1 JOB POSTING POSTING DATE: March 20, 2015 CLOSING DATE: April 10, 2015 POSITION: REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Executive Director Reports to the Board of Directors STRUCTURE AND SCOPE: Canada Snowboard (CS), the national governing body for competitive snowboarding in Canada, is seeking a full- time Executive Director. The Executive Director is the executive manager of CS overseeing the organization's programs and operations in all areas. Canada Snowboard is looking for an effective leader and team player with excellent management, planning, organizational and interpersonal skills. This position requires the ability to work with a highly diverse, motivated and results- driven group who are responsible for the management, development and promotion of the sport of competitive snowboarding in Canada. Initiative, teamwork and the capacity to achieve objectives are paramount. The Executive Director will supervise and evaluate all staff, collaborate with the organization s executive committee, its other working committees and maintain strong relations with external agencies such as Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Snowsports Association, the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and the Fédération Internationale de Ski. The Executive Director would ideally be located in Vancouver, BC, but alternative locations will be considered. The successful candidate will have: An executive level experience in directing and managing a competitive sport or similar organization with many varied stakeholders; A strong proven financial management expertise including supervision of internal controls, budgeting and financial reporting; A demonstrated ability to lead and manage staff; Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree or equivalent work experience.

3 1.0 DESCRIPTION 1.1 ORGANIZATION: Canada Snowboard 1.2 TITLE: Executive Director 1.3 IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Chair of the Board of Directors 1.4 JOB CATEGORY & NATURE OF POSITION: The Executive Director is the executive manager of Canada Snowboard and has overall responsibility for the leadership, administration, financial management, communication, planning, development and program direction provided to its National office for all administrative and technical components. 1.5 ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY: The Executive Director reports to the Executive Committee through the Chair of the Board of Directors of Canada Snowboard. 2.0 GOAL AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 2.1 GOALS: The responsibility of this position is to provide leadership and guidance to the employees of Canada Snowboard, and to develop, implement and monitor effective planning and management for both administrative and technical components in order to execute Canada Snowboard's Strategic Plan. The Executive Director is responsible for the operations of Canada Snowboard and is expected to drive the Strategic Plan and initiate new structure, programs, and guidelines for improvement of Canada Snowboard operations as required. The Executive Director is expected to provide guidance and leadership in all program areas; staff support, policy development / implementation. 2.2 GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Executive Director, with the guidance from the Board of Directors, shall provide leadership and direction to the daily activities of Canada Snowboard as well as executing the Long Term Strategic Plan of the organization. The Executive Director shall manage the professional affairs of Canada Snowboard in a manner that it is consistent with the Organization s Strategic Plan s values, and supports the achievement of its stated goals.

4 The Executive Director will work closely with the Executive Committee in the pursuit of operational objectives. The Executive Director will execute and carry out instructions provided by the board on material operational and/or strategic tasks on a timely basis. They will keep the Executive Committee informed of significant issues affecting the development and delivery of programs and services. This individual will also be responsible for directing all staff in their duties and ensuring that an appropriate accountability structure and systems are in place KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS: A. Board Policy and Decision Making: 1. Acts as a resource to the Board of Directors so that policy decisions are made on an informed basis; 2. Gather, interpret and articulate information to the Board of Directors about trends and resources as they relate to enhancing their capacity for effective communication, decision making and long term planning; 3. Work with the respective committees and oversee development and implementation of orientation for incoming Board Members; 4. Provide guidance and advice to the Board of Directors on process issues such as establishing and interpreting terms of reference, decision making and accountability; 5. Will participate on committees that the Board of Directors might elect from time to time; 6. Attend and participate in meetings, assisting with materials and ensuring minutes are taken for distribution. B. Operations: 1. Develop an implementation plan in accordance with the strategic plan of the Organization and help the board into fixing future development goals; 2. Ensure appropriate staffing consistent with the organizational structure, maintaining an effective and efficient management of Canada Snowboard, in respect of its budget capacity; 3. Develop and implement policies approved by the Board of Directors; 4. Develop and maintain a personnel policy and procedures manual appropriate to manage and control affairs in an efficient and effective manner; 5. Liaise with external agencies and government on funded programs and projects; 6. Manage the National Office operations and employees including: a. Recruitment, selection, orientation and training of employees; b. Developing and maintaining job descriptions for all employees;

