1. Contribution to LSSU Mission/Vision/Strategic Plan Lukenda School of Business (LSB) Programs Overview LSB is currently one of LSSU s 12 schools and is affiliated with the School of Engineering and Technology reporting to a common dean. Beginning with the academic year, LSB will be aligned with LSSU s Professional School recognizing that LSB specifically prepares students for professional careers. LSB students comprise approximately 15 percent of LSSU s total enrollment. LSB has the second highest enrollment for all bachelor programs (328 students for the academic year), demonstrating its importance to LSSU s future. In addition, LSB has earned a key global accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), demonstrating LSSU s commitment to providing quality business education. LSB offers degree completion programs at its main campus in Sault Ste. Marie, MI and at regional centers in Petoskey, MI and Escanaba, MI, allowing students to earn a LSSU degree without traveling to the main campus and demonstrating that LSSU directly serves the regional community in addition to the local community. LSB regional center classes are offered on a rotating-basis, may be offered online and are usually scheduled on weeknights or weekends to accommodate nontraditional and working students. LSB also offers evening classes on the main campus to accommodate nontraditional and working students. 3 Lukenda School of Business Bachelor of Science: Business Administration The Business Administration degree provides students with a broad overview of business concepts, together with particular emphasis in one business area as defined by a minor selected by the student. Minors include one of the following: Accounting-Finance, Economics-Finance, Human Resource Management, International Business, Marketing, Public Relations, Sports Marketing or cognate of 15 or more credits preapproved by the dean. The intent of this degree is to create a well-rounded graduate with a basic understanding of all aspects of a business organization, both in the office and on the workplace floor. This degree is designed specifically for individuals who acquired training at community colleges, technical institutes, industry-related schools, etc., or have several years of workplace experience, and want to continue their education in the area of business. The Business Administration program is one of the smallest programs offered by LSB with 29 students enrolled during the academic year, representing approximately eight percent of the LSB s bachelor program enrollments. Business Administration Advancement of LSSU s Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals The Business Administration program is essential to the advancement of LSSU s and LSB s vision, mission and strategic goals. LSB s vision, mission and strategic goals are consistent with LSSU s vision, mission and strategic goals. The seven strategies identified in the LSSU strategic plan have been adopted by LSB as the framework for the LSB strategic plan. Objectives are aligned with the strategic goals, and action plans are defined to achieve the objectives. LSB Vision Statement: The Lukenda School of Business will grow and evolve to keep our students at the forefront of sustainable business practices and technological advances. The School will distinguish itself by contributing to regional economic development, as well as providing experiential learning opportunities that capitalize on the unique setting. The Business Administration program is reviewed regularly to ensure students receive an education that will help them compete in the marketplace, providing a qualified labor pool to businesses and contributing to regional economic development. This program provides a broad background in business by covering functional areas of business, helping students implement good business practices, and keeping up with technological advances. For example, students are required to take courses which include introduction to business; business statistics; business communications; business law; business, government and society; managing cultural differences; and business policy. These courses make up half of the core curriculum required by all LSB s programs. Page 3 of 23

LSB Mission Statement: Through dedication to excellence in teaching, the Lukenda School of Business develops students to become economically, socially, and environmentally responsible, and empowers them to become business and community leaders in a global society. LSB s commitment to hiring academically- and professionally-qualified faculty as defined by ACBSP provides a dual approach to excellence in teaching that includes providing qualified faculty in the business discipline and experts from the business marketplace (faculty qualifications to be discussed later). Moreover, the collaboration between business faculty and students outside of the classroom through student clubs provides students with opportunities to work on projects that contribute to LSSU and the local community. The Business Administration program contributes to the advancement of the LSB s strategic goals, specifically highlighting the following goals (as demonstrated in the narrative above): SG1: Collaborative, Committed Learning Environment SG3: Student Experience SG4: Student Learning and Development SG5: Regional Community SG6: Educational Support As to the advancement of LSSU s vision and mission, the Business Administration program: launches students on the path to rewarding careers in management serves the regional, state, national and global communities by providing a qualified labor pool to businesses and contributing to economic development provides a local university choice for students who seek a quality management education and a competitive edge in an evolving job market covers key concepts taught by quality faculty with practical real-world experience to provide a well-rounded education. Business Administration Program complies with Assumed Practice A.7.a LSB website includes the LSB vision/mission and is in compliance with Assumed Practice A.7.a. Page 4 of 23

Student Performance on Major Field Test in Business LSB students take the MFT typically during their senior year and generally achieve national averages on the MFT, demonstrating delivery of program quality. See more detail in the Program Assessment section below. Student Clubs (Contributing to the Profession and the Community) Business Administration students participate in Enactus and SHRM student clubs. Enactus is a community of student, academic, and business leaders committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable, world. Enactus is a worldwide organization in over 36 countries. There are over 535 competing teams alone in the United States, and more than 1,600 in the world. More than 66,000 students involved in Enactus put in over 7 million volunteer hours per year to help improve people's livelihoods. Enactus has worked with people and organizations in the local area such as the Diane Peppler Resource Center, elementary schools, and Friends of Caring Animal Shelters (FOCAS). Projects have even included far away places such as Cameroon, Africa. Members participate in the national Enactus job fair. LSSU always has a few members leave the competition with jobs in hand. Participating companies have included established names such as Hershey, Ford, Home Depot and Walmart. Enactus has over 300 corporate sponsors. Business Administration students who opt to have a human resources minor also participate in the SHRM Student Chapter of LSSU, which is part of the world s largest human resource management association. For students, SHRM offers a vast assortment of resources such as SHRM publications, webcasts, conferences, career networking opportunities and HR career resources. The chapter hosts guest speakers at LSSU. The chapter also helps those in the club prepare for HR certification which takes place during the spring semester. Many students also participate in the business honor society, Sigma Beta Delta (now called Delta Mu Delta). The society is considered to be one of the highest forms of national recognition a business student can achieve, open to juniors and seniors and selected based on class ranking and student involvement. Computer Lab The Business Administration program uses LSB s computer lab for teaching, where students gain hands-on experience work with business software such as MS Excel and Word. Specifically, BUSN 211 Business Statistics and BUSN 231 Business Communication are taught in the computer lab every semester. Professional Advisory Board The Lukenda School of Business Professional Advisory Board (PAB) is comprised of over 20 members from the local and regional business community. PAB provides guidance and insight as LSB reviews programs and makes program improvements. Moreover, students have the opportunity to present student club activities to the board and interact with board members, Page 11 of 23

