Suggestions for Use These are the ways that I used these resources in my classroom The beauty of these resources is you can use them the way I did or put your own spin on them
Genetics This page is to be used as a DIVIDER in your student s interactive notebook These are wonderful when putting multiple unit resources in each notebook That way students can flip Genetics right to the section you are currently working on
CUT AND THROW AWAY This paper pocket can be cut out and used to house papers (you d have to fold full sheets of paper in half), warm ups, assessments, etc. After I switched 100% to interactive notebooks in my classroom, I realized students STILL needed a folder or SOMETHING to keep graded homework, rubrics, check sheets, and graded quizzes. These paper pockets serve that purpose :) Genetics Paper Pocket
Gregor Mendel Gregor Mendel is my favorite scientist This mini book is a (possible) 16 page research project. Students use information from their text books, internet, or other resources to gather information about the father of genetics. Tip: I used Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas to help students comprehend exactly what Mendel Born: Occupation: did Although this is a picture book, the reading level is still challenging enough for middle schoolers
Experiments with pea plants: Pea Plant Illustration: Fun Facts:
Genetics Heredity Vocabulary Cards These cards can be used for task cards, word wall words, or flash cards for students. I used these as flash cards in my classroom. I just made copies of them one sided and stapled together to create a packet for this kids (yes, it does use a lot of paper, but I am a super-recycler) The kids then cut them into flash cards and wrote the definitions on the back. They used them to study Tip: We created a small paper pocket out of construction paper to tape/glue into our interactive notebooks to house the flash cards so the students had a place to put them Heterozygous Homozygous
Hybrid Purebred Dominant Recessive
Genotype Phenotype DNA Chromosome
Allele Gene Traits Probability
Homozygous: An allele combination using two of the SAME alleles (2 dominant or 2 recessive). The prefix HOMO means SAME. Learn it, love it. Heterozygous: An allele combination using two DIFFERENT alleles (1 dominant, 1 recessive). The prefix HETERO means different.. Students will see the prefixes homo and hetero their entire science student careers Homozygous vs. Heterozygous Homozygous BB Heterozygous Bb
Hybrid vs. Purebred Purebred Homozygous: An allele combination using two of the SAME alleles (2 dominant or 2 recessive). The prefix HOMO means SAME. Learn it, love it. Heterozygous: An allele combination using two DIFFERENT alleles (1 dominant, 1 recessive). The prefix HETERO means different.. Students will see the prefixes homo and hetero their entire science student careers Hybrid
Dominant: A trait that will appear in the offspring if one of the parent contributes it. Recessive: Both allele copies from each parent MUST be present in order for the recessive trait to show up. Dominant vs. Recessive Dominant G Recessive g
Heterozygous Definition: Two DIFFERENT alleles for one trait. Example: Bb Genotype Definition: Combination of genes for a trait. The letter combination. Example: The genotype for his hair color is Bb. Purebred Definition: Having two of the SAME forms of a trait from parent to offspring. Example: HH, both parents have dominant allele This is an alternative foldable for doing all 6 words at a time This could also be used as a homework assignment or warm up *Cut along the dotted lines and fold along the solid lines. You will have 6 doors. *You can use this foldable for however you would like, but I will do the following: 1. Students draw a picture/visual representation of the word on the FRONT flap. 2. On the inside LEFT flap, students will write the definition of the word. 3. On the inside RIGHT flap, students will give a real-word example or sentence to help them make connections. I will use this foldable in a lesson right before I teach punnett squares If the students master these words, it will make solving Punnett squares much easier for them Homozygous Definition: Two of the SAME alleles for one trait. Example: BB, Bb Phenotype Definition: The physical appearance of the genotype. Example: The phenotype for his hair color was brown. Hybrid Definition: Having two DIFFERENT forms of a trait from parent to offspring. Example: Hh, green peas crossed with yellow peas.
Dominant Traits Recessive Traits Brown Eyes Grey, Green, Hazel, & Blue Eyes Curly Hair Blonde & Light Hair Widow s Peak Dimples Free Earlobes Freckles Red Hair My students are ALWAYS asking which traits are dominant, which are inherited You can do a quick Google search to find out, but here is a nice cheat sheet for students to glue in their notebooks or keep in their paper pocket Straight Hair Normal Hairline No Dimples Dark Hair Attached Earlobes Broad Lips No Freckles Smooth Chin Thin Lips Long Eyelashes Cleft Chin Right Handedness Short Eyelashes Can Roll Tongue Left Handedness Second Toe Longer Than First Toe Cannot Roll Tongue First Toe Longer Than Second Toe 39
Genotype Two words students always have a difficult time remembering Students can fill this foldable with examples, the definition, sentences, or visuals Genotype: The allele combination (letters) Phenotype: The physical appearance of the genotype. I always tell my students to remember PH ecotype = PH ysical appearance bb Phenotype Blue Eyes
Identifying Genotype & Phenotype ANSWERS 1. A man has blue eyes (b). Genotype = bb Phenotype = blue eyes 2. A woman has curly hair (C). Genotype = CC or Cc Phenotype = Curly Hair 3. A kid with blonde hair (b). Genotype = bb Phenotype = Blonde Hair A great and simple practice for understanding genotype & phenotype 41
Students will have fun thinking about their OWN inherited & acquired traits Inherited: Traits passed down from parent to offspring that are carried on chromosomes. Example: Hair Color, Eye Color Acquired: Traits learned from your environment and upbringing. Example: Manners, Sense of Humor Inherited vs. Acquired Traits Inherited Acquired Traits Traits
This is a great graphic organizer for students to record THEIR inherited traits. I have students draw pictures to go with their traits and I hang the really good ones on the wall in the classroom My Inherited Traits Some students take this assignment and hang it on their locker before they put it in their notebook. Students can cut this out, glue it in their notebooks and put their traits directly in their notebooks 43
This is a great graphic organizer for students to record THEIR acquired traits. I have students draw pictures to go with their traits and I hang the really good ones on the wall in the classroom My Acquired Traits Some students take this assignment and hang it on their locker before they put it in their notebook.
