1 SFUSD Chemistry Scope & Sequence Grade 10
2 Our Storyline In the fall, students will begin with stars, seeing the formation of the first element, and its transformation to heavier elements. They will explore the structure of the atom and patterns on the periodic table. They will analyze the forces that hold elements together and consider how society uses this understanding to develop materials useful to society, before delving into how substances interact with each other. In the spring, students will begin by surveying Earth s climate and the impact of humans. They will then use their understanding of elements and materials science to investigate energy concepts and the factors that drive chemical and physical changes. They will later explore greenhouse gases, their effect on the atmosphere and subsequently how the atmosphere affects the ocean and other bodies of water on Earth. To culminate the spring semester s learnings, students will develop and evaluate possible solutions to global environmental concerns.
