 for 1 year projects; up to 30,000 for 3 year projects. Duration: up to one year; or three years. Deadline: anticipated to be February Skills acquisition awards Funding is available to support the career development of early career scholars (within Ten years of the award of the doctorate) who are in established academic posts. These awards aim to develop and enhance their quantitative skills by providing an award to enable early career researchers to spend some time with a mentor at a specialist centre in the field specialising in quantitative methods. Costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence can be applied for, together with a contribution to the cost of teaching relief for the applicant, and the time of the mentor. Value: maximum award is up to 10,000 over 12 months, the average value of award is expected to be significantly lower. Duration: up to 12 months. Deadline: anticipated to be October This scheme is designed to help fund seminars and workshops dealing with research and/or learning and which will benefit the UK social policy community, or involve dissemination of knowledge about UK social policy internationally, or work on international issues that would be of interest to UK social policy academics and practitioners. The focus should be on activities that will benefit a group or network rather than individuals. Value: up to 500. Deadlines: 18 September Most UK Funders have mailing lists you can join to keep up to date with their developments and opportunities 8 9

9 Chartered Institute of Management Accountants cimaglobal.com Centre for Economic Policy Research cepr.org Research funding Each year CIMA runs two major research initiatives on specified topics, which they feel are of value to their members. The Institute is interested in research in the following areas: applied ethics; CSR; leadership; the future of management accounting; valuing talent; contemporary performance management; strategy, risk and opportunity management; resilient business models and big data. The Institute does not use Full Economic Costing. Value: usually 5,000-40,000 (seedcorn grants for early career researchers and feasibility studies of up to 5,000 are also available). Deadline: yet to be announced. Our website has a wealth of information, Visit us at anglia.ac.uk/ researchservices. Contact RCDS as soon as you are thinking of submitting a bid Private Enterprise Development in Low- Income Countries (PEDL) is a joint research initiative of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the Department for International Development (DFID). It aims to develop a research programme focussing on private-sector development in low-income countries and is motivated by the need to better understand what determines the strength of market forces driving efficiency in low-income countries. PEDL will give particular encouragement to proposals which address three cross-cutting issues: Fragile and conflict affected states: The importance of the interaction between growth and conflict provides a very compelling case for supporting research in this area. A critical bottleneck to research on firms in conflict-ridden areas is the availability of data. But if researchers are able to overcome this issue, there is tremendous potential for research on private enterprise development in conflict-ridden states. Gender: For proposals for research on issues that operate at the level of the enterprise, PEDL will encourage proposals which take into account differences in gender. Climate, environment and social compliance: Environmental and social compliance may have implications for productivity and growth dynamics in LICs. In the first instance, it may increase production costs, making firms less competitive, but may encourage firms to focus more carefully on productivity improvement. This interaction is an example of how we will encourage research which incorporates environmental and social compliance. You can apply for a major research grant or a smaller, exploratory research grant. Major research grant Applications should produce credible research results that will be relevant for policy-making and promote research related to private enterprises of all sizes. Grants will fund research assistance, data collection and new surveys in low-income countries, and teaching buyouts for the principal investigator. Value: 100,000 to an average size of 300,000. Duration not stated. Deadline: anticipated to be in March. Exploratory research grant These grants are designed to allow researchers to explore new approaches to the study of firms in low-income-countries (LICs) and to develop new or build on existing sources of data on firms in LICs. Value: 10,000-35,000. Duration: 1 year. Deadline: open
