Spanish 1 World Campus Page 2 of 22 Course Description and Goals Welcome to Spanish 1 Online at Penn State! This course is for students who are native speakers of a language other than Spanish. The purpose of this course is to develop and improve communication skills in Spanish while listening, reading, speaking, and writing in the target language. The course follows a communicative information-based task approach, which comes from the idea that languages are best learned when real world information becomes the focus of students activities. Therefore, during the semester, you will exchange real-life information about yourself with your classmates. There will be no late adds to this course. All times in this syllabus and ANGEL Course Calendar are for U.S. Eastern Time Zone. It is your responsibility to know how that translates to your time zone and to submit assignments and exams per these posted deadlines. Level of Proficiency Spanish 1 is designed for students who have not previously taken any Spanish or who have completed a maximum of one high school Spanish course within the four years immediately preceding admission to the university. Students with more course work in Spanish or with any Spanish background will not receive credit for Spanish 1. Native Spanish speakers and students with life-long contact with Spanish may not enroll in Spanish 1. There are no exceptions to this policy. For more information, please see the Placement Policy for Penn State Foreign Language Courses: Student/Instructor Communication How you can communicate with your instructor and your classmates: and office hours: You can contact your instructor using the tool provided by ANGEL. Your instructor will provide their office hours (see office hours link above) or through their own Adobe Connect Room by appointment. Please do not send s unrelated to class. ing your instructor should be your last resort. If your instructor asked you to go to their virtual office hours, you have to do so within a week. If you cannot attend their office hours, please send them your availability. You must check your every 24 hours, except during weekends. For concerns related to course content (e.g., problems with Spanish grammar, vocabulary), post your question in Foro de dudas. Technological issues: For concerns related to technology (e.g., problems with quizzes, using ANGEL, or MySpanishLab features), please contact the Spanish Basic Language Program s Technology Coordinator using the Help form ( found in the class s ANGEL page. Foro de dudas (General Content Questions): In the Foro de dudas you will be able to present your questions and doubts about grammar and vocabulary to the instructor. This is where you will post

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 3 of 22 content-based questions. You can post, read, share, and respond to other posts made by classmates, and you will be able to read the explanations given by the instructor. If you have a question about something, you can see if someone else has already had the same question and it has been answered here; if not, then you can post the question yourself. The Foro de dudas will not disappear; therefore you will have continuous access to this forum anytime. Please, do not post any technological problems or doubts (for technical issues use the Help Form in ANGEL). Cafetería: You will be able to use the Cafetería to share ideas or comments with your classmates (e.g. post a link to a good Spanish site, create study groups, socialize, etc.). However, be aware that your instructor will not respond to questions or comments posted in this forum. Grading Scale (based upon department guidelines) % A % A % C % B % C % B % D % B- 59.9%- F Assessment Components Testing procedures will be representative of the type of instruction, content, and practice offered in the course. The assessment components for this course are: 1. Online quizzes 20% 2. Communication Activities 15% Foro de discusión (4%) Zona cultural (4%) Tertulia (7%) 3. Exams 65% Exam 1 (20%) Exam 2 (20%) Exam 3 (25%) Online learning Spanish 1 Online will employ technology to achieve more one-on-one interaction between you and other students and between you and your instructor. Learning Spanish online will provide the following advantages: Self-pacing: You can take the time you need to do the course s online activities as long as you submit the activities by the deadline each week. Immediate feedback: You will receive your results immediately. Opportunity for improvement: You can submit most of your online activities more than once and therefore be able to learn from your errors. Easy access: You can complete online activities from any computer with access to the Internet through a reliable Internet browser (Firefox, Safari, or Chrome). Varying activity types: The wide variety of activity types accommodates different learning styles.