2 Backgroud We humans depend utterly on the ecosystems and systemic processes of the natural environment for our survival. Our cities are still destroying Earth s natural habitat, instead of fostering it. Even in the most advanced countries the eco-footprint of urban citizens is still growing. Urban society is rapidly increasing and by the end of the century 80% of humans will live in cities. We create ever larger urban densities and countless artificial surfaces in cities, whereas the life-supporting, ecological, productive landscapes are continuously reduced. Ecological processes and systemic relationships in the remaining pieces of vegetation and animal habitats are mostly disturbed and extinguished by our behavior. In addition, humans are unaccustomed to nature and are often afraid even of a bird or spider.

4 Real Nature Discovery We regard this place as real nature in the city,since we can see a lot of plants,all kinds of vegetation,herb,trees,and so forth,they can grow with others homoniously.it is full of ennergy and vitality.

5 Real Nature in urban Biodiversity Biodiversity is the degree of variation of life.this can refer to genetic variation, species variation, or ecosystem variation within an area, biome, or planet. Stability Ecological stability can refer to types of stability in a continuum ranging from resilience (returning quickly to a previous state) to constancy to persistence. Less human intervention This means little even no human beings activity or any artificial produce. Spontaneous growth Plants and others can grow by themselves,and the can exsit in a better environment.

6 Problems in the city What is run-off? Rainfall not going into the soil.water from rain, snowmelt or irrigation that flows over the land surface and is not absorbed into the ground, instead flowing (in pipes or on the surface) into streams or other surface waters or land depressions. Caused by run-off It is fast, hot and dirty. Creates a lot of sustainability problems. So: We should maximize surfaces that provide natural processes

7 Ecological Processes Discovery Whole Ecological Process WATER CYCLE The water cycle, also known as the hydrologic cycle or the H2O cycle, describes the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. The mass of water on Earth remains fairly constant over time but the partitioning of the water into the major reservoirs of ice, fresh water, saline water and atmospheric water is variable depending on a wide range of climatic variables. The water moves from one reservoir to another, such as from river to ocean, or from the ocean to the atmosphere, by the physical processes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, runoff, and subsurface flow. In so doing, the water goes through different phases: liquid, solid (ice), and gas (vapor). Focused Ecological Process PERCOLATION The process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil. Infiltration rate in soil science is a measure of the rate at which soil is able to absorb rainfall or irrigation. It is measured in inches per hour or millimeters per hour. The rate decreases as the soil becomes saturated. If the precipitation rate exceeds the infiltration rate, runoff will usually occur unless there is some physical barrier. It is related to the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the near-surface soil. The rate of infiltration can be measured using an infiltrometer.
