3 Training Options at Avon City Ford AUTOMOTIVE Avon City Ford Training Services is an NZQA and MITO (Motor Industry Training Organisation) accredited Training Provider. We have the support from the Southern Institute of Technology and we use a range of their automotive unit standard learning and assessment material as well as our own. We developed the Automotive Training to support schools with their student achievement for NCEA Level 1 & 2. The theory part of the course needs to incorporated into the school timetable and have a teacher available to support the students, we will supply all the teaching material required and support the teacher. It is important that we work closely with young people in year 10 to identify a Career Pathway for those students who are interested in a career in the automotive industry that they interested in. It is important these students can experience STAR funded courses so we can give these students direction and subject advice for when they enter into year 11 (NCEA Level 1). Technology, compliance and practical processes has had a significant impact on all trades so students need to have a high level of Literacy and Numeracy as well as a good understanding of science. We collectively need to work to engage and keep students at school longer so they can achieve NCEA Level 2, this will meet the Government s target of 85% of 18 years olds achieving Level 2 or equivalent by We have put together a range of courses to allow students to gain National Certificates at Level 1 and/or Level 2 with the unit standards being listed on the Vocational Pathways. This means the unit standards not only contribute to NCEA Level 1 & 2 but these unit standards are relevant to the industry and its qualifications. We all need to come up with ideas, strategies to introduce new concepts, remodel the old curriculum to ensure it is working to benefit the students and the schools. Students require clear pathways when they have decide to leave school to enter into the Tertiary Education Sector this is where a robust and supportive curriculum is so important to meet students and employer s needs. Our courses are flexible to meet the schools and/or students requirements we have created them so you can create a specific Learning Plan for a student but also fund them by different means to give better flexibility. We have reviewed our courses so we have reduced the costings on some of them. YOUTH GUARANTEE Our Youth Guarantee Courses, is an NZQA and industry recognised Automotive Training course and this is a FREE course for students attending. The aim of the course is to raise the educational achievement of 16 to 19 year olds to a Level 2 Tertiary Qualification. The trainees will be working towards the National Certificate in Motor Industry Foundation Skills (Level 1) & Entry Skills (Level 2). Literacy and numeracy is integrated into the programme and if the learner requires extra help we will endeavour to support them. The course covers the students travel expenses and in some cases students can access Study link. DRIVING We are still doing some Learner Licence Training; contact Phil or Maringi if you would like to put a course together. Page 3

4 GATEWAY PROGRAMME As a Gateway Training Provider we will support the Gateway Co-ordinator and the student in their work experience placement and in their achievement of industry unit standards. The schools selection criteria process needs to be robust to ensure that the students can complete the work to an acceptable level within the time frame specified. At the start of the programme it is recommended the students come into Avon City Ford s workshop to complete the Introduction to the Workplace Course. This is a Three Day - 9 Credit Programme, where the students will experience working in a Motor Vehicle Dealership and complete the unit standards (listed on the opposite page). While the student is here, this will give the tutor a chance to see how competent the student is in completing the theory work set for them and to demonstrate to the tutor their practical ability. During the course we will discuss with each trainee the best option that will suit their skills and guide them to a career option that will better suit them. We will send you a Training Plan that will have the students list of unit standard work books that they will complete while on the programme. We can also assist you in placing students into work experience if you are having trouble finding a host employer. When the student has been placed into Work Experience Contact Phil Hayes, so that he has the students and employers contact details on his records so that he can support the employer/supervisor through the verification procedure, if required. This unit standard assessment will also be sent to you with the Trainee Induction Form to give the host employer with the instructions on how to complete the assessment tool as it is an observation assessment. We will send out the Learners Training Plan to the Co-ordinator, this plan has the unit standard achievement, version, level and credit. It also gives you a date that unit has to be handed in for assessment Level 2, Credit 4:- Demonstrate good work habits and perform safe work practices in the motor Industry. Total Credits for the course is: - 13 Credits COST: Introduction to the Work Place $ GST Inc - per Student TEC now require that Gateway Students have to achieve and minimum of 20 credits, we have a range of Level 1 and/or 2 unit standards to choose from.