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 4 of 22 Using ANGEL and MySpanishLab You will need to use the Penn State course management system called ANGEL to do your administrative quizzes (see the Administrative Assessments section below for more information), to review all your grammar and vocabulary tutorials (located in each weekly folder in ANGEL), and to complete your first online assignments (Lesson 0.1). No access code will be needed to access this content material. Check the course calendar in ANGEL for deadlines. There will NOT be an extension or a grace period for the completion of these first assignments. Click on to obtain basic information about this program. Starting in Week 3, you will need to use the course management system called My Spanish Lab (abbreviated from here on as MSL ) to complete your online assignments. A MSL access code (included with your textbook) and a course ID (included in the Orientation folder) will be needed to complete your online quizzes. Click on to obtain basic information about this system. Your instructor will not address questions related to technical problems. These questions should be addressed by filling out the help form at the following address: Make sure that you review your answers (accents, following instructions for lowercase, capital letters, formatting when needed, etc.) carefully before you submit your assignments. You will have one attempt for activities with only 2 possible answers and two attempts for those with 3 or 4 possible answers. If an activity does not follow these guidelines, this will be indicated in the instructions. The final grade of an online activity will be based on the highest score you received on the activity. It is strongly recommended that before you log off, you check to see that your work has been properly recorded. In order to receive full credit, all activities in the week s folder must be completed by the deadline. Please refer to the course calendar for the content for each MSL online assignment folder. 10-day grace period: Late MSL assignments may be submitted until 10 days after the due date, but this will result in a 10-point deduction for each day that they are late. Access to online assignments in MSL: In order to access the MSL online assignments, you will need to register for the online component of your course. To do this, follow the step-by-step instructions given in the file How to fill out the MSL Course Registration Form, located in the Orientation folder in your ANGEL course. During this course-registration process, you first will have to create a Pearson Education Account (if you do not already have one); then, you will need to enter the access code that comes inside the cover of your textbook; and, finally, you will have to enroll into your course using the Course ID. You only have to register once through the Course Registration Form. However, when accessing the weekly MSL online assignments, you will be asked to authenticate, using your Login Name and the Password that you created during the course-registration process. Additionally, prior to completing any MSL online assignment, please make sure to carry out a Browser Tune-Up, which will ensure that your computer has the right browser and plug-ins. Go to and click on Run the tune-up now on the bottom-right corner. If the tune-up indicates that you need to download any software, please do so; this will guarantee optimal and full functionality.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 5 of 22 Access to audio and video files: To access the audio and video files, you will need to have the Flash plug-in installed on your computer (see pg. 1 of this document). You are responsible for checking the course calendar for weekly assignments, and completing and submitting on time all assignments indicated for that week. You must also check for any announcements that may appear in ANGEL on your resources page. The weekly MSL online assignment folders are deactivated 10 days after the deadlines stated on the syllabus. Assignments turned in after the 10-day grace period will not receive credit. Technology failures are not an excuse for unfinished work. Please plan accordingly. We recommend that you do the assignments ahead of time since this has the added benefit of allowing you enough time to contact your instructor to address questions you may have. Making up online assignments without penalization will only be allowed under certain circumstances (see section Make-up exams and assignments ). Course Requirements Please see the Orientation Video of this course to have a general idea how this class works. You can see our video at: Technological Training You are responsible for watching all the technological video tutorials located in the Help section under your Lessons tab. Your instructor will not address questions related to technical problems with online homework. For concerns related to technology use the Help form found on the class s ANGEL page. Administrative assessments First, the Diagnostic Questionnaire must be completed. This questionnaire is simply a way for us to get a better idea of your background with the Spanish language and to determine if you are in the correct level based on your experience. Once this diagnostic questionnaire is completed, a new quiz called Orientation quiz: Quiz over Policies and Syllabus will show up. Once you successfully score a 100% on this second quiz, the Academic Integrity Form will show up. You are required to read and sign the Academic Integrity Form in order to access your weekly assignments. Once you have successfully completed these three activities, your lesson 0.1 will be released. If you do not complete these quizzes, you will be asked to supply a password in order to gain access to the assignments. Online instruction Expected Time Required (approximate): A general guideline for the amount of time you should plan to dedicate to this course is 8-10 hours per week (4 credit course). The online instruction concentrates on the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary, the development of listening, reading, and writing skills, and exposure to Hispanic culture. Each week, you will devote a minimum of 8 hours to complete the following online assignments: Presentations (grammar and vocabulary tutorials) Each week you will begin with the "Presentations" folder. Here you will find video presentations, written explanations, and PowerPoint presentations of the week's material. Review and study the presentations included in the weekly folder.