1 FACULTY OF HISTORY Job title Departmental Lecturer in American History Division Department Location Grade and salary Hours Contract type Humanities Faculty of History Oxford Grade 7 point 1: 30,738 per year Full time (37.5 hours per week) Fixed term for one year Start date 1 October 2016 Reporting to Chair of the History Faculty Board Vacancy reference Job description Applications are invited for a one-year, fixed-term Departmental Lecturership in American History , tenable from 1 October The appointment is to fulfil teaching needs between the departure of one permanent member of staff and the appointment of a successor; the appointment is non-renewable. The successful applicant will have an excellent research profile, and teaching interests in any area of American History of that period. While there is no preference for any particular research focus, the successful candidate will be required to demonstrate an ability and willingness to teach across a range of papers in American History. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. Overview of the role The appointee will be required to provide lectures and tutorial teaching for the second-year course The History of the USA ; and to organize the classes, give tutorials and supervise the extended essays for the third-year undergraduates Special Subject Slavery and
2 the Crisis of the Union The appointee will also contribute, as appropriate, to the teaching of the undergraduate paper The History of the USA since The appointee will also supervise and mark undergraduate dissertations, will take a reasonable share of University examining at undergraduate and taught graduate level, and will supervise students taking the MSt course in US History whose research falls within the area of the appointee. Further course information can be found via: In total, the Lecturer will provide up to six hours per week of tutorial teaching or supervision, and will provide 36 hours of classes and lectures at the undergraduate and postgraduate level in each academic year. The Lecturer may be asked to contribute teaching on other papers according to her/his expertise and available teaching and tutorial time. Full participation in the annual Admissions process for undergraduate and graduate students is also expected along with contributions to access initiatives such as Open Days. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the wider research culture of the Faculty through attendance at, and contributing to, research seminars and other events. The post does not carry a College affiliation, but the appointee will be provided with an office in the Rothermere American Institute (RAI). Key Duties and Responsibilities The Lecturer will be required to: Provide tutorial teaching (as detailed above) and at least 36 hours of lectures or classes in each academic year; Engage in undergraduate and graduate supervision, assessment and university examining as required; Undertake advanced academic study and research in American history to underpin lectures and class teaching, and to participate in the Faculty s research-related activities; Play a full part in admissions processes; Undertake pastoral and administrative responsibilities for the Faculty. These key duties will include responsibility to: Produce lecture hand-outs, course materials, and reading lists; Be the first contact for student matters relating to attendance, conduct, coursework, performance, and welfare (referring matters to appropriate others); Gather and analyse feedback from students, colleagues, and examiners, and modify course design, content, or delivery as appropriate; Write research articles for peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and reviews, and to disseminate research findings at conferences; Liaise with examiners and academic staff regarding teaching arrangements and student performance, and with funding bodies, stakeholders, and researchers in related fields to share information and expertise.
3 Selection criteria 1. A completed doctorate in a relevant field, or evidence that a doctorate is imminent. 2. A strong record of existing or forthcoming publications, as well as a clear profile of the research they would undertake during the period of appointment. 3. A record of successful teaching within the field of appointment, including prior experience of teaching at undergraduate level. The selection committee accepts that the successful candidate may have little or no experience with small group tutorial teaching. In the case of those with limited experience of teaching, participation in teaching and learning seminars or some other form of relevant training may be an advantage. 4. An ability to lecture at an appropriate level in an interesting and engaging manner. 5. An ability to carry out lecturing or class teaching to graduate students within the field of the appointment. 6. For more information please visit The History Faculty The Faculty of History in Oxford is the largest in the United Kingdom, and one of the largest in the world. It has a very strong international reputation for its scholarship and its teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, with particular strengths in the history of the British Isles,
4 continental Europe, imperial and global history, the United States, economic and social history, intellectual history, and the history of science, medicine, and technology. Within the Faculty there is also a department for the History of Art, and a Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine. Research in the Faculty is focused around, and facilitated by, ten formal research centres and twenty informal research clusters. Research centres provide focal points for major individual and collaborative research projects, and for the organisation of conferences and workshops, and can call upon administrative support from within the Faculty. These centres include the Modern European History Research Centre (see which organises events, co-ordinates international networks of scholars and regularly secures external funding to support its activities; and the recently-formed Oxford Centre for Global History which provides a further impetus to emerging and converging interests in extra-european and transnational history. Research clusters support weekly or fortnightly seminars, which have provided the contexts and stimulus for the preparation and writing of many publications by Faculty members. In addition to Faculty postholders, there are large numbers of other scholars involved in historical research and teaching in Oxford s colleges, museums and libraries. The appointee will be assigned a mentor, who will be a senior member of the Faculty; she or he will be eligible to apply to the Faculty s Research Committee for up to 400 per year of research funding; and she or he will receive assistance in the preparation and submission of grant and fellowship applications through the Faculty Research Director and Research Development Officer.
