1 Volume 11 Issue 1 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE SPORT CO-ORDINATOR What a summer, after the World Cup Football disaster we were lifted with numerous successes at the Commonwealth and the more recent Invictus Games. We now look forward to the excitement of the forthcoming Ryder Cup, Rugby World Cup and of course our very special LASP events! In LASP, as most of you are aware we have numerous events and competitions. PE Coordinators and I are very proud of the determination, respect, effort, commitment and sportsmanship shown by so many competitors at these events. Indeed we are equally proud of SPORTS CREW students who help at their own school sports activities and at some LASP events. We look forward to seeing the competitors & SPORTS CREW in action again at LASP events during this year. Of course none of the above opportunities would happen without the team of LASP PE Coordinators and warm thanks go to all as well as a big welcome to new members of the team, Miss Donnelly [Lyminster], Mr Langois [St Catherine s] and Ms Bull [Cornfield] Ms Fell [Locality Lead for PE & School Sport] LASP LEGACY LEAGUE TROPHY The LASP LEGACY TROPHY 2013/14 was, after 30 events jointly won by ARUNDEL & SUMMERLEA. They both had an unbelievable 349 points each. A fantastic achievement for both schools WELL DONE! EMPHASIS ON PARTICIPATION PROMPTS CHANGE TO LEGACY LEAGUE SCORING SYSTEM! The team of PE Coordinators met recently and agreed that PARTICIPATION was as, if not more important than competition. Recognising smaller schools are at a disadvantage as they have less to choose from for their teams we have devised a new scoring system. The following system will therefore be used at LASP events this year. Positional points will be gained as per usual with first place gaining the most down to the last position the least. Participation points will be awarded as follows; When St Catherine s, Cornfield and St Marys enter they will get an extra 3 points, when Arundel and St Philips enter they will receive an extra 2 points and the remaining 4 bigger schools an extra 1 point. Hopefully this will be a fairer system and will result in an even more exciting journey throughout the year as each school strives to PARTICIPATE in each event in attempt to improve upon their final 2013/14 position. 2 LASP SUMMER TERM EVENTS A selection of participants from last terms events. All should be proud to represent the school and gain points for their school toward the LASP LEGACY LEAGUE. Well done to all and especially to those who were nominated by team mates to receive the Olympic Value certificate. LASP LEGACY LEAGUE FINAL POSITIONS Positions in the LASP Legacy League after 30 events are as follows: Joint 1st Summerlea & Arundel 3rd = RCPS 4th = River Beach 5th = St Philips Joint 6th = Lyminster & St Marys 8th = White Meadows and 9th = St Catherine s CAN YOU HELP YOUR SCHOOL DO EVEN BETTER NEXT YEAR? SOUTHERN AREA PARTNERSHIP TRI GOLF FINALS Arundel and Summerlea progressed through to the second round as they came 1st and 2nd at the LASP Tri Golf event. They did LASP proud as they competed against the other locality winners from within The Southern Area Partnership. Summerlea came 1st and Arundel 3rd. Tremendous result as there are over 60 schools in the whole partnership!

3 SAINSBURYS SCHOOL GAMES The School Games forms a key part of the programme to deliver a meaningful sporting legacy of the London 2012 Olympics. The focus of the School Games is to engage and encourage more young people than ever before, to participate in high quality school competition. Students from 3 LASP schools represented the Southern Area Partnership at the Sussex School Games which were held at the K2 in Crawley. Congratulations to the Summerlea Tri Golf team who obtained Silver medal [2 nd best in the whole county!] and to athletes from Arundel and Lyminster schools who took silver in the Inclusive Athletics competition. Arundel Y5/6 Hockey team unfortunately did not medal but should be praised for their hard efforts which gained valuable points to help Southern Area Partnership win the games for the third year on the trot. A great result for LASP! - and of course for our Southern Area Partnership! TALENTED AND ABLE SESSIONS The LASP talented and able girls had a go in the Spring term and last term the lads from several schools had extra sessions at TLA in Basketball, Handball, Stoolball, Tennis and Badminton. Watch this space as more opportunities will be given this year!

4 LASP LOCALITY TENNIS TRIP A great time was had by all at the locality tennis trip to the International Tennis event at Eastbourne s Devonshire Park. Year 3/4 children had the opportunity to watch the professionals play singles and doubles matches and had a chance to try out their skills in the play zone. Fantastic day and the sun shone for the second year running! Do you want to learn how to play / improve your tennis? If so why not enrol on our Locality Tennis Club? Mondays after school from 4pm-5pm in the Old Sports Hall at TLA. Starts Monday 29th September until Monday 20th October 3 per session. Sessions will continue after half term Those wishing to attend the first batch of 4 sessions should return form with a cheque payable to TLA for 12. LOCALITY TENNIS CLUB ENROLMENT FORM Please send this form to Ms Fell at TLA or hand it in to Stuart Lister on the first Tennis session Childs Name School & Year Group Medical Conditions that the coach needs to be aware of [if any] Address Parent/ Carer Contact Number [s] Every attempt will be made to let you know if in the unlikely event that this club is cancelled. However there are occasions when the communications break down please therefore always escort your child to the Sports Hall to double check that tennis is still on. No valuables should be worn when playing and it is advised that children do not bring any item of value to the club as no responsibility will be taken by the instructor for any loss or damage whilst at the club