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 6 of 22 Online assignments The MSL online quizzes are graded assignments. Allow a minimum of 6 hours for each weekly folder. Your assignments are: grammar and vocabulary activities, A escuchar listening activity, pronunciation activity, listening comprehension and culture activities, and reading comprehension and culture activities. These quizzes open weekly Monday (12:00 am) and close the following Sunday (11:59 pm). Be aware that some assignments folders may contain several activities. Communication activities (Actividades de comunicación) Each week you will be responsible for contributing to our class Actividad de comunicación (Communication activity). There are three different types of communication activities (Zona cultural, Foro de discusión, and Tertulia), and each week you will complete only the assigned activity. You will complete the activities in rotation; one week you will complete the Zona cultural, the following week you will have the Foro de discusión, and the following week you will do the Tertulia in groups. See the course calendar for each week s activity. All these communication activities are graded assignments. Zona cultural: (2 per week, 50 words: 60 minutes) Twice a week, you will enter the Zona Cultural (Cultural Zone) in ANGEL. You are required to write a 30-word submission on the week s topic. You will look for items from Hispanic culture related to the week s topic for the Zona cultural (see Examples of Communication Activities). Your submission may be any video, news clip, photo, song, etc. from the Hispanic world and related to the week s assigned topic, and you will write a caption for your submission. Your comments must be simple, short, and in Spanish. You may comment on any aspect of your submission using vocabulary and grammar from the current lesson. You must post the total number of words of your first submission at the end of your post (e.g. Word count: 32 ). You must post your first submission between Monday and Friday, by 11:59 pm. After reviewing your classmates posts, you will reply to their posts, to as many or as few as you wish, BUT you must write a total of 50 words for the week. You must post the total number of words used in your response at the end of your post (e.g. Word count: 22 ), AND you must write the total number of words for the week (your submission and your responses to classmates) at the end of your final post (e.g. Total word count for week: 54 ). See the Zona cultural orientation and video explanation and example in the Technology Tutorials folder. You must post your response between Friday and Sunday, by 11:59 pm. Foro de discusión: (2 per week, 50 words: 60 minutes) Twice a week, you will enter the Foro de discusión (Discussion Forum) in ANGEL, where you will write in Spanish to discuss and respond to designated topics related to the week s target content. Each week, a topic will be presented, and you are required to write a 30-word submission on the week s topic (see Examples of Communication Activities). The discussion topics are posted in ANGEL and are available in the instructions section of each Foro de discussion (when it opens). You must post the total number of words of your first submission at the end of your post (e.g. Word count: 32 ). You must post your first submission between Monday and Friday, by 11:59 pm. After reviewing your classmates posts, you will reply to their posts, to as many or as few as you wish, for a total of 20 words. You must post the total number of words of your response at the end of your post (e.g. Word count: 22 ), AND you must write the total number of words for the week (your submission and your responses to classmates) at the end of your final post (e.g. Total word

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 7 of 22 count for the week: 54 ). See the Foro orientation and video and example in the Technology Tutorials folder. You must post your response between Friday and Sunday, by 11:59 pm. After the close of the weekly forum, your instructor will post individual feedback in response to your submissions and also post/send a conclusion for the week. Participation is mandatory, and on-time participation is crucial to establishing a conversational exchange. Grading criteria for Online Discussion Participation (Zona Cultural & Foro de Discusión): Use your own words and do not use online translators to write your submission. The use of translators becomes very obvious for two reasons. First, they DO NOT work; they create very odd sentences, as well as ungrammatical sentences! Secondly, the use of online translators is not allowed in language courses since its use is considered academic dishonesty. Assignments that are totally/partially taken from an external source such as published information (book, web page, etc.) or internal source (discussion fora, tutorials, etc.), produced by a translation program or by another person will receive no credit and will be reported to the College of Liberal Arts and will remain on the student s record. If you find yourself tempted to translate a complex sentence, instead create two or more smaller, simpler sentences (you ll write more words this way!). Your instructor understands this is your first semester learning a foreign language and will be sympathetic to honest attempts to express yourself in Spanish. By focusing only on the