Name Description Active Coordinator 1. Bright The Bright Red Bookshelf Diane Red program re-circulates gently Dailey Bookshelf used children s books back into the community where they are made available free for families to own. 2. Bethany House 3. St. Joseph's House of Hospitality On the second Wednesday of every month the St. Mary s Community brings dinner to share with the house. Parishioners each bring a dish to pass. After an evening prayer service we enjoy a meal with the residents and staff of Bethany House. We also collect clothes and food for Bethany house and deliver the collection on the 4th Sunday of the month. Three Saturdays a year a group of St. Mary s Parishioners cook brunch for the guests at St. Joseph House. In addition, parishioners can participate in Bread for All, a Community Supported Bakery sponsored by St. Joseph s that offers fresh-baked, organic bread to subscribers in Rochester. Sandy Behnke Bill Vols $ Issues Opportunities 4 $180 for labels While the ministry receives requests for additional book shelves, it seems unlikely to have enough inventory to stock these.? None New leadership has re-energized ministry and there appear to be sufficient volunteers to continue on. Also scheduling of presiders has been improved each event with mast er list of 50 $300 per event. Paid from Tithing Fund Ministry has reenergized with new volunteers The need is great and increasing. More books can be channeled through the program to young readers and their parents. Bethany House has a new permanent home and St. Mary s has a long tradition of involvement. 1

4. Tithing Committee 5. Vocational Institute for the Children of Sudan Each week 10% of collection is put in tithing fund. This money is used to support ministries and programs other than those directly sponsored by the parish. A committee meets quarterly to review requests and award grants. There is a set of programs and agencies that receive support each quarter: A-Meal & More, Bethany House, Blessed Sacrament Supper Program, House of Mercy, Mercy Outreach Center, Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN), Southeast Ecumenical Ministries, St. Andrews Food Cupboard, St. Joseph s House of Hospitability, St. Joseph Neighborhood Center, St. Martin s Place, St. Peter s Kitchen, and SWEM Community Services, Inc. Kuc Majak, a parishioner of St. Mary s for the past ten years, is a native of South Sudan. He has been an educator all his life with both undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 2009 he decided that he needed to work toward reestablishing an Bill (temp) Kuc Majak 6 Ten percent of collection is about $40,000 annually 5 None although gifts are made to SMC and then passed on to the Financial pressures on the parish have made it difficult to maintain the tithing fund without eliminating or reducing pastoral staff. Visibility of the project suffers from parishes challenges in area of communications. Reassessment of programs and activities supported seems timely. Once people know about project, there is a positive response. Partnership with existing organizations are being actively pursued. This will be the parish s Advent giving project. 2

6. St. Mary's Door educational system in his home area of Aweil- Northern Bhar El Ghazal State. This region was devastated by the Sudanese civil war which was finally resolved with popular elections creating a separate democratic republic of South Sudan. This was St. Mary s Lenten project for 2012 and fund raising continues both within and outside the parish. In the past, the staff at St. Mary s answers several calls a day for food and assistance from the needy in the downtown area. On Monday mornings the staff is available to meet with people who are facing eviction or having their RG&E shut off. We need to make a plan and look at different resources and options to help meet their needs. 501c(3) organizatio n.???? Not clear if current staff can or desires to continue this ministry. Resources might be better spent in other, more systemic initiatives. The door could reenforced existing help by becoming more of an information and referral ministry. 3

7. Alternative Christmas Fair Our annual Christmas sale offers alternative fair trade gifts are available to purchase. Through the fair we have supported St. Michael s Woodshop, Woman s Coffee Connection, Healthy Sisters Soup and Bean Works, Beads for Life, and Catholic Relief Services Work of Human Hands. Sue Alvut, Kris Mich, Marilyn Seitz- 12 Not known but nothing more than office supplies and coffee and food. Volunteer leadership has been identified for this year. 8. Alternative Christmas Giving 9. Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN) We collect gifts at all of the masses in December to be distributed to local agencies. This year over $10,000 in gifts were donated to the following agencies: St. Joseph Neighborhood Center, St. Joseph House of Hospitality, Mercy Residential Services, St. Martin s Place, Birthright, Catholic Family Center, Eastern Service Workers, La Casa, and Bethany House. RAIHN is a partnership among several Rochester area faith communities to provide temporary housing for homeless. We partner with First Universalist Church, located across the park from St. Mary s, to provide housing, meals and support to homeless families in the Rochester area. Families Rosemar ie Horvath Rosemai re Horvath? Little Volunteer leadership has been identified for this year. 12? None In general, it gets harder and harder to recruit volunteers even though we partner with First Universalist. Major education effort along with training needed 4

