1 Introduction: The following document is a draft of standards-designed, comprehensive Pacing Guide for high school English Grade 9. This document will evolve as feedback is accumulated. The Pacing Guide is designed to offer teachers a focused context of instructional goals, student learning objectives, and student performance outcomes. Grade: 9 (1) Students will build a framework for high school level academic writing by understanding the what of language, including: a) Grammar and punctuation correctness with an emphasis on the following: Capitalization Comma and semicolon usage Recognizing sentence boundaries errors (run-ons, comma splices, fragments) Sentence-level practice through sentence combining, sentence imitating, and sentence building b) Identify and utilize basic parts of speech with an emphasis on: Verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, conjunctions, interjections, subjects/predicates, direct/indirect objects c) Understand the essential components of the 5-paragraph essay format with and emphasis on the following: Writing an effective thesis statement Understanding the elements of a well-constructed body paragraph (2) Students will build a framework for high school level academic reading by understanding the what of reading including: a) Defining and recognizing, and applying grade nine core literary terms b) Read all texts for basic elements such as: Story elements (title, character, plot, conflict, etc.) Main ideas, purpose, supporting ideas
