1 IACBE Annual Report For Academic Year: Mission of the School of Business: Student Learning Information for Accounting (BBA) Program Intended Student Learning Outcomes for the Accounting Program : 1. Students will have an understanding of the functional areas of finance, management and marketing. 2. Students will understand the language, techniques, and functions involved in accounting. 3. Students will have the ability to communicate effectively. 4. Students will have the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills in solving problems, including creativity and ethical analysis. 1. Comprehensive Business Exam (CBE) 100% of accounting graduates will score above the national average benchmark score in the area of accounting. 2. Capstone Online Simulation Glo-Bus 60% of the students will score above the 50 th percentile ranking on Financial Management and Marketing Management. 1. Senior Exit Survey 90% of the students will rate their understanding of finance, management, and marketing at or above 4.0 on 5 pt. scale. 2. Senior Internship Interview 90% of the students will report that they have an understanding of the language, techniques and functions of accounting as demonstrated in their internship experience. 2 Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. All exceeded the basic proficiency and benchmark scores in accounting % of the accounting graduates exceeded the 50 th percentile ranking in both areas. Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. 75% of the students rated their understanding of finance, management and marketing at or above a 4.0. The management area was rated the lowest with a 3.5 avg. rating. 2. There were no internships during the long semesters. Resutls from the 2013 summer interns will be included in the IE report. Proposed Courses of Action for Improvement in Areas for which Performance Targets Were Not : 1. N/A 2. N/A Not 3. With fewer than 10 accounting students, the 90% goal is difficult to evaluate and perhaps should be lower. The department will seek ways to integrate management applications and review the BBA core curriculum requirements as to the adequacy of management coverage. Not Mission of the School of Business: Student Learning Information for Business Administration (BS) Program Intended Student Learning Outcomes for the Business Administration (BS) program : 1. Students will have an understanding of the functional areas of accounting, finance, management, and marketing. 2. Comprehensive Business Exam (CBE) 55% of students will score above the national average (Beta Test Results) in the areas of accounting, finance, management and marketing. 2. Capstone Online Simulation Glo-Bus 65% of the students will score above the 50 th percentile in the areas of Financial Analysis and Marketing Management. 1. Senior Exit Survey 80% of the students will report that they have developed competent communication skills as a result of their major field courses. 2. Senior Focus Group 100% of the students will be able to describe a specific learning activity that was taught within their major that significantly enhanced their analytical and critical thinking skills. Summary of Results from Implementing : students graduated from the business administration program in All were graduates from Brownwood. The following data represents the percentage of students who scored above the 50 th percentile ranking in financial analysis and marketing management based on their performance in the GLO-BUS business strategy simulation: Total HPU Students (12) Brownwood Students (12) El Paso Students (0) Financial Analysis 80% 80% 0% Marketing Management 47% 47% 0% Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. 94% rated their writing skills at the competent or highly competent levels. 81% rated their oral communication skills at the competent or highly competent levels % described a specific learning activity that helped them develop their analytical and critical thinking skills. The most described activity was the Glo-Bus strategy simulation. Not Proposed Courses of Action for Improvement in Areas for which Performance Targets Were Not : 1. The target was missed only in the accounting area with 53% of the students meeting or exceeding the benchmark standard. The goal was raised from 50% to 55% this year. The accounting curriculum will be reviewed this year with the insights from a new accounting program director. 2. Students performed very well in the area of financial analysis with 80% exceeding the benchmark standard. 47% of the students met the standard in marketing management performance. The business administration major contains one marketing course, principles of marketing. Whereas, there are 9 hours of accounting and finance coursework. The curriculum needs to be reviewed to see if more balance between the disciplines may be warranted. 3. N/A IACBE Annual Report Form 4

5 Mission of the School of Business: Student Learning Information for Management (BBA) Program Intended Student Learning Outcomes for Management: 1. Students will have an understanding of the functional area of management. 2. Students will have an understanding of the ethical environments of business. 3. Students will have the ability to understand the function of Human Resource Management as it relates to the organization. 4. Students will the ability to understand the decision-making model as it relates to their major choices. 1. Comprehensive Business Exam (CBE) 60% of the students will score above the national average in the management portion of the CBE. 2. Capstone Simulation Glo-Bus 50% of the students will perform at the exemplary level with regard to corporate social responsibility according to results from the Glo- Bus experience. 1. Senior Focus Group 100% of the students will report that they feel adequately prepared to be successful in the business world based on their knowledge of management functions. 2. Senior Exit Survey 80% of the students will report that they were able to present a problem thay have solved using the decision-making model. Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. 40% of the graduates scored at or above the national average in the area of management on the CBE. Not IACBE Annual Report Form 5

