1 Dictionary Hold-Up Challenge: Find a way to hold a dictionary 15 cm above the table with 6 sheets of paper and one roll of tape (20 mins). Marble Madness Challenge: You and your team have been selected to make the longest, trickiest course in which to deliver a marble to its final destination. The longer and trickier the better! Materials: tape paper cardstock Marble Run Challenge: Create a 3 dimensional, free standing marble run. The marble must travel at least 40 centimeters. Materials: marbles (3) tape (1 roll) cardboard tubes large index cards (12 cards) Large craftsticks (6 sticks) paper clips (1 box)

2 Additional Challenge: Can you include at least 3 turns and/or 2 changes in level to your track and still have the marble travel 40 cm? Marshmallow Challenge The Challenge : Create the tallest freestanding structure out of the given materials! Rules: No taping anything to the desks. Materials: 20 pieces of spaghetti 91 cm of tape * teams will measure out 91 cm of string 1 marshmallow Notecard Build Materials: notecards (1 pkg.) Challenge: Build a structure at least 12 cm high with notecards that can support our class hawk for at least 30 seconds (20 mins.) Double Challenge: Can you do this with the fewest amount of cards?

3 Engineering Challenge: Paperclip Chain Using one box of paper clips, can your group create a paper clip chain that will hold the most weight? Materials: (for a group) One package of paper clips Plastic bucket or container with handle Weights (can be pennies or other items) POM POM LAUNCHER The Challenge : Invent a device that launches a pom pom into the air. The further it travels the better! Hints: Think about devices that launch things into the air. How do they work? Will your launcher be hand-held or sit on the floor or table? Materials: The contents of the bag should be used to make your pom pom launcher but you do not have to use them all. (3) paper cups (30 oz.) (1) roll of transparent tape (5) straws (10) craftsticks (1) piece of string (30 cm) (6) rubber bands (4) large index cards (15) paper clips You may also use any of the following items to help you with your challenge: scissors stapler and staples

4 Rubber Band Chains Challenge: You and your team have been selected to make the strongest chain possible from a handful of rubber bands! Your rubber band chain needs to be 60 cm long. Materials: rubber bands metric ruler (tool) Marshmallow Bridge Challenge: You have 5 minutes to devise a method to suspend/hold as many marshmallows above the ground as possible. You are working on creativity, building design, and number of marshmallow's successfully suspended. Construction Materials: 5' length of string 1 bag of large marshmallows 10 rubber bands 5 straws 10 toothpicks

5 Tin Foil Tower Engineering Challenge: What is the tallest free standing tower your group can build with only one box of aluminum foil? Materials: (for a group) One box of aluminum foil (25 sq. feet size) Scissors (tool) Tape measure/metric ruler (tool) What Floats Your Boat? Challenge: Design a clay boat that can hold the most paperclips without sinking. Materials for partner group: clay (1 block) paperclips (as many as possible!) How Much Mass Can Your Boat Float? STEM Challenge Have you ever wondered how a ship made of steel can float? Or better yet, how can a steel ship carry a heavy load without sinking? In this STEM challenge you will

6 make little boats out of aluminum foil to investigate how their size and shape affects how much mass they can carry and how this relates to the density of water. You will float your boat in the sea (our fish tank). Challenge: Can you build a boat that can hold the most amount of mass (pennies) using tinfoil? Double Challenge: Can you determine how much mass can be supported by boat hulls of various volumes and how this related to the density of water? Help Save Sam! Sam has been spending his summer boating on Lake Winnipesaukee. However, he s never learned how to swim, and he never wears his life preserver (bad decision!). Now the worst has happened! His boat has capsized and he s stuck! Fortunately, his life preserver is in the boat, unfortunately he does not know how to reach it without falling off and drowning. Problem: How can you and your team save Sam using only 1 paper clip per person. You may not touch Sam, the boat, or the life preserver directly with your hands. Materials: Gummy Worm Gummy Life Saver preserver 1 Plastic or Paper Cup
