Most years the destination is in the mountains of western Canada. This year is no exception. We have booked the Bill Putnam - Fairy Meadows hut for 2 consecutive weeks in July (16-23 and 23-30) This hut-based camp is open to all members of the Toronto Section, with at least minimal summer mountaineering experience. Given the area and difficulties of the terrain, it is recommended that we have a larger than usual number of experienced leaders in camp.
Proposed Itinerary Kick Off Meeting - Either Friday July 16th or 23 depending on your week, arrive in Golden. It is essential that all participants attend this meeting. During the group meeting camp committee members will review the, week's itinerary, participants expectations, do an equipment check. If you are running late, or cannot make the meeting, please make arrangements ahead of time or contact your trip leaders. Day 1 (Sat) meet at 7:00pm at Kicking horse lodge, shuttle to staging area, flight into camp, sleeping arrangements and dinner Day 2 snow school for most participants Days 2-6* explore the Peaks in the area with possible overnights bivies for larger summits Day* 7 (Fri) Explore the peaks in the area, pack and relax Day 8 (Sat) - fly out and shuttle return to Golden *Those staying for both weeks may do extended trips the first friday/saturday As we can not ensure time of helicopters, it is recommended to not plan to fly home on the Saturday. Travel and Transportation The most convenient airport is Calgary International Airport. Lake Louise is about 2 hours 15 minutes from Calgary and can be easily reached by shuttle bus or car. Brewster runs an airport shuttle that services Lake Louise ( ). Greyhound also runs a service through Lake Louise (
Trips may not run exactly according to schedule for reasons beyond our control (weather, wildlife, Parks regulations, etc). For this reason, we recommend that you do not book any scheduled travel (i.e. airplane flights) within a day or two of the last scheduled day of your camp. What s Included: Week 1 will have a guide present to advise trip leaders, ask advice, and lead from the rear. Daily excursions are provided by amateur leaders, on vacation themselves but volunteering their time and experience for others all meals while in camp (except for lunch on fly-in days) Accommodation at ACC s Bill Putnam Hut for the duration of the camp Shuttle service from Golden to staging area and return to Golden from staging Helicopter flight in/out of camp All group gear Participants must provide: Transportation to/from Kicking Horse Lodge Meals and accommodation outside of camp days Breakfast and lunch on fly-in days Personal Gear (see equipment list in)
While this camp can accommodate participants new to mountaineering, the organizers may place you on a waiting list while they await more leaders to help keep the ratio of new participants low. If you plan to attend and more importantly enjoy this camp, you must have a good level of fitness and be able to carry up to a 16 18kg (35 40lb) pack for several hours. Prior experience on rough terrain would add to your enjoyment as well. Personal Gear: Equipment The equipment list should be reviewed carefully when packing for this camp - please pack lightly. Do not hesitate to contact the camp organizers if you have any questions at all about your equipment. We recommend that the total weight of your gear not exceed pounds, for the helicopter The following stores offer rental gear: Gear Up (Canmore) (8:00am-7:00pm MST) 10% discount on rental gear and 10% discount on retail gear (except ropes) to ACC Mountain Adventure participants. Campus Outdoor Centre, University of Calgary (8:00am-8:00pm MST) Mountain Equipment Co-op (403) (Calgary) or (604) (Vancouver). MEC will apply a portion of your rental cost toward purchase.
Blisters are always a problem on camps and inevitably slow down the entire group. Please ensure your boots fit properly and have been tested out prior to your camp. Alert camp staff at the first sign of a blister blisters will only get worse if you wait.
