1 North Union High School Course Syllabus College Prep English IV Instructor Information Instructor: Ashleigh Burleson Office Location: 401 North Franklin Street, Room 208 Telephone: Office (740) ex Office Hours/Conference Period: MTWThF 7 th Period- 12:25pm 1:10pm Course Identification Course Number: Course Name: College Prep English 4 Course Location: Room 208 Class Times: MTWThF 1 st and 4 th Periods Course Description/Overview Grade: 12 Credit: 1.0 Class Type: College Prep This course is designed to prepare students for college reading and writing. Students will study English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the present. Vocabulary study will continue with an emphasis on word parts and origins. Writing will focus on exposition, analysis and interpretation, persuasion, and research. Students should be able to use the reading, writing, critical thinking and research skills acquired in this class to find success in post-secondary opportunities. Course Learning Objectives Standards Instruction addresses the content skills of Ohio Academic Standards for English Language focusing on 12 th Grade Benchmarks with a specific emphasis on college preparation and a 21 st Century skill set. Philosophy, Goals and Objectives Reading, writing and critical thinking are lifelong skills that will continue to develop as long as you continue to build upon them. Students will analyze, synthesize and produce a variety of texts in order to demonstrate refined skills.
2 The objectives are to: 1. Prepare for students for college level reading and writing. 2. Develop creative and critical thinking and writing skills. 3. Enhance student vocabulary and ability to identify unknown words through context and knowledge of Greek, Latin and Anglo-Saxon roots, prefixes and suffixes. 4. Emphasize the power of language as a tool that can be used different ways for different purposes and audiences. 5. Provide students with a wide range of reading, writing, and speaking opportunities that will further their success in post-secondary experiences. Course Resources Course Website(s) North Union Local Schools < Personal Website Required Course Text Glencoe British Literature (Can be accessed online). Required Course Supplies Notebook, binder, or folder- It is important that you keep all class materials organized. You are seniors; I will not be monitoring your organizational methods, but I do expect you to have your own system. If you need suggestions, feel free to ask. Late Assignments Students are responsible for all work assigned in this course. If you miss a day due to an excused absence, it is your responsibility to make-up any missed work. Late work will be accepted for up to 24 hours after the initial due date; however, late work will automatically be assigned 50% of the original point value. Major Assignments (Essays, presentations, etc) will be subject to a grade reduction of 10 points per day late. If there are extenuating circumstances and you know you will not be able to turn in an assignment on time, talk to me. I am much more willing to make accommodations before you miss a due date than I am after. Grading Scheme Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on a number of criteria throughout the year. These will include (but are not limited to): Class participation and group work- Students will be expected to participate in class discussions and work cooperatively in groups. Homework/Reading Assignments- Students will be expected to keep up with all assigned readings and homework. Class discussions and reading checks may be used to monitor students reading comprehension. Written tests and quizzes- Announced or unannounced tests/quizzes will cover material addressed in class and course readings. Research- Students will complete at least one written research project in MLA format.
3 Essays- Students will be asked to complete several written responses to the literature read in class. Specific assignment requirements and lengths may vary. All written work must be submitted in MLA format. Senior Seminars- Senior Seminars (student led reading discussions) will occur at several times throughout the year. Students will be notified of upcoming seminars and topics and given adequate time to prepare in advance. Oral Presentations/Speeches- Students may be expected to present relevant research or course material to their classmates as part of the course curriculum. Grading Policy Grades will be based on the following: Writing Assignments 400 Tests and Quizzes 300 Vocabulary 300 Class attendance/participation 200 Total Points 1200 Grading System Letter Grade Percentage Grade points/credit Rating A 90% & above 4.00 Excellent 1080/1200 B 80% 89% 3.00 Good 960/1079 C 70% 79% 2.00 Average 840/959 D 60% 69% 1.00 Below average /Inferior 720/839 F 59% and below 0.00 Failure >719 I Incomplete; given only when a student is unable to complete a segment of the course because of circumstances beyond the student s control. A grade of incomplete may be given only when approved in writing by the department chair or school dean.
4 Course Policies CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to: Respect yourself, classmates, and teacher at all times. abide by all policies found in the Student Handbook. be prepared and on time for class. complete all reading and homework assignments when due. use class time wisely and efficiently. participate in class discussions. pay attention and take notes when required. work effectively in groups. always put forth your best effort and write in complete sentences! FOLLOW THE WILDCAT WAY! HAVE FUN! Collaboration/Plagiarism Rules Plagiarism: This is the copying of all or a portion of someone else s work or borrowing someone else s ideas. Do not copy another s work- not a fellow student s or a professional s. Do not turn in another student s work or copy all or part of someone else s paper or homework. All outside resources used in course assignments, discussions or essays must be given proper credit in MLA format. Failure to do so is plagiarism. You will receive a zero on copied or plagiarized work. If you give your work to another student to copy you will also receive a zero. Plagiarism is intellectual theft and at the college level can result in a student failing the entire course or at the most serious level can result in a student being expelled from the university.