6 % of the graduates scored at or above the exemplary level (65 th percentile) with regard to corporate social responsibility. Summary of Results from Implementing : % of the students reported that they felt adequately prepared to be successful in the business world based on their knowledge of management functions. The students spoke favorably about the faculty s efforts to integrate real-world business applications along with theory % of the students reported that they used the decision-making model to solve a problem and give the presentation to their classmates. Proposed Courses of Action for Improvement in Areas for which Performance Targets Were Not : Not 1. A closer analysis of the individual competencies covered in the management portion of the CBE showed that our students performed very well on management principles and organizational concepts, but did not do well on the human resource management processes. The course was taught by a new instructor this past year; however, a new instructor for HR will be used beginning in the 2013 fall semester. The new instructor brings recent HR experience along with a PhD in organizational development. 2. N/A 3. 7 Intended Student Learning Outcomes for Management Information Systems: 1. Students will have an understanding of the functional areas of accounting, finance, management and marketing. 2. Students will understand the language, techniques, and functions involved in information systems. 3. Students will have the ability to communicate effectively. 4. Students will the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills in complex problems, including creativity and ethical analysis. 1. CIS Benchmark Exam 100% of students will score above 62 on a 100 point scale on the departmental benchmark exam. 2. Information Systems Analyst Exam (ISA) 60% of students will score above the 50th percentile ranking on the Information Systems Analyst nationally standardized exam. 1. Senior Exit Survey 90% of the students will rate their understanding of accounting, finance, management and marketing at or above a 4.0 on a 5pt scale. 2. CIS Senior Reflection Interview 100% of the students will report that they feel adequately prepared to be successful in the business world based on their knowledge of accounting, finance, management and marketing functions. Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. There were no graduates from the MIS program during the academic year. 2. There were no graduates from the MIS program during the academic year. Students will have an understanding of the functional areas of marketing. 2. Students will have an understanding of their career path. 3. Students will the ability to understand how to apply a Christian-service perspective to their future career. 1. Comprehensive Business Exam (CBE ) 50% of the students will score at or above the benchmark range in the area of marketing on the CBE. 2. Capstone Online Simulation Glo-Bus 50% of the marketing graduates will score above the 50 th percentile on financial analysis and marketing management in the Glo-Bus exercise. 1. Senior Exit Survey 90% of the students will rate their understanding of marketing at or above the 4.0 rank on a 5 pt scale. IACBE Annual Report Form 8

9 2. Senior Focus Group 90% of the students will report that they feel adequately prepared to find work in marketing or the field of their choice including further graduate study. Summary of Results from Implementing : % of the marketing graduates met or exceeded the national average bencearned a proficient (at least 80% of questions correct) rating on marketing management. The graduates mastery of marketing related issues was their strongest result on the test % of the graduates scored above the 50 th percentile in marketing management, however they almost met the criteria in financial analysis. The students who did not meet the standard for marketing management did not do well on any of the other skill areas, in fact, their highest ratings were in the area of marketing and generally were very close to the 50 th percentile standard. Summary of Results from Implementing : % of the graduates rated their understanding of the marketing function at a 4 o 5 on the 5 pt scale % of our marketing graduates agreed or strongly agreed that they were adequately prepared to find work in marketing or the field of their choice including graduate study. Proposed Courses of Action for Improvement in Areas for which Performance Targets Were Not : 1. N/A Not 2. Most of the marketing decisions have to do with advertising, which is only one dimension of marketing strategy and tactics. Also 2/3 of the students who did poorly were transfer students and undertook most of their basic business classes elsewhere. In the future, we will work closer with transfer students on marketing and basic business to ensure a consistent knowledge base. 3. N/A Not IACBE Annual Report Form 9

10 Student Learning Information for Master of Business Administration Program Mission of the School of Business: Intended Student Learning Outcomes for Master of Busioness Administration Program: 1. Graduates will be able to articulate a sound tactical-strategic plan for an organization in their chosen field. 2. Graduates will have developed an appropriate understanding of basic theory in marketing, management, and financial areas for organizational enhancement. 3. Graduates will have developed a working understanding of the ethical challenges in their given fields and be able to integrate their personal worldview and accountability plan to manage these ever-present personal temptations in their careers and with their family lives. 4. Graduates will have had successful experiences working with organizations in various settings by participating in project-internships. 1. ETS MFT MBA 75% of the MBA graduates will score at or above the national average on the strategic planning criterion. 2. Capstone Field-based Applied Project 100% of the MBA graduates will achieve an acceptable assessment by the MBA panel. 1. MBA Exit Survey 80% of students will confident in their understanding of basic theory in marketing, management and financial areas. 2. MBA Focus Group 100% of the students will feel confident in their understanding of the ethical challenges in their chosen field. Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. The target criteria was met with 100% scoring above the national average on the strategic planning criteria. Not IACBE Annual Report Form 10

11 2. 100% of the graduates received an acceptable or better assessment on their tactical strategic plans as determined by the MBA panel. Summary of Results from Implementing : 1. Students rated management as the area in which they were most confident with 88% indicating they were very confident. Marketing was the next highes rated with 63% very confident. However, only 37% indicated a very high level of confidence in financial matters % of the MBA graduates felt confident (and were able to articulate in writing) an understanding of the ethical challenges they would face in their future careers. Proposed Courses of Action for Improvement in Areas for which Performance Targets Were Not : 1. N/A 2. N/A Not 3. It is recommended that the finance courses use as much in-class time as possible and minimize the amount delivered via online instruction. All MBA faculty members will be encouraged to integrate financial and accounting applications in their courses. It is recommended that those students working directly in financial areas choose a project that would further develop their financial skills when they determine their topic for the capstone field-based research activity.
