1 Page Notre Dame Church 359 Central Avenue North Caldwell New Jersey Enough, O Lord! Did you ever have one of those weeks where everything went wrong and you questioned the goodness of God? Apparently, you are not alone! The first reading for this Sunday is a wonderful snapshot from the life of the prophet Elijah. Despite being a great prophet, he had his bad days, but even though he was frustrated enough to give up on God, God never gave up on him. The setting for the story is that Elijah is on the run from other false prophets who want to kill him. Elijah has done nothing wrong. He has simply been true to the commands of God and has tried to reform the people. Do you know that feeling for being punished or persecuted for doing the right thing? Elijah sits down under a broom tree, and he prays, simply saying, This is enough O Lord! Take my life for I am no better than my fathers. Elijah cannot take it anymore. He is at the end of his rope and wants God to take him home so he can rest. God will hear none of it and instead sends an angel to nudge him and feed him bread and water to continue his journey. After he eats Elijah lies down again, so God sends an angel to awaken him. The angel says: Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you! This image of God is twofold: it is compassionate and loving because he feeds hungry Elijah in the wilderness. But it is also challenging because he will not allow Elijah to just give up. He forces him forward because God knows that Elijah has more work to accomplish. This story is obviously connected to the Gospel where Jesus continues his bread of life discourse, but it also stands on its own as a reminder to us that even in our darkest moments, God is still with us. In fact, when we most want to give up, God is closest to us, nudging us forward, commanding us to Get up and eat (the Bread of Life), else the journey will be too long for you. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts. Because the Solemnity occurs on a Saturday this year, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