5 c. Developing and implementing an annual performance appraisal system to all Canada Snowboard employees; d. Ensuring all employees are compensated appropriately; e. Obtaining approval from the Board of Directors regarding the annual operational plan. f. Informing the board of directors on staffing changes including hiring, termination and salary adjustments. g. Submitting to the Board of Directors key staff annual appraisal for review and approval. 7. Initiate and support programs or operations to encourage personal and professional development of staff; 8. Manage the affairs of the Board of Directors while providing administrative support; 9. Provide assistance and support to Board Committees and working groups as required; 10. In accordance with Canada Snowboard s signature authority matrix, negotiate contracts on behalf of the Organization; 11. Manage any automated systems in a way to ensure efficiency and recommend upgrades and changes to stay abreast of technological developments. C. Financial Management: 1. Be accountable for the financial operations of the Organization; 2. Work closely with the Executive Committee on preparing the Organization s annual budget, annual capital expenditure budget and annual investments budget; 3. Be accountable to the budget approved by the Board of Directors and stated financial plan; 4. Manage cash flow and cash excess of the Organization in accordance with the Executive Committee policy; 5. Liaise with the auditor of the Organization or any funder auditors, discuss any audit problems arising and ensure a smooth audit process; 6. Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial information; 7. Oversee the maintenance of adequate financial and accounting controls and systems; 8. Supervise the Finance Manager.

6 D. High Performance Program: 1. Provide oversight to the High Performance Program by supervising the High Performance Program Director and other high performance program management staff; 2. Work closely with the High Performance Program Director in setting and monitoring the High Performance plans and objectives; 3. Support the High Performance Director into reporting to stakeholders and funding submissions; 4. Submit to the Board of Directors High Performance selection criteria documents for approval.

7 E. Sport Development Program: 1. Provide oversight to the Sport Development Program by supervising the Sport Development Director and other sport development management staff; 2. Work closely with the Sport Development Director in setting and monitoring the Sport Development plans and objectives; 3. Support the Sport Development Director with reporting and funding submissions. F. Communication: 1. Establish and maintain an efficient communication network, with the National Office as a central information source; 2. Represent and speak on behalf of Canada Snowboard in accordance with established policies; 3. Promote and coordinate relationships with Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Olympic Committee, Canadian Paralympic Committee, the Canadian Snowsports Association, the Fédération Internationale de Ski, The Provincial and Territorial Associations, and other such external agencies; 4. Ensure that all Canada Snowboard communication systems are operating efficiently and providing information to the membership or related agencies; 5. Assist in development and implementation of a Canada Snowboard public relations and communications strategy; 6. Ensure to provide official communications in both English and French. 7. Supervise the Communication management staff. G. Planning: 1. Assist the Board of Directors in the preparation and development of the upcoming year s Strategic Planning of the Organization; 2. Manage the Strategic Plan by implementing, evaluating and monitoring actions identified in the Strategic Plan; 3. Assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of all technical, administrative and domestic program plans of Canada Snowboard; 4. Facilitate and coordinate annual planning review and consideration of new initiatives.

8 H. Marketing and Promotion: 1. Direct and oversee the Organization s marketing and promotion initiatives by managing and consulting contractors and internal staff; 2. Oversee the development and its implementation of a comprehensive marketing and promotion plan; 3. Provide liaison with corporate sponsors and funding agencies; 4. Provide oversight for fund- raising operations and development of promotional materials; 5. Direct media- promotional programs; 6. Maintain liaison and service to sponsors and corporate supporters; 7. Oversee and support the implementation of a strong program of communication using the most current social media platforms. I. Event Management: 1. Direct and oversee the successful management of major events staged directly or indirectly by the Organization; 2. Develop and implement a successful Canadian international events hosting plan. J. Membership and Provincial/Territorial Relations: 1. Communicate regularly with senior representatives of provincial and territorial affiliates to ensure appropriate information exchange and that issues of mutual concern are addressed; 2. Support the provincial and territorial affiliates administratively as necessary to help them to improve their operational capacities; 3. Assist the provincial and territorial affiliates with their athlete development capacity and help them to align their athlete development program with Canada Snowboard s HP Plan; 4. Oversee the management of the membership insurance program and negotiate changes as and when required; 5. Oversee the management of the membership registration system and upgrade as and when required.

9 3.0 LEVEL OF AUTHORITY: 3.1 DEGREES OF SUPERVISION: As the only employee of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will work closely with the Board in the development and initiation of operations or programs and is expected to undertake actions or decisions as appropriate. The Executive Director is responsible for the day- to- day supervision and executive management of the organization. Reporting directly to the Chair, the Executive Director is expected to liaise closely with the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors in the implementation of programs and operational requirements.
