1 Basher 5-2 Language Arts VERB Assignments Mrs. Aguilera Name: CHAPTER ONE: (Action Verbs) Do, do, do DO DO! -A word that shows action. It tells what the subject of a sentence DOES or DID. -(Examples) -She bangs the drums. -She banged the drum. -Action verbs express many of the actions that people do every day. Talk, walk, run, play, go, and make are all common action verbs. -Assignment: Using the page given by Mrs. Aguilera, highlight all the action verbs you find on that page. (Must use a highlighter!) CHAPTER TWO: (Direct Objects) Action Verb, Direct Object..WHAT???? -A noun or pronoun that RECEIVES the action of the verb. - -It answers the question WHOM? or WHAT? after an action verb. It is the predicate part of the sentence. -(Examples) -Riley judges dogs. -Kayden gives ribbons to the winners. -I bring my gray cat. -Assignment: Using the page given by Mrs. Aguilera, underline all ACTION verbs you find on that page. 2 CHAPTER THREE: (Verb Tenses) Present, Past, & Future! -Tense: tells when something happens. -Present Tense: Tells that something is happening NOW. ~Example: Drew explores caves. -Past Tense: shows that something has already happened. ~Example: Yesterday Drew explored a small cave. -Future Tense: shows that something is going to happen. ~Example: Tomorrow Drew will explore a large cave. -Assignment: Using the page given by Mrs. Aguilera, label all underlined verbs as either present, past, or future. By the (*) items, re-write the sentence using a different tense of the verb. CHAPTER FOUR: (Subject-Verb Agreement) -A verb must agree with its subject. A singular subject takes a singular verb. A plural subject takes a plural verb. -Example (Singular) Brynn likes poetry about nature. -Example (Plural) The girls like poetry about birds. -Assignment: (Subject/Verb Matching Game) J Each student will get four index cards. You will use one card to write each of the following items: ~Blue card = one singular noun ~Yellow card = one plural noun ~White card = one singular ACTION verb ~Pink card = one plural ACTION verb (Try choosing nouns & verbs that are different from your classmates! 3 CHAPTER FIVE: (Spelling Present- and Past- Tense Verbs) -To form present-tense singular verbs: *Add s to most verbs. *Add es to verbs that end in s, ss, ch, sh, x, or z. -Zoe dances on her toes. -Cooper catches his dance partner. *Change the Y to an I before adding es to verbs that end in a consonant and y. -Izel carries her dance shoes everywhere. -To form past-tense verbs: *Add d or ed to most verbs. *Add d that already end in E. -Myles watched and loved the performance. *Change Y to an I before adding ed to verbs that end in a consonant and y. -Victoria hurried to the holiday concert. *In most cases, double the consonant before adding ed to one-syllable verbs that end in one vowel and one consonant. -Jayden scanned the audience. -Assignment: Using the page given by Mrs. Aguilera from Chapter Five, change all the underlined action verbs to its opposite form. ~(If the underlined verb is present, make it past tense.) ~(If the underlined verb is past, make it present tense.) 4 CHAPTER SIX (COMMAS) -A comma tells the reader to pause between the parts of a sentence. -Use commas to separate three or more items in a series. ~Landan brought music, food, and games to the party. -Use a comma or commas to set off a person s name when the person is spoken to directly. ~Gage, I loved your party. ~I need directions to your house, Jayden. ~Your house, Brody, is awesome. -Use a comma to show a pause after an introductory word such as yes, no, or well. ~Yes, I would like to come with you. -Assignment: Write an Interview with Captain Scott O Grady! Write interview questions you might ask Captain Scott O Grady about his story of being an F-16 Fighter Pilot and his experience so far in the book. Organize your questions, and CIRCLE each comma you use. *Must make at least (3) questions using each underlined area above. *Mrs. Aguilera will give an example in class! J CHAPTER SEVEN (Main Verbs & Helping Verbs) -Main Verbs: Show what the subject DOES or IS. ~Dalton is writing a book about the space shuttle. -Helping Verbs: Help the main verb show an action of make a statement. ~Dalton is writing a book about the space shuttle. -Assignment: Using the page given by Mrs. Aguilera from Chapter Seven, underline each helping verb you find ONCE, and underline each main verb you find TWICE. 5 CHAPTER EIGHT (Using Helping Verbs) -Forms of be can be used with a main verb ending in ing to show action that is or was continuing. ~The judges are picking the winner. ~The contestants were waiting patiently. -Has, have, and had can be used with the past form of most verbs to show an action that has already happened. ~Mason has created a new science project. SUBJECT BE + ING Has, have, or had plus the past form I Am playing Have, had played You Are playing Have, had played He, She, It Is playing Has, had played We, They Are playing Have, had played -Assignment: Divide into two teams. (Pg 185) Follow Mrs. Aguilera s instructions for a Visual Game. J -Break into pairs You and your partner will perform various activities around the classroom, using helping verbs in complete sentences to describe what they are doing. ~Ex: I am helping Bryan sharpen pencils. ~Ex: Jasmine has helped Jason clean off his desk. 6 CHAPTER NINE (Linking Verbs!) Am, is, are, was were, those are linking verbs, mmmmm, hmmmmmm! -Linking Verb: links the subject to a noun or adjective. They do NOT show action. Subjects and linking verbs must agree. -Noun that follows a linking verb renames or identifies the subject (PREDICATE NOMNATIVE follows a linking verb. ~Ms. Grinvalds is our teacher. -Adjective that follows a linking verb describes the subject. (PREDICATE ADJECIVE follows a linking verb. ~The choir seems large. COMMON LINKING VERBS *Am, *Is, *Are, * Was, *Were, *Be, *Been, *Become, *Became, *Feel, *Felt, *Will be, *Seem, *Appear, *Look, *Taste, *Smell -Assignment: Using the page from Chapter Nine given by Mrs. Aguilera, highlight all linking verbs you find in the given passage. 7 CHAPTER TEN (Irregular Verbs) -Irregular Verb: does not add d or ed to form the past tense or to use with has, have, or had. The form of a verb used with has, have, or had is called the PAST PARTICIPLE. ~Present Tense: Anna and Ethan begin their debate today. ~Past Tense: Tod and Donna began their debate yesterday. ~Past Participle: Kendra and Kyle have begun their debate already. 8 CHAPTER 12 (Contractions with NOT) -Contraction: a shortened form of two words. ~do not = don t ~should not = shouldn t -An apostrophe ( ) shows where the letter o in not has been left out of the contraction. A few contractions do not follow this rule. In can t, both the n and the o are dropped. Also, the words will not become won t.
