1 Page Notre Dame Church 359 Central Avenue North Caldwell New Jersey Corporal Works of Mercy Do you remember them? I had to learn them when I was a child in catholic school. Clothe the naked, feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, etc. Pope Francis himself has declared a Jubilee Year for Mercy beginning in December of this year, so I am sure we will be hearing more about these works of mercy in the months ahead. The corporal works of mercy come from Matthew s Gospel. Jesus talks about his return when he will divide the population into sheep and goats. The sheep, who have practiced charitable deeds for those in need, will be ushered into the kingdom of heaven. Those who neglected these tasks, the goats, will be ushered down to the other place! The point is clear: disciples are not just people of prayer, they are people who serve the earthly needs of others. So what brings all of this to mind? In the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of witnessing many of these corporal works of mercy being ministered by the people of our parish. For two weeks the homeless were sheltered here as part of our participation in the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Parishioners like Donna Zaros and others, in conjunction with members of Temple Sholom, extended hospitality to homeless families right in our parish center. Visiting the sick is an all important part of parish ministry. Parishioners like Barbara Scheid regularly visit nursing homes, hospitals and the homebound to bring them communion. These pastoral visits not only nourish the sick with the Eucharist but they bring the love and concern of the parish community. One ministry that is often neglected is visiting those in prison, but not here at Notre Dame. The Kenosis ministry, an interfaith group, visits local prisons on a regular basis. Our own Michael Di Chiara is a leading member of the group. Just recently 11 members of Kenosis spent a long weekend at the Northern State Prison in Newark bringing prayer and hope to 30 prisoners. Considering our very salvation may depend on our treatment of those most in need, it is good that we have these specialized ministries in our parish. As you can imagine, these and other ministries at Notre Dame are always looking for extra help. On the weekend of October 18, 2015, our parish will be having a ministry fair. This is a great opportunity for parishioners to get more involved in the life of our parish. Watch for more details about the ministry fair. Until then, prayerfully consider where God may be calling you to serve as a disciples of Christ. Fr. Tom Parish Office ndparishnc@verizon.net Religious Education/Youth Ministry /fax: web page:
