Reading/Language Arts Grade 6 Capitalization of Proper Adjectives
Dear Parent or Guardian: Your son or daughter is currently learning to identify the correct use of capitalization in proper adjectives in a sentence. Here is your chance to help him or her practice this important skill. In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your son or daughter to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening. Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your son or daughter return it tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Your son or daughter s teacher Grade 6 Capitalization of Proper Adjectives 2004 Evans Newton Incorporated 1
CAPITALIZING PROPER ADJECTIVES Parent Pointer When reading and writing, it is important to be able to identify the different parts of speech that a sentence may contain. One of those parts of speech is an adjective. Adjectives help describe a noun in a sentence. Sometimes adjectives can be proper names. These adjectives are called proper adjectives. Using a capitalized proper noun as an adjective forms a proper adjective. These proper adjectives help describe the noun by telling who or what kind. Reading In the Home, On the Go, and For the Fun of It DIRECTIONS: With your parent or partner, read and discuss the information about proper adjectives on the Using Proper Adjectives Correctly page. Then, follow the directions to read and correct the sentences on the Capitalizing Proper Adjectives page. Talk About It After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity! Grade 6 Capitalization of Proper Adjectives 2004 Evans Newton Incorporated 2
Using Proper Adjectives Correctly A proper adjective is formed by using a capitalized proper noun as an adjective. Proper adjectives should always be capitalized. Example: The Main Street restaurant has the best French fries in the city. (Main Street functions as a proper adjective in the sentence, describing the noun restaurant; and French functions as a proper adjective in the sentence, describing the noun fries.) Reviewing Proper Nouns Japanese Carolina Boston American Oregon Mattel Russian October Thanksgiving Wednesday Using a Proper Noun as a Proper Adjective The Japanese car broke down in the middle of the road. My favorite football team is the Carolina Panthers. An American sailor saved the boy from drowning. The non-stop Oregon rainstorms have flooded many towns. The Topeka railroads were damaged after the train derailed. Two Russian cosmonauts manned the orbiting space station. The October heat was unbearable. Grade 6 Capitalization of Proper Adjectives 2004 Evans Newton Incorporated 3
Capitalizing Proper Adjectives Directions: In each of the following sentences, correctly capitalize the proper adjectives by writing it above the incorrectly capitalized word. 1. The man ate chinese food for lunch. 2. My mom and dad ate most of the thanksgiving turkey. 3. Yesterday, a new boston museum opened. 4. We went to Kimera s birthday party on friday night. 5. Our scout meeting is every wednesday night. 6. Jim Carrey s new movie is coming out next thursday afternoon. 7. The arizona state university football team lost its first game. 8. My uncle John collected japanese art and trinkets. 9. Our family is buying a new compaq computer this weekend. 10. The eurostar train line runs between London and Paris. Grade 6 Capitalization of Proper Adjectives 2004 Evans Newton Incorporated 4
The Back Page Talk About It Parent Ask your son or daughter the following questions: What is a proper adjective? How do we know when to capitalize a proper adjective? Student Answer the above questions in complete sentences on the bottom of this page (use the reverse side of this page if needed). OR Do one of the following activities, using the reverse side of this page: Write a short paragraph using at least five proper adjectives. Make sure each proper adjective is capitalized correctly. Make a list of proper nouns. Then, using them as proper adjectives, write a sentence for each one.
