1 Wilderness Survival Merit Badge Information Package Revised: August 28, 2009 Although not required for the Eagle Scout rank, many Scouts and Scouters consider the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge to be one of the most important of all because of its potential to save the Scout s life. Scouts earn the merit badge by demonstrating proficiency in 12 requirements, culminating in the building of a natural shelter and spending the night in it. I. Instruction Method Completion of the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge requires a Scout to actively participate in a classroom session and a weekend outdoor experience. Scouts must complete the classroom session prior to participating in the overnight shelter experience. Classroom Session. September 10, This instructional session will provide Scouts with information and knowledge to help them survive in the wilderness. The following Wilderness Survival Merit Badge requirements will be covered: 1. Wilderness First Aid 5. Personal Survival Kits 9. Protection from Wildlife Weekend Outdoor Experience. October 3 4, The weekend outdoor experience will allow the Scouts to learn and demonstrate survival skills in a realistic but controlled environment. The following requirements will be covered: 11. Clothing 2. Survival Priorities 3. Panic and Morale 4. Survival Challenges 12. Eating in the Wilderness 6. Build and Light Fires 7. Survival Signals 10. Water Treatment 8. Shelter Building 1

2 II. What to Bring Scouts will be outside in the elements for the entire weekend, regardless of the weather. To this end, they must be appropriately dressed and have the necessary equipment. Clothing and gear inspections will be conducted on Saturday morning. Those Scouts lacking necessary clothing or gear will not be allowed to continue. Scouts are required to be in the clothing and bring the Small Backpack and Personal Survival Kit listed below. Clothing (must be worn to the campout) Long Underwear (base layer, tops and bottoms) Long Pants and Long Sleeved Shirt (wool or polypro/fleece; no jeans) Wool or poly socks Waterproof Hiking Boots (No snow boots, running shoes or other substitute) Rain Hat Stocking Cap Warm Gloves Rain Gear (reasonable quality, may be in day pack below if not raining) Small Backpack Water (two liters) Flashlight w/extra batteries Pocketknife Compass Firestarter & lighter Matches Small First Aid Kit Two hand warmers Space Blanket Extra clothes (coat, shirt, pants, socks, underwear) Three energy bars/cliff bars) One 10 X 10 poncho or tarp 20 ft cord or paracord Personal Survival Kit Requirement #5 states that Scouts must put together a personal survival kit and explain how each item in it could be useful. Because there is no stated prohibition against purchasing a commercially available small kit, Scouts have the option of building the kit from scratch or purchasing a kit. Regardless, Scouts must demonstrate the required knowledge of the kit s contents and purpose. The Personal Survival Kit must be completed prior to and presented for inspection at the Weekend Outdoor Experience. 2

3 In order to live up to our motto: "Be Prepared", you should carry a personal survival kit every time you go into the wilderness. Various commercial Personal Survival Kits are available for purchase: Tacoma Mountain Rescue s Storm & Survival Kit. $25. REI Equipped to Survive Pocket Survival Pak. $33. REI, Sportsman s, Online BCB Combat Survival Tin. $30. Survival Kit in a Sardine Can. $20. Coughlin s Survival Kit in a Can. $ BSA Office Tumwater, Cabelas, Sportsman s. Here are some ideas that you might consider having in your personal kit (optional): Waterproofed matches 25 lb test fishing line & fishhooks of various sizes 2 small fishing lures Pencil and small notebook Snare wire Water purifying tablets Whistle Small Tree Saw Surgical adhesive tape, Band aids, razor blade Roll of dental floss (to be used for making shelters) Tiny Compass Extra strength Tylenol (with permission of your parents) 4 bouillon cubes Hard candies Teabags ALL OTHER GEAR, FOOD, CLOTHING, TOYS, ELECTRONICS OR MATERIAL WILL BE CONFISCATED. III. Spending the Night in a Natural Shelter Requirement #8 states the Scout must build a shelter from natural materials and spend the night in it. Although challenging, this experience provides the Scouts with unparalleled selfconfidence and pride. The Scouts will spend the majority of Saturday afternoon building their shelters under the close instruction of experienced Scouts and Scouters. Scouts may build individual shelters or sleep in groups of two. Sleeping bags and tents are not allowed because they likely would not be available in a survival situation. The Weekend Outdoor Experience will simulate a survival situation but will also ensure the personal safety of all participants. Facilities will be available to allow for treatment of hypothermia and other environmental concerns. Those sleeping outside in shelters will be monitored periodically throughout the night. 3
