2 General Information COURSE DESCRIPTION The Mayo Clinic Symposium on Sports Medicine has been developed for healthcare professionals with an interest in sports medicine or sports-related conditions and injuries. The format of this program is case oriented and provides an integrated approach to the injured athlete. Case presentations, lectures, and video demonstrations make this course attractive to all sports medicine practitioners. COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the symposium, participants should be able to: Recognize, evaluate, and appropriately triage osteochondral injuries of the knee Discuss options for viscosupplementation, chondroitin sulfate use, and glucosamine sulfate use with patients and colleagues Evaluate and treat spondylolysis and related injuries Discuss the role of manipulation in low back pain Identify the challenges of the disabled athlete from both the physician s and athlete s perspectives Appropriately prescribe elastic resistance training for rehabilitation Identify major anatomical structures about the shoulder Discuss the evaluation and treatment of SLAP lesions Identify major orthopedic landmarks on MRIs and radiographs of common joints Provide counseling to patients and health care practitioners regarding ephedra, creatine, steroids, HGH, and DHEA Discuss transitioning sport-specific training from the gym to the playing field Attendance at this Mayo course does not indicate nor guarantee competence or proficiency in the performance of any procedures that may be discussed or taught in this course. INTENDED AUDIENCE This course is designed for primary care physicians including family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics; physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians; and orthopedic surgeons involved with sports as well as residents in training, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nurses, and others working with active populations. CREDIT Mayo Foundation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Mayo Foundation designates this educational activity for a maximum of 11 category 1 credits towards the AMA Physician s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. The NATA Board of Certification (P-476) has approved Mayo Foundation as a continuing medical education provider for Certified Athletic Trainers. This activity is approved for 11 contact hours. Other health care professionals will be provided a certificate of attendance for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.

3 DATE AND LOCATION The 13th Annual Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Symposium will be held November 14-15, The course will be held at the Exhibit Hall, Mayo Civic Center, 30 Civic Center Drive SE, Rochester, Minnesota. REGISTRATION To register, complete the attached registration form and return by mail or fax. The registration fee includes tuition, comprehensive course syllabus, continental breakfasts, luncheon, and break refreshments. A letter of confirmation will be sent upon receipt of payment and the completed registration form. Please present this letter when checking in at the meeting registration desk. CANCELLATION POLICY Your registration fee, less a $50 administrative fee, will be refunded when written notification is received by the Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education prior to October 31, No refunds will be made after October 31, TRAVEL Rochester, Minnesota, is a friendly city that greets thousands of visitors from around the world each year. The city is serviced by a modern international airport with multiple flights daily from Chicago and Minneapolis via American or Northwest Airlines. Access to and from the airport is provided by taxi cab and shuttle service. The airport is located approximately 10 driving miles from the Mayo Clinic complex. Stuart, M.D. Department of Orthopedics Sports Medicine Center Visiting Faculty Thomas C. Purvis, R.P.T. Focus On Fitness LLC, Oklahoma City, OK Tom is a licensed physical therapist specializing in orthopedic rehabilitation for over 12 years. He is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer through both the NASM and ACE, and holds his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification through the NSCA. Tom currently owns Focus On Fitness LLC, through which he provides educational videos, lectures, and workshops on the biomechanics and teaching of resistance exercise. In 1997, he founded the Resistance Training Specialist Program. This program is widely considered to be the most in-depth certification program in the nation on the biomechanics of resistance exercise and the first in the fitness industry to utilize cadaver anatomy labs as part of the curriculum. Tom also serves as a biomechanical consultant for resistance equipment companies, and a contributing writer for multiple fitness magazines and journals. He is an internationally recognized speaker on the topics of resistance training, exercise equipment, and fitness. Robert D. Bart Bardwell Founder and Director, Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch Bart is a wheelchair athlete and has just completed his 100th marathon. He is a national motivational speaker, founder and director of a youth ranch in Minnesota, counselor, and coach.
