1 e.newsletter promoting area visual arts and artists since 1895 Summer 2014 A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT We Sell Art!!! Becky Olsen 1011 RIVERMONT AVENUE LYNCHBURG,VIRGINIA CONTACT US: ON THE WEB: Join us on Facebook! Dear Members, The Lynchburg Art Club is comfortably back in the financial black! Warmest thanks to Gail Harris and Gay Tucker. The Painted Lunch Boxes were a very effective fund raiser for our club. I know that many members painted wonderful and clever lunch boxes for this event so thank you, thank you, thank you. Our fund raiser for the roof was very successful, and it has been repaired. We could use some more money, however, if you have any, to repair the porch floor and the lift. We have had an inquiry about working with handicapped individuals, both adults and children, so now we need to be able to get them in the building. And then ultimately up to the studios. It is like my mailbox, if I didn t get requests for money, I wouldn t get any mail at all. Our Annual Meeting has been rescheduled for June 22 at 2 o clock. The program will include election of officers and an update on various projects roof, floor, lift and lunch boxes. A question and answer session is planned about how to be a successful LAC volunteer which includes where things are kept, how to complete the paper work involved in volunteering, the recipe for the Friday night punch, lots of answers to make the volunteer s life easier. We hope this will be interesting to the Sustaining Members, as well as the Operating Members, as we are going to be needing more help from everyone. The Art Club will participate in First Friday on July 4th. The trolley will be running, the other art venues in Lynchburg will be open. We have a wonderful show scheduled with works by Penny Millson-Martula and Myrna Nein. The previously scheduled juried show will be held in August. I wave a fond farewell to Joey Tichacek and Rachael Mahan of the Hospitality Committee and Nancy Wood of the Publicity Committee. These members have cheerfully done a wonderful job for the Lynchburg Art Club. Many thanks! As required in the By-Laws, the Nominating Committee will be presenting nominees for all the offices: President, Vice-President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary and Financial Officer. They will also need to nominate six Members at Large. Some of these jobs are time consuming and challenging, some are fun and not so difficult. Please consider saying yes when a committee member calls you. A special bonus is that the Board voted to allow the president (and immediate past president!!!) to attend any class the Art Club offered for free. Now that is a deal! Thanks to every member of the Lynchburg Art Club who has been so very helpful and considerate to me during my time as Co-President. The opportunity to serve the Club has been a delightful experience. I have made many wonderful new friends. I quote a wise man I know (my husband) Organizations do not fail because of lack of money; it is lack of people willing to work. Thanks again to all, Becky Olsen

2 IT S THAT TIME AGAIN... TIME TO RENEW YOUR LAC MEMBERSHIP! Consider these advantages to Lynchburg Art Club membership: LAC is housed in a historic building on Rivermont Avenue that is owned and operated by artists. LAC is a well-known and respected art venue in the Lynchburg area. Attendance is good, especially on First Fridays, and LAC is a designated Trolley Stop. LAC gallery space is clean and pleasant. Your artwork looks good here. LAC membership gives the artist a place to meet other artists, take classes and make art friends. LAC provides place where the artist can show artwork on a regular basis, such as monthly in the Members Gallery, a featured artist show every three years, the yearly Christmas show, various judged and juried shows, and the judged Georgia Morgan show. Your art can be constantly on view. LAC provides quarterly general meetings for the membership with interesting speakers and demonstrations. LAC is actively seeking new programs and looking for other ways to improve the club to benefit member artists. 5 LAC s Upcoming Juried Show Concerning the Spiritual in Art August 2014 Our next juried show has been switched from July 2014 to August 2014, and Patrick Ellis and Mitchell Bond from Goose Creek Studio in Bedford have graciously agreed to serve as jurors/judges. We are making a few changes for this show: we will have an online submission for digital images of your work, and you will need to mail in your entry form and fee to the Art Club. Note the discounted entry fee for active members! We will have the details finalized in the next few days, and will and publish the formal call for entries and entry form on the website. CONCERNING THE SPIRITUAL IN ART Call for Entries A juried survey of regional 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional art exploring the themes of faith, community, and spiritual life. August 1- August 17, 2014 Jurors: Mitchell Bond and Patrick Ellis Open to all artists working in, but not limited to, paint, sculpture, metal, photography, printmaking, fiber, mixed media, mosaics, collage, drawing, glass, ceramics, etc. Members and non-members of the Lynchburg Art Club (LAC) are invited to submit entries. The exhibition is not intended to be a competition, but rather a survey of work by regional artists who explore the universal experiences of faith, community, and spiritual life. The jurors are looking for art that moves the viewer beyond the current time, expresses an inner spirit, or seeks to communicate the complexities and interconnectedness of human life. The jurors are not looking for representations of religious images or persons, but rather work that denotes an understanding of the creative imagination and artistic expression as primary sources for communicating human identity and meaning. This is not a blind juried process. Artists are encouraged to submit both an artist s statement and websites/ Facebook information with their entries so that the jurors can better grasp an overview of the artists work. The artist must have something to say, mastery over form is not the artistic goal, but rather the use and adaption of forms to communicate or represent inner meaning. Wassily Kandinsky, Concerning the Spiritual In Art, 1912 Recognitions: Three Portiuncula Awards ($250 each) will be given to artists whose work most powerfully and thoughtfully explores and expresses the universal experiences of faith, community, and spiritual life. Award reception will be on First Friday, August 1, from 5-8 PM. The jurors will present recognitions and make a few comments about the jury process and the art represented in the exhibit. This exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 16. All 2-D entries must be framed or gallery wrap, wired for hanging. We cannot accept saw-tooth hangers or metal loops embedded in cardboard backing. Please make sure your work/s is/are labeled with your name and title on the back. Entry Fee: LAC Members: $25, nonmembers $35, for up to three items. 5