structures and terms learned in this course, you will avoid making mistakes in complex structures beyond Spanish 1 and you will perfect the material from the lessons. For reference or to look up a particular word, you may only use non-digital/paper dictionaries and grammar reference materials such as your textbook or a Spanish-English dictionary. Please also see the Evaluation Criteria for writing expression: Grading criteria for Online Discussion Participation (Foro de Discusión & Zona Cultural) Note regarding Foro de discusión and Zona cultural: In order to receive credit you need to write 2 posts (a first submission and a response) by the deadlines. Participation is mandatory, and on-time participation is crucial to establishing a conversational exchange. Assignments turned in after the deadlines (dates and times) will not receive credit. No partial credit is given for just one submission even if that submission is on time. Tertulia: The Tertulia (speaking assignment) will be completed in groups of 3-5 students. You will be responsible for finding your own team (go to Partner Wanted! forum in your Communication Activities section to find your partners.) Once you have your group formed, give it a Spanish name! One of you will need to post that information in the Partner Wanted! forum. Title your post "Final team list for [name of your new team]". Teams must be created in week 3. The Tertulia consists of a 5-minute dialogue recorded with Adobe Connect, an online conferencing program built into the course (see microphone and webcam requirements on page 1.) You must have and use a camera for this assignment; otherwise your assignment will not be graded. Make sure you have the proper light so that your group mates and your instructor can clearly see your face. If your instructor cannot see your face, they have the prerogative of not grading your Tertulia assignment. You do not need to download any program in order to use this program because it is completely web based and can be accessed from anywhere in the world. You do not have to physically be together when you all do this speaking assignment. All you need to do is be "virtually" present in the assigned online meeting room. If your group has fewer than 5 members, you need to speak for at least 1 minute per person. Note: Please wear headphones or ear buds while using Adobe Connect

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 8 of 22 (ALL participants) to avoid feedback, echo, overlapping sound, and noise. It will reduce the amount of sound coming out of your speakers, especially if you are using a built-in microphone. You will speak and interact as a group as you discuss the assigned topic (See Course Calendar to find the topic). Be sure to focus on the verb tenses and vocabulary learned during the week s lesson. You and your group will be responsible for scheduling a day and time to record your conversation by the deadline; your group s private Adobe Connect room will be continuously accessible for practice, but you need to arrange a time and day to meet as a group for the recording. You may use the textbook, a dictionary, and your notes to prepare for the Tertulia assignment, but you will not be allowed to have anything with you during the recording (do not read!). You must submit your recording link to the Tertulia drop-box for the appropriate week by Sunday, 11:59 pm. Grading criteria for speaking assignment (Tertulia): See Grading Criteria for written expression; the same guidelines apply. No online dictionaries or translators are permitted, and the conversation must be original (your own words) and spontaneous. Again, your instructor knows that it is a difficult task to speak in Spanish but trying, speaking as much as possible, and practicing class vocabulary and grammar are essential components of learning Spanish. Making mistakes is natural and to be expected; keep your sentences simple and centered around what we have learned in class. Don t be so afraid of not being perfect that you don t give yourself a chance to speak up! Please also see the Evaluation Criteria for speaking assignments: Grading criteria for speaking assignments (Tertulia) Number of communication activities: Zona cultural: a total of 3 (week 3, week 7, week 10) Foro de discusión: a total of 3 (week 4, week 8, week 12) Tertulia: a total of 3 (week 5, week 9, week 13) Note on Academic Integrity: For all your Spanish assignments, you MAY consult with your instructor in preparation for graded work and only use paper dictionaries and your textbook when writing or when planning for an activity. You MAY NOT use an online dictionary or an online translator to translate chunks of text (words, sentences, paragraphs) from English to Spanish, or vice versa. This applies both to your own prose in English and to prose in English that you take from a print or online source. Also, you MAY NOT ask another person (e.g., friend, tutor, relative) for help with the writing of any activity on which you will be graded and for which you receive points towards your final grade. If you plan to talk with another person about the grammar content you will be using in your written work, you must receive advance, explicit approval from your instructor. What you write must be produced by you, not written, corrected, or edited by someone else. In addition, assignments that are totally/partially taken from an external source such as published information (book, web page, etc.) or internal source (discussion fora, tutorials, etc.), or produced by a translation program or by another person will receive no credit and will be reported to the College of the Liberal Arts and will remain on the student s record. Please note: dictionary use consists of a resource where you look up or enter in ONE word. Translation use consists of anything where you enter in MORE than one word at a time.