1 SHANGHAI IN THE RED Shanghai is the gateway to the west. It is a cosmopolitan paradise on steroids, steaming ahead to become one of the world s largest economic and commercial centers. The birthplace of the metropolis was Europe, but the future of the city is being shaped in the wake of the hypergrowth of the Asian economies. 1 million people are moving to the Shanghai region every year. But the stakes are high as the city densifies and expands vertically, leaving virtually no space on the ground for the increasing amount of people and cars. Shanghai has become a top provider of modern lifestyle in Asia, with high-end entertainment like the brand new F1 track and the up coming EXPO This megatrend includes a demand for more living space, more cars, and on top of that a demand for more green leisure facilities. Energy consumption is skyrocketing. How do we provide energy efficient and sustainable solutions for this megatrend? Growing energy consumption follows the booming economy. Energy consumption within the building and transport sectors is rising along with the number of new consumers. This relation needs to be broken. 5 Jiading The Automobile City The site is located in Jiading -The Car City of Shanghai, known for the car industry and trade. Today the area is characterized by industrial sprawl, but the ambition is to turn the former industrial zone into a regional node for all car themed activities, combining production with service, trade, R&D, tourism and entertainment. Up until now $2.4 billion have been invested in the auto city, and another $3.6 billion will be spent over the next three years. The Jiading district is a landscape of industrial and rural sprawl. The Detroit of China is attracting car business from all over. Nicknamed The Automobile City Jiading has become Chinas main cluster for the car industry.
