GALLERY DISPLAY RULES (effective July 2016) Because space is limited in the DAC Gallery, the following guidelines apply when submitting wk f REGULAR gallery exhibitions. From time to time, the Gallery Codinating Committee may opt to have other types of exhibitions: themed shows, competitions, invitational exhibits, curated exhibits, etc. F these exhibitions, the submission rules may be different. Artwk that is submitted f a REGULAR exhibition is still subject to review by the Gallery Codinating Committee, whose members will have the final say in what is best f the overall look of the exhibition. GALLERY DISPLAY CATEGORIES: There are 3 maj categies: 2-Dimensional Wk, 3- D Wk, and Fine Craft. Each of these has numbered subcategies. Members must be juried in separately f each subcategy. 2-DIMENSIONAL WORK: Artwk in this categy is displayed on a wall D Artwk (Acrylic, Oil, Watercol, Pastel, Drawing, Printmaking, Mixed Media, etc.) 2. Photography 3. Other (specify) 3-D WORK: Artwk in this categy is displayed on tabletops, sculpture stands, shelves, walls. 1. Sculpture 2. Assemblage 3. 3-D Mosaics 4. Gourds 5. Other (specify) FINE CRAFT: Artwk in this categy is displayed in windows, jewelry cases, shelves, garment racks, walls. 1. Jewelry 2. Glass 3. Fiber Arts 4. Ceramics 5. Other (specify) Only Gallery members who have been juried in are permitted to show artwk in the REGULAR gallery exhibitions. The amount of artwk that can be displayed in each of the 3 general categies takes into account the layout of the current gallery that is housed in an histic building. This designation as an histic building limits how wk can be displayed and how the physical space can be altered. Our Art Center has been enriched with many artists' wks but SPACE IS LIMITED; therefe the following artwk sizes and quantities must be adhered to:
DESCRIPTION & LIMITS: There is a 50 lb. weight limit f all wall wk. 2-Dimensional Artwk Dimensions include the frame 4 Pieces up to 12 (longest dimension) 3 Pieces up to 24 (longest dimension) 2 Pieces up to 32 (longest dimension) 1 Piece up to 72 (longest dimension) 3-Dimensional Artwk 6-8 pieces up to 6 (greatest dimension) 4 pieces up to 12 (greatest dimension) 3 pieces up 24 (greatest dimension) 1-2 pieces if over 24 (greatest dimension) Fine Craft Numbers of pieces are limited to the following unless the artist is requested to bring in me pieces at the time of Gallery installation. In the event that the medium is not listed here, the Gallery Codinat will wk with the artist and the DAC Board to establish an equitable number of pieces per show. Jewelry: Up to 25 pieces. A set (earrings and necklace f example) counts as one piece. Ceramics: Up to 12 pieces, depending on size Fused glass: Up to 15 pieces, depending on size Fiber Arts: 1-10 pieces, depending on size Stained Glass: 4 pieces up to 24" x 26" (approval required f anything larger) Stained glass naments: Up to 25 pieces Gourds: Up to 8 pieces, depending on size
All regular gallery members have the option of displaying artwk in the bins and in the art card area. These areas are subject to their own display rules. ART CARDS BINS Each member is limited to 25 cards and will be responsible f replacing those that have been sold. Artists are responsible f keeping their art cards in a neat and proper der in the racks provided. It is recommended that cards be priced at a minimum of $4 each be packaged with a price not less than $5 per package. ALL PIECES MUST: 1. Be no larger than 24 in height and 20 wide. (Hizontal in these dimensions is OK so long as it fits this guideline). This is so they fit in the bin and do not cover up the name of the artist other artists. 2. Be flat: unframed prints, Gicleés, photo prints and photos, unframed sketches, small unframed iginal watercols. All pieces must be matted mounted on foam ce something similar. 3. Be neatly wrapped in clear wrap (not the home type of cellophane). 4. Not exceed a maximum of ten (10) flat pieces in a bin at any one time OR maximum three (3) pieces of Gicleés oils on maximum ½ stretcher bars. 5. Be kept in alphabetical der by artist s last name. (Occasionally we will rotate so everyone has a chance to be in the front of the bin). Please do not rearrange the bin headers. 6. Artists are responsible f keeping the bins neat and clean. DAC reserves the right to refuse any art piece that does not follow these guidelines. These rules will allow f a fairer use of gallery space and f a smoother gallery operation. Your cooperation is appreciated. Any questions on these rules need to be addressed to