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 9 of 22 Please be aware that no late work will be allowed (unless previously approved). Absolutely no late homework will be accepted without the instructor's written permission. Course Template: Here is the template for this course. Every week you will review PowerPoints and content grammar and vocabulary tutorials, complete quizzes, and complete an Actividad de comunicación activity. Note that each week you will complete Zona cultural OR Foro de discusión OR Tertulia. See the course calendar for the weekly assignments; these assignments rotate every week. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Presentations (in ANGEL) & Quizzes (in MSL) Zona cultural: Submission (in ANGEL) Foro de discusión: Submission (in ANGEL) Tertulia (in ANGEL and Adobe Connect Pro) Zona cultural: Response posts (in ANGEL) Foro de discusión: Response posts (in ANGEL) Exams There will be three closed-book exams in this course. Please note that exams and course grades are not curved or rounded. You must bring your Penn State ID and your own headphones to these exams. Computers in some testing centers do not have speakers, and there are no headphones for you to borrow. You may take the exam without hearing the script, but you will still have to answer the questions in the listening section. During your exam, you are only allowed to have your Penn State ID, headphones, and a pencil/pen. If you are provided with a piece of scrap paper to use during the exam, please remember to RETURN this scrap paper when finishing the exam. Failure to do so will result in an F for your final course grade. It is also your responsibility to notify the staff person at your Testing Center check-in desk immediately of any technical or medical issues. Re-taking exams after you have left the Testing Center will not be allowed under any circumstances. Exams 1 and 2: These exams will include listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and a short essay (50 words). These exams are not cumulative. You will have 90 minutes to complete your exam. Exam 3: This exam includes cumulative grammar and vocabulary from previous chapters, and new grammar and new vocabulary since the second exam. This 90-minute exam will include listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, reading, and a short essay (50 words). You will need to secure a proctor in order to take exams in this course. (Check this web page: A proctor will not automatically be assigned to you; rather, you must make the necessary contacts to secure a professional who will serve in this capacity.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 10 of 22 Contact a person who meets the qualifications and ask him or her to proctor your exam. Relatives and friends are not suitable proctors. Student Services must approve your proctor before any exams can be taken. Please see instructions for securing a suitable proctor. While many proctors will serve on a voluntary basis, you are responsible for paying any expenses incurred in retaining a proctor. You must submit your proctor for approval or schedule your exams at a testing center using our online proctored exam portal. You will need to enter your proctor's contact information and submit proctor verification documentation. Please, note that if your proctor has been previously approved by the World Campus during a prior course within two years, you do not need to obtain verification. World Campus retains proctor information on file for two years. If your proctor does not meet the required specifications, Student Services will notify you within 5 to 7 business days. Contact Student Services if you cannot take a scheduled exam. Unless you have received permission to take your exam at an alternative time, your proctor will only allow you to take the exam during dates specified in your course. Please contact SES (Student Enrollment Services) at or (option #1) if you encounter any issues. SES will send your proctor the exam information (instructions and password for your exam). Once you have your proctor assigned, your proctor must verify that their computer can play mp3 audio files. They should test the audio at the following link: Tutoring: If you need help with Spanish, you can take advantage of Tutor.com, a 24/7 tutoring service that provides you with assistance in coursework and test preparation. The tutors are Spanish-matter experts, and you will have personalized one-on-one sessions with them. You can schedule your own tutoring appointments to engage in interactive sessions that include a whiteboard and chat feature. The service can be utilized on any device that has Internet access. You are encouraged to use the service throughout the semester. Top of the Document

