As Petroleum products play an important role in the development of any country and it necessary that all the major players in the sector should come together and exchange ideas which help in the providing better technology and products. We are obliged that Iran is playing an important role in this expo by becoming the partner country, this initiative by Iran is another step towards India-Iran friendship. 8 PLASTICS Plastics consumption in India is growing over 16% a year, whereas growth in China is 10% and UK is 2.5%. Per capita consumption of India is 11 kg against the world average of 28 kg. In countries like USA, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the consumption is more than 100 kg and in China it is at 38 kg. It is expected that India s per capita consumption will cross 20 kg by Growth in Automotive, Infrastructure, Packaging, Agriculture, Electronics, Healthcare, Housing and Construction, Textiles and FMCG are driving growth in plastics. Rural income is expected to triple by 2020 to a total of US $1.8 trillion. Annual car production is projected to touch 9.3 million vehicles per year by The government plans to spend US$1trillion in infrastructure building by India s Manufacturing Sector is likely to be world s 7th largest by 2025 from the current 12th position. The plastic recycling industry in India is one of the highest among its peers at 47%. Plastics industry is expecting a shot in the arm from the Swachha Bharat programme. Under the programme, it will require constructing individual, cluster and community toilets, introduce solid and liquid waste management in villages and laying water pipelines to connect all villages. Plastic producers estimate that the program could add 250,000 m.t./year of demand to polymers if the programme would have to achieve 50% of the set target. Plastic consumption in India has a regional diversity, with Western India accounting for 47%, Northern India for 23% and Southern India for 21%. Bulk of the consumption in Northern India is from end-use industries like auto, packaging, plasticulture applications, electronic appliances etc., which are concentrated mostly in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi- NCR (>50%). ENGINEERING PLASTICS Engineering plastics have replaced traditional engineering materials. It is yet to be tapped fully in India, and as such, has a substantial growth potential. Globally, it is growing on account of increasing applications, technological advancements, and rapidly growing demand in the Asia-Pacific region. Automotive and transportation registers fastest-growing application for engineering plastics. Globally, Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) has the largest market share. ABS is the second largest engineering plastic segment in India. The global demand for ABS and SAN resin is about 18 million tonnes. The market size for engineering plastics is projected to reach $97.2 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 7.6%. In India, the segment has been primarily dominated by the Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) thermoplastic resin. And is likely to sustain its dominance during the period FY2015 ( ) to FY2019. 9 PVC & COMPOUNDS Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) commonly known as infrastructure plastic has seen sizeable demand growth in the last several years. PVC industry in India is valued at over Rs 20,000 crores with five major producers and over 6,000 processors, and making consumer and industrial products. The forecasts for PVC industry are bright. The global market, currently at $ 56 billion, is expected to reach a revenue of $65 billion in 2019, with average annual demand expected to increase at 3.9 per cent. The global consumption of PVC in 2014 was estimated at 40 million tonnes. The major reasons for growth in this segment is increase in demand for pipes in irrigation (rural water management), oil and gas and from the real estate industry (green building concept). Irrigation and water pipes contributes to 70% of the PVC market. Planning Commission has projected an investment of $1 trillion in the 12th Five-Year Plan ( ). PVC pipes and fittings market has grown at a CAGR of 13.4% during the period FY2010-FY2015. Production capacity of PVC pipes and fittings grew at a CAGR of 30.1% during FY2009-FY2014. Projection for growth during FY2014-FY2019 is at a CAGR of 32.1%. It is expected to touch Rs 327 billion by FY2020. Global demand for polymers has reached about 218 MMTPA and the share of PVC in total polymer consumption is about 17-18%. India s domestic polymer industry is dominated by Polyolefins (PE & PP), consisting of about 73%. Global thermoplastic composites market is expected to reach US$9.9 billion in 2020 at a CAGR of 6.5% ( ). Asia-Pacific is expected to register the highest growth rate in the next five years, and China will drive Asia-Pacific s market. Transportation and aerospace and defense industry is expected to drive the thermoplastic composites market. Global ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) market was valued at US$ 7.29 billion in 2014 and is anticipated to reach US$11.41 billion by
10 PETROCHEMICALS According to a recent industry report, Indian petrochemicals industry is estimated to be $100 bn by Currently at around $40 bn, the petrochemicals segment in the country is growing at a CAGR of around 14%. Petrochemicals currently contribute to about 30% of country s $120 bn chemical industry, which is likely to grow at a CAGR of 11% in next few years to touch $250 bn by India has a vibrant Petrochemical Sector with a petroleum-refining capacity of over 215 MTPA and gas cracker complexes with downstream facility producing plastics and polymers. Demand in the last 5 years has been led by growth in polymers, fiber intermediates, synthetic fiber and elastomers. India continues to be a net importer of olefins as domestic capacity is low and presents a lucrative opportunity for overseas players for expansion. India has sufficient capacities for ethylene and propylene, and styrene continues to face deficit. Ethylene capacity grew due to the new capacity by GAIL, HPCL and the commissioning of IOC complex at Panipat. PACKAGING According to a report by an Industry body, it is estimated that the packaging industry in India will grow at 18%. It will reach $73 billion in 2020 from $32 billion in FY15. Indian packaging industry constitutes only 4% of the global Industry. The per capita packaging consumption is as low as 4.3 kg as against 42 kg in Germany and 19 kg in Taiwan. Boom in the organised retail and e-commerce offers huge potential for growth for the Packaging Sector. India consumes 12.8 MMT of plastics as against global consumption of 285 MMT per year, growing at 13% CAGR. It is expected that an investment of $10 billion will be made for capacity addition during the next 5 years. A demand growth is also visible in flexible, rigid and metallic food packaging that account for around 55% of the food packaging materials market. 10
