2 1.0 Regulations for the structure of the Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Art (B.I.F.A.) Degree Course. 1.1 Introduction Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts shall strive to provide a full-time Fine art and Industrial design programme that develops cultural, historical and industrial understanding of the arts/design as well as creative and performing ability of its students. The B.I.F.A. Degree requires at least three years of two semesters each taken within a given period, in residence. Realizing this, the School has made arts and design sensitivity to all aspects of visual experience central to the programme. The task of the artist, designer, and art historian is to celebrate visual experience through a variety of media, technology and styles. Objectives Art and design as a human activity does involve aesthetic, intellectual, and practical skills, although to become broadly significant it should interact with the content available in other fields, especially science, cooperative education and industrial studies in Studio Art/Industrial/Museum and Gallery. Study trips, and Art History provide on-the-job, supervised, evaluated experiences which contribute to the student s overall education and development. Primary goals include improvement of art, museum, gallery skills, production and creative strategies. Specific careers exist in the general areas of Fine art and industrial design. Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts graduates have established careers in such fields as studio practices Art and design, teaching in schools and colleges, anthropology, antique restoration, film and video producers, gallery and museum curators, illustrators, Media, Advertising etc. The future holds a great deal of promise for artists and designers who can combine skills with a breadth of understanding. There following shall be principal areas of study: Painting, Art History, Sculpture, Drawing, Ceramics, Jewellery Making, Printing, Graphic Design, Textiles, Photography, Illustration, Industrial Design and Fashion. The courses shall be pursued in the following departments: (i) Department of Painting and Art History. (ii) Department of Sculpture and Drawing (iii) Department of Industrial Arts and Design. 1.2 General The common regulations and guidelines for Bachelor degrees in Makerere University and the specific regulations of the Margaret Trowell school of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA) shall apply to the studies and examination of Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts (B.I.F.A) 1.3 Admission to BIFA Degree Programmes Direct Entry For admission to BIFA under the Direct Entry Scheme, a candidate must have: (i) Sat the Uganda Certificate of Examinations or equivalent and obtained a certificate. (ii) Two advanced level passes at the same sitting of the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Examination, one of which must be in either art or technical drawing. Applicants seeking admission to the MTSIFA would in addition have taken basic computer knowledge. Weighting: For admissions, the A level subject shall be weighted as follows: Group Category Subject Weight 1 Essential Art or Technical Drawing 3 2 Relevant One or two best done of all A level subjects Desirable General Paper, Sub-Maths 1 4 Others All the remaining Subjects (Arts & Science) 0.5
3 1.3.2 Mature Age Entry For admission to BIFA Degree course under the mature age scheme, a candidate should posses specialized knowledge relevant to Industrial and Fine Arts to ensure successful completion of the course upon selection on passing the Mature Age Entry Examinations Diploma Holders For admission to BIFA Degree Course a candidate should possess a Diploma from a recognized institution (after obtaining an advanced level certificate) with at least Class II Diploma with Art and or Technical drawing as a basis. Credits will be transferred as appropriate. 1.4 Programme Duration The BIFA programme shall normally take a minimum period of three years. Each shall consist of two semesters of 17 weeks, 15 of teaching and two for examination. There shall be two recess terms in second and third year for industrial to training. Students shall pursue taught/guided courses in the three years and a research report shall be submitted in the third year first semester. Project attachment training will take place throughout year three. 1.5 Types of Courses Courses in the programme shall be classified as follows: (a) Core Course A Core Course shall be a Course which is essential to an Academic Programme and gives the Academic Programme its unique features. Everyone offering that particular Academic Programme must pass that Course. (b) Elective Course An Elective Course shall be a Course offered in order to broaden an Academic Programme or to allow for specialization. It is chosen from a given group of Courses largely at the convenience of the student. Another Elective Course may be substituted for a failed Elective Course. (c) Audited Course An Audited Course shall be a Course offered by a student for which a Credit/Credit Unit shall not be awarded. (d) Prerequisite Course A Pre-requisite is a condition (either Course or Classification), which has to be satisfied prior to enrolling for the Course in question. A Pre-requisite Course, therefore, shall be a Course offered in preparation for a higher level Course in the same area of study. Course Credits A Credit Unit is granted for a series of fifteen contact hours or one contact hour per week per semester. a contact hour is calculated as being equivalent to:- One lecture hour Two studio/practical hours Four industrial/field training hours- regulation to cater for BIFA. No course shall carry less than one credit unit.