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 19 of 22 Evaluation Criteria Grades are based on different Evaluation Criteria depending on the assignment: Grading criteria for Online Discussion Participation (Foro de Discusión & Zona Cultural) Grading criteria for speaking assignments (Tertulia) You may contact your instructor during office hours to review your grades. Should there be any disagreement, you should resolve it immediately with your instructor. No excuses will be accepted to recover points lost because of failure to submit work. If you provide written documentation about your absence(s) and your instructor considers it acceptable, a solution will be provided. Make-up exams and assignments Active and consistent participation is vital in learning a second language. Approved excuses include one of the following situations: Officially documented university or military-sponsored curricular and extracurricular activities. Student athletes, band members, and members of other university organizations should send an original letter from their supervisor of their specific department to the instructor at least one week ahead of time indicating the dates you will miss assignments. Religious observances. You must let your instructor know about your intended absence one week in advance. Family emergencies, accidents. If you must miss assignments due to an emergency, such as the death of a direct family member, an accident, or other circumstance beyond your control that requires missing assignments, you must contact your instructor as soon as possible. A documented, significant, prolonged illness (See Policy for Verification of Illness below). your instructor about your situation as soon as possible. You must present original medical documents to your instructor. Policy for Verification of Illness: A routine illness is a minor illness or injury, such as a cold, the flu, or a self-limited gastrointestinal disorder. For routine illness-related absences, students should correspond directly with the faculty as soon as possible regarding the situation, ideally BEFORE they miss an evaluative assignment. A significant, prolonged illness is a serious illness or injury lasting at least a week. Medical documentation is required. If you miss an evaluative assignment due to a routine illness, you should make it up within the following week. Otherwise your illness is considered prolonged and you will have to provide medical documentation for you to be allowed to make up the evaluative assignment (Policy 49-20). General Administrative Issues Expected Time Required (approximate): A general guideline for the amount of time you should plan to dedicate to this course is 8-10 hours per week (4-credit course). Extra Credit: No extra credit will be given under any circumstances.

Spanish 1 World Campus Page 20 of 22 Academic Integrity: Penn State defines academic integrity as the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner. All students should act with personal integrity, respect other students dignity, rights and property, and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts (Faculty Senate Policy 49-20). Dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated in this course. Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarizing, using online translators, fabricating information or citations, facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by others, having unauthorized possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students. The use of an online translator is forbidden in this language class. Online translators are considered a form of academic dishonesty and if you use one in this course an Academic Integrity Form will be reported to the College of Liberal Arts. Students who are found to be dishonest will receive academic sanctions and will be reported to the University s Judicial Affairs office for possible further disciplinary sanction. Questions about academic integrity can be referred to Holly Beaver, hbeaver@psu.edu. Disagreements and grade disputes: If you disagree with a grade or have problems with your instructor, please contact your instructor first and try to resolve the disagreement together. If it cannot be resolved, contact the Assistant Director of the program, Adriana Linnebur at (ail3@psu.edu). She will ask you for written documentation of your version of the dispute before meeting with you. Please understand that supervisors, coordinators, department heads, and higher administrators cannot require an instructor to change a grade, but can only serve as mediators. University Policy on Disabilities: Penn State welcomes students with disabilities into the University's educational programs. If you have a disability-related need for reasonable academic adjustments, contact the Student Disability Resources at For further information, please visit the Student Disability Resources website at In order to receive consideration for course accommodations, you must contact this office and provide documentation. If the documentation supports the need for academic adjustments, the Student Disability Resources will provide a letter identifying appropriate academic adjustments. Please share this letter and discuss the adjustments with your instructor as early in the course as possible. Late drop: It is your responsibility to drop the course if you decide to no longer be enrolled. For important dates as the drop-add period, the filing period for conflict final exams, late drop, withdrawing from a course or from the university, please see the University calendar for the semester at: For further information on PSU s policies on adding and dropping courses, withdrawal from the university, and procedures to do so, click on Undergraduate Advising Handbook: Deferred Grades: If you want to request a deferred grade, contact your instructor by week 14. If a deferred grade is approved, you will need to go to the dean of your college, process the deferred grade paperwork, and ask your instructor to sign. You will have to complete all the work for the course within 10 weeks after the course end date. Deferred grades are not recommended unless you have completed at least 75% of the course material.
