3 What Am Going to Learn in LG 1? After this guide you should be able to: 1.1 Types of Income A wage is the pay given for each hour of work. This does not include any deductions. Gross pay is the total wages for a given amount of time (daily, weekly, two weeks, etc) before deductions. What Are These Guides About? What are some ways that people are paid? Is it the same for every type of job/employee? Examples could include wages (by the hour), salary, contract work, piecework, commission, wages plus tips, etc. What are the metric units for measuring length? How long is a millimeter (mm), centimeter (cm), meter (m), kilometer (km)? 1.2 Overtime Pay Overtime is often paid at time and a half which means you get 1.5 times your hourly wage for those extra hours. If you work a LOT of overtime, you could receive double time, which means you get 2 times your regular hourly wage per overtime hour. What are some good referents or objects we can use for estimating these lengths when a ruler isn t available? What New Words Should I Learn? (These definitions should be added to your Math Journal Glossary) salary piecework wages plus tips time and a half referents contract work commission gross pay double time There is a test at the end of LG 2 which covers Both LG 1 & 2 material. Bring your marked guide work for LG 3 & 4 and review package with you when you come to get test permission. LG Tests have 3 parts: Part a: Multiple choice Part b: free response Part C: solve & describe. Why does x 0 = 1? By the quotient law, you know that x 3 /x 3 = x (3 3) = x 0. But anything divided by itself is 1, so x 3 /x 3 = 1. Things that are equal to the same thing are equal to each other: if x 3 /x 3 is equal to both 1 and x 0, then 1 must equal x 0. Symbolically, x 0 = x (3 3) = x 3 /x 3 = 1