4 2.0 Structure of the Programme The programme shall consist of full time study of lectures, practical/studio and industrial training/placement under the structure below: Year I, lectures, practical/studio Year II, lectures, practical/studio and industrial training/placement Year III, lectures, practical/studio and industrial training/placement. In the third year, Semester II in addition to the examination students will mount an exhibition of selected years work and submit a supervised research project report. The structure of the combination of electives (areas of specializations of the BIFA programme) is based on 3:3:3 combination of art and design load and professional load component. Minimum Credit Units for graduation: i) course load is 130 Art Area Component Students are required to take at least one course from fine art and industrial electives. A student chooses subjects from first year and carries them through second and third years. Students may choose to take Double Mains in areas where allowed. (a) Professional Area Component To complete the BIFA programme, a student shall take and pass all the core (professional) courses. The school of Industrial and Fine arts shall use the credit hours system in determining courses value toward degree requirements. Under this system, a course which meets one hour each week for one semester is worth one credit hour (or one semester hour of credit) toward graduation. A practical (studio) course which meets two hours each week for one semester is also worth one credit hour. A student shall offer core courses and elective courses to make credit units a semester. 3.0 Examination regulations 3.1 There shall be a Board of Examiners which shall comprise an external Examiner(s) and Internal Examiners appointed by Senate, at the recommendations of the Board of Studies of the School of Industrial and Fine Arts. The Board of Examiners shall receive, consider and recommend to the Board of Studies, the final examination results of each candidate. 3.2 The Board of Examiners shall be chaired by the Dean of the School of Industrial and Fine Arts, who is also the Chairperson of the Board of Studies. All decisions of the Board of Examiners shall be subject to ratification by the Board of Studies. 3.3 The Board of Studies shall recommend to the Senate what mark shall finally be awarded to each candidate in each course and the final result of the examination. 3.4 The examinations for the Degree of BIFA comprise of core and elective courses. Major work, exhibition, research paper are examined in 3 rd year only. 3.5 Industrial Training shall be supervised by staff from the Faculty together with on-site trainers. Students shall submit a report at the end of the training. It shall last a minimum of four weeks.
5 (e) A Course Requiring a Pre-requisite When a student fails a Pre-requisite Course, he/she shall not be allowed to take the higher level Course requiring a Pre-requisite. A student will be required to retake the failed Pre-requisite Course before embarking on a higher-level Course requiring a Pre-requisite. (f) Major Presentation A major project presentation shall be a set of researched and supervised projects or one project in an area/field of specialization in which each student is expected to exhibit their understanding of content, application, techniques/methods in considerable depth. (g) Minor A minor shall be a set of Courses in a Field/Area that is of lesser importance than the Major. A minor shall constitute not more than a third of the Programme Load. 4.0 Course Evaluation The performance in each course for the award of a degree shall be evaluated through: a) Course work project/assignments, presentations, critiques, project design, industrial training and evaluation performed through out the semesters. b) Written/practical examinations shall be taken at the end of each semester. 4.1 Assessment and Grading Each course shall be assessed on the basis of 100 total marks allocated as follows: a) Course work (progressive/continuous Assessment shall contribute 40% of the total marks. b) Final examinations 60% c) Students shall be required to sit for an examination in each of courses offered during each semester. Each examined course shall be graded out of a maximum of one hundred (100) marks and assigned appropriate letter grades and grade point as follows: Grading of marks Marks(% Letter Grade Grade Point A B B B C C C D D D- 0.5 Below 35 E 0.0 These additional letters shall be used where appropriate: W - Withdraw from course I - Incomplete Aud - Audited Courses only c) The minimum pass mark in any course shall be 50% or GPA of 2.0 d) No credit shall be awarded for any course in which a student fails. 4.2 Retaking a Course A student may retake any course when it is next offered again in order to: a) Pass it if he/she had failed it before or b) Improve the grade if the first pass grade(s) were low. c) While retaking a course,
6 i) A student shall attend the prescribed lectures, tutorials, Clinicals/Practicals/Field work in the course or Courses ii) the student shall retake both the coursework and the examinations. iii) Whenever a course has been retaken, the academic transcript shall indicate so accordingly d) A student shall not be allowed to accumulate more than 5 retakes e) When a student has retaken a course the better of the Grades shall be used in the computation of CGPA. f) A student shall not retake a course after his/her results has been classified and has qualified for the award of a degree/diploma/certificate 4.4 Progression Progression of a student shall be classified as Normal, probationary or discontinuation Normal Progress Normal progress shall occur when a student has passed the assessments in not only the specified core courses but all the courses registered for, in a given semester Probationary progress (PP) A student shall be placed on probation when a student obtains CGPA of less than 2.0.Such a student shall be allowed to progress to next semester/academic year but shall still sit for that course later on and obtain at least the Pass Mark (50%) in the Course(s) Discontinuation (Disco) A student shall be discontinued from the program if one of the following conditions obtain: a) A student has failed to obtain at least the pass mark (50%) during the third assessment in the same course or courses he/she has retaken. b) A student accumulated three consecutive probations based on the CGPA c) A student who has overstayed in an Academic Program by more than Two years. 4.5 Failure of prerequisite When a student fails a pre-requisite course, he/she shall not be allowed to take a higher level course requiring a pre-requisite. A student shall be required to to retake the failed pre-requisite course before embarking on the higher level course requiring a pre-requisite. 4.6 Withdrawal From a Programme/Course(S) The concept of a dead semester is irrelevant in the Semester/Credit unit system. However, a registered student may apply to his/her respective Board for permission to withdraw from a programme/course (s) any time of the semester. A student will be allowed only a maximum of two withdrawals in an academic programme and each withdrawal shall be a maximum of one academic year only. 4.7 Weighting Classification a) There shall be no weighting of years, since there would be enough courses in all the years of study. b) The cumulative grade point average for the various classes shall be indicated as follows: Class CGPA First Class Second Class-Upper Division Second Class-Lower Division Pass Award Upon the successful completion of the program of study in the offered courses, the senate shall award the degree of Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts (BIFA) of Makerere University with classification indicated above.