providing students with networking opportunities to secure internships and full-time employment with PAB members and their companies. PAB members and their companies also provide generous financial support for LSB initiatives. Gifts to the South Hall Renovation Project, the new home of LSB in January 2017, are a great example of this support. Student Placement Rates for Business Administration Recently, Business Administration graduates have not participated in the senior survey and have not reported employment information. Since this data is unavailable, we cannot calculate placement rates for this program. Page 12 of 23

5. Program Assessment Program Learning Objectives and Process for Evaluation LSB regularly reviews, monitors and improves its programs to ensure delivery of quality business education. LSB has developed student learning objectives for each of its programs. Business Administration student learning objectives are provided below. The extent to which each program course addresses the student learning objectives is provided on the next chart. Page 13 of 23

External Evaluation of Student Knowledge in Business Disciplines LSB students take the Major Field Test (MFT) in their senior year. Results are used to evaluate students general knowledge about business disciplines. MFT results do not provide detail to evaluate the specific student learning objectives from each program course nor provide enough detail to evaluate only Business Administration students. Results are evaluated to determine areas of weakness among LSB students and then target those areas for improvement. MFT results for main campus students in a few business disciplines are provided below. The academic years reported are for Fall 2011 to Spring LSB students performed adequately against the national average based on the results graphed below, but there is room for improvement. Spring 2015 MFT results demonstrate that only 54 percent of LSB students (13 of 24 students) received an overall score above 50 percent for Mean Percent Correct. In contrast, the Escanaba students exceeded the national average in management and performed better than 75 percent of all students taking the exam. (See chart below.) Furthermore, while main campus students scored about equal to the national average in information systems, they only performed better than 38 percent of all students; while Escanaba students performed significantly higher and performed better than 88 percent of all students. Escanaba students outperform main campus students except in the legal and social environment discipline. No students from Petoskey sat for the spring 2015 MFT exam. (See chart below.) Page 20 of 23

6. Opportunity Analysis Business Administration s areas for improvement include increasing enrollment primarily in the regional centers, retaining qualified adjunct faculty and maintaining program quality. In addition, LSB s new facility will be ready for occupancy in January Facilities LSSU received approval from the State of Michigan to proceed with the renovation and addition of South Hall, the future home of the LSB. The renovated building will increase the square footage dedicated to academics on campus by providing six new classrooms, four seminar rooms and three flexible project rooms. It will also connect students to the world through enhanced technology, including securities trading lab and spaces equipped with digital displays and mobile and smart devices. The Business Administration program will benefit from the enhanced technology in the classroom. Increasing Enrollment LSB participates in LSSU events to increase enrollment. Faculty contact students by phone, mail and , and professors are available to meet students when they visit the campus; however, enrollment remains a concern. Moreover, retention is also important. Students commented on the spring 2015 senior survey that high faculty turnover and courses taught by adjunct professors are weaknesses of LSB both issues can affect LSB s reputation, affecting enrollment and retention. In the past year, LSB and LSSU have taken steps to increase enrollment. LSB is improving its reputation by seeking out and obtaining accreditation for most of its programs through ACBSP, participating in LSSU prospective student events, as well as visiting local and regional high schools with admissions staff. LSB has partnered with Sault College in Ontario, Canada (a 2- year institution) to encourage their students to complete a Bachelor s degree at LSB. LSB began specifically targeting non-traditional students who work full-time by offering evening courses and developing a Business Administration degree targeting those students. LSB offers online programs during the summer semester to increase enrollment in its programs; however, more online courses may need to be offered during the fall and spring semesters to increase enrollment from the non-traditional students. LSSU has made changes to increase enrollment including One Rate at Lake where prospective students residing outside of Michigan pay the same rate as students residing in Michigan. LSB will benefit from increased enrollment as a result of these changes. The Business Administration program should also benefit. Retaining Faculty Page 22 of 23

Retaining faculty is difficult and complex; three faculty searches have been conducted over the past year at the LSB. The Business Administration program lost an experienced professor at the beginning of the academic year (who has since been replaced) and is experiencing difficulty in finding qualified adjunct professors for Escanaba and Petoskey. LSB professors are very responsive to students and are seen as a major strength of the LSB, as well as small class sizes as supported by comments on the spring 2015 senior survey. As a result, while students believe they are receiving a quality business education, they express concern when good professors leave. Program Quality Program quality was detailed in section 4 above, but there are opportunities for improvement that LSB is currently working on: A new facility, new classrooms with up-to-date technology, teaching computer labs, project rooms for faculty and students. Addressing faculty turnover by recognizing the changing education industry, recognizing the challenges presented by the school s location, and recognizing the limited resources to attract qualified faculty. Providing faculty with resources so that they continue to be the strength of LSB such as additional professional development funds, classroom resources, and up-to-date technological equipment. Finding additional ways for the PAB to contribute more value to LSB, its programs and students. Page 23 of 23