the Gallery Codinat, who with the Board s suppt has the responsibility to interpret and enfce these rules. GALLERY DISPLAY RULES 1. All artwk must be iginal - copies of other artists, etc, are unacceptable. Art that is a printed reproduction of an artwk iginally done in another medium is not acceptable except in the bins. 2. All wall pieces must be dry and ready f hanging with wire. Hooks, clasps, metal teeth brackets are not acceptable. 3. Unframed wk must be done on Gallery canvas no less than 1 1/2 deep and edges must be painted. 4. Due to weight considerations, framed wall pieces with GLASS will be accepted up to a glass size of 16 x 20 only ( 320 square inches of glass). Plexiglas is preferred. 5. All art pieces must be free of dirt, paint and marks etc. and must fit properly inside the frame. Frames must be clean, and free of scratches, chips dents. All art must be in excellent condition and will be rejected if it doesn't meet these criteria. 6. Artists must be juried in on each subcategy befe wk in that subcategy can be shown in the gallery. Those wishing to show art in me than one of their accepted media in one show may do so as long as the total number of artwks does not exceed the space limitations. Any questions should be directed to the gallery hanging committee. 7. Those artists wishing to exhibit art in two subcategies in the same show must pay an additional $40/year gallery membership and expect to host (sit) the gallery two times per month. Alternatively, artists may opt to show wk from one of their accepted (juried) subcategy in different shows. In this case, they would need to pay only $40/year and be obligated to host (sit) only once a month. 8. Upon purchase of a piece of art, the gallery sitters must notify the artist and the artist may bring in a piece of similar size f replacement. Only gallery co-codinats & their designate will replace the art piece with the new artwk, alter/move any artwk in the gallery. 9. An artist must not remove their artwk from the gallery during any DAC exhibition. The exception would be that the art is to be displayed under the name of the Desert Art Center and is listed with DAC control numbers, prices, titles and artists' names, and the 30% commission is paid to the DAC f any sales. The Gallery Codinats must give Approval befe the wks are removed. 10. Instructs who are not Gallery Members are entitled to hang one piece of art in each show. 11. Art will not be displayed in a show if brought in after the scheduled intake, unless previously approved by the Gallery Codinat. 12. Pricing limit on each individual piece of artwk is $3000 per artist per show. 13. Artists should carry their own insurance on art that is displayed at DAC. DAC is not responsible f loss damage to artwk.
14. Any artwk can only be shown once per season (October through May). Exceptions are fine crafts such as glass and jewelry, which may remain through shows. Any other exceptions are at the discretion of the Gallery Codinat. 15. Any artwk not removed from the gallery at the end of a show and remaining at the Desert Art Center f longer than 30 days, is subject to ffeit to be sold disposed of by the Desert Art Center as they see fit. 16. Board of Directs, who have wk currently on display in the Gallery, are exempt from the requirement noted in the DAC By-Laws, but have the option to Sit the Gallery. JURY Process 1. A Jury of 3 people (including one qualified jur from outside of the DAC,) appointed annually by the Board President, will be designated to jury prospective Gallery members. 2. Jurying of prospective Gallery Members will take place once a year unless the Board decides that an additional date in the year is warranted. 3. Artists who wish to be considered f Gallery Membership must first be Regular DAC members. 4. Regular DAC members who wish to be considered f Gallery Membership should submit digital images, a bio, and an artist statement on-line to the DAC Membership chair. Within the application f Gallery Membership, prospective members will be able to designate a medium categy categies that they would prefer to be juried into the gallery in. 5. The Membership chair, in codination with the DAC Board will set the schedule f jurying of prospective Gallery members. In der to allow enough time f jurs to adequately evaluate artwk, it is recommended that the jury process commence 6 weeks pri to the installation of a new exhibition and conclude 2 weeks pri to the new show. 6. If they choose, jurs may request that prospective members bring actual artwk into the DAC after the initial on-line screening period. All art submitted f jurying will be taken to the small studio and left there f the jury. 7. Current Gallery Members who wish to exhibit wk in a subcategy other than that which they were iginally juried in f will need to submit digital images f the jury process. 8. Jurs will not see have any contact with the prospective members during the jury process. Gallery hosts will not have any contact with new member artists unless designated by the Membership Chair. 9. An and/ letter will be sent to prospective Gallery member artists to advise them of their acceptance status. 10. The Membership Chair is designated to codinate the new artists with paperwk and procedure pri to the new show. 11. New Artists accepted by the jury are subject to a waiting list in the event that the gallery is full based on art submitted by existing members. Their wk will be displayed at the earliest possible opptunity.
