The upload process may time out when these files are uploaded via the Classic Upload Tool. The Enhanced Upload Tool indicates the progress of the upload, and allows you to interrupt or pause the upload process by clicking the Stop button. The upload process will resume when you click the Upload button again, but only during the same browser session. If you close the browser window or navigate to another page in EES, the upload process will be aborted entirely. Using the Enhanced Upload Tool If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Enhanced Upload Tool requires that you first enable Java applets and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) v1.5 or higher. Restart your browser after installing JRE. For more information, click here. The Enhanced Upload Tool has been signed with Elsevier s Code Signing Certificate for Java. The first time you access the Enhanced Upload Tool, a popup will be displayed: Always trust content from this publisher is checked by default, so the popup appears only the first time the Enhanced Upload Tool is accessed. Click Run to launch the Enhanced Upload Tool.

2 Java is preinstalled on Macs, so the Enhanced Upload Tool should work out of the box for Mac users. When the Enhanced Upload Tool is used for the first time on a Mac, the digital signature popup looks like this: Click Trust to launch the Enhanced Upload Tool. To upload a file using the Enhanced Upload Tool, click Browse to select a file, then click OK. Click Upload to attach the file to the submission. The Enhanced Upload Tool indicates the progress of the upload, and allows you to interrupt or pause the upload process. To pause the upload, click Stop. The upload process will be resumed when you click Upload again, but only within the same browser session. If you close the browser window or navigate to another page in EES, the upload process will be aborted entirely.

3 The Enhanced Upload Tool supports all the file types supported by the Classic Upload Tool. A list of both supported and unsupported file types is given at the end of this page. If one of your files is of a type not supported by the system, or you are uploading a zip file that contains an unsupported file, try uploading it as a supplementary item by selecting the appropriate option from the drop-down menu in the Item field on the Attach Files page. The Enhanced Upload Tool currently does not support the upload of multiple files simultaneously. Only one file can be uploaded at a time. Compressed files are unpacked by the system after upload. EES checks all files, compressed and uncompressed, against the submission size cap of 700MB. If you encounter problems On a Windows machine, if you try to access the Enhanced Upload Tool without enabling Java first, you will encounter the following screen: If Java is enabled but you click Cancel (or, for Mac users, Don t trust) when the digital signature popup appears, you will see this type of error:

4 If you encounter this error, you may either switch to the Classic Upload Tool or else restart your browser to generate the popup again and run the Enhanced Upload Tool. Note: Firefox will not allow you to log into EES at all until Java is enabled. If you are using Firefox and try to log into EES using a computer on which Java is not enabled, you will see the following error: If Java is enabled on your computer but the Enhanced Upload Tool still does not run properly, try clearing the Java Console. Right-click on the Java Platform icon in the tray at lower right of your screen, and select Open 1.6.0_20 Console : Then click Clear to clear out the log from your last session:

5 Clearing the Java Console also clears the JRE cache (a storage area within the Java Console), which allows the latest version of Java to load and install. Alternatively, you can switch to the Classic Upload Tool.

6 Note: To run the Enhanced Upload Tool on Ubuntu LTS with Firefox, you may need to uninstall both the OpenJDK installation that is standard with Ubuntu and the IcedTea plugin for Firefox. Instead, you need to use the Sun version of Java: search for sun-java6 in Synaptic and install all items. Then run the following command in the Firefox plugins directory: sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so This command allows Firefox to see the Sun Java plugin. If you now open Firefox and start (or edit) a submission, the Enhanced Upload Tool should load correctly.