10. Adult Education 11. Coffee Connection 12. Prayer Shawl Ministry are housed at First Universalist and St. Mary s parishioners join with their members to provide support, fellowship, and breakfast and dinner. We provide several on-site opportunities for our parishioners to learn more about local and world peace and justice issues. Several times throughout the year we offer programs such as JustMatters, Fair Trade education, book discussions, presentations by local social service agencies and films about global issues. The next social ministry adult education program is JustMatters program focusing on immigration. Fair trade coffee provided within an organizational context that employs women and soon men who are in re-entry. Representatives sell coffee on the porch every third Sunday after Mass. Parishioners make prayer shawls for those who are struggling with any kind of physical or other life challenge. Bill (temp) Joan Smith Any Voekl? Various with program but basically coffee and food at meetings. sever al None None to keep up numbers. In the past programs have had little draw with only the same few people showing up. In the past we did not have a member of the parish with responsibility for liaison with Coffee Connection. We do now. This is a vital and active ministry. JustMatters on Immigration underway with eight participants: four from St. Mary s and four from Blessed Sacrament. Opportunities for partnering with this job creating non-profit enterprise. 5

13. School Partnership 14. Homeless Run These are blessed at a Sunday Eucharist and are available to any parishioner for anyone they think is in need. St. Mary s partners with RCSD. Schools # 28 and #44. Below is a list of what we do: Tutor children in Grades K-6 Help with special projects Hat, boot and mitten collection, school supplies, hygiene supplies Assist with field trips Collect new or gently used books for pre-school through 6th grade Faculty/Staff appreciation Plants at beginning of year Special treat three times a year Help to celebrate children s birthdays with a cake each month Staff and volunteers from St. Mary s go out during inclement winter weather to offer assistance and shelter to homeless people. This is done in the company of staff from Human Services and the Rochester Police. Marilyn DeLucia? None currently 15 tutors plus com mitte e Raised $1900 last year? $ per month for Tops cards, transportati on, motel room, and bagged dinners Reorganization in RCSD poses challenges. This was a personal ministry of the previous pastoral administrator and few others were involved or are informed. Stable core group of volunteers provides leadership and recruitment of new members especially tutors. This ministry can be reinstated if there is sufficient interest. Police and Human Services staff are very desirous of continuation. There has been some commitments made to St. Joseph s House as well. 6

Possible Future Paths (Not meant to be mutually exclusive) 1. Formation of Social Ministry Committee for St. Mary s that would pray and think together about the current and future needs for social ministry. 2. Formation of a Social Ministry Committee for the three partner parishes, a single group that would pray and think together about the current and future needs for social ministry in the wider area and set of concerns covered by the three. 3. Establish partnership with St. Francis Xavier Cabrini parish so St. Mary s can enter more directly into the life of those struggling in the city and experience their life and faith. 4. Establish membership in ACTS (Alliance of Communities Transforming Society), community organizing effort in Rochester. 5. Become more active in specific social ministry and social justice initiatives: local, national, and international. 6. Our current activities are predominantly social ministry works of mercy; there is little if any social justice, i.e., action to address systemic issues of justice. Given the character of St. Mary s membership, an emphasis on advocacy may be an important contribution that St. Mary s can make in addition to direct works of mercy and care. 7. There are many opportunities to develop a stronger sense of solidarity with marginalized in our community, nation, and the world. 8. We have no programs or initiatives reflecting our stewardship of the natural environment. 9. Opportunity through work of Youth Ministry to connect to Migrant ministry in Marion NY. 7
