This may include networking, management workshops and seminars, training and career development, professional accreditation and qualifications, management information, membership benefits, a mentoring facility, scholarships and awards. NZIM administers national management educational qualifications though secondary and tertiary institutions and undertakes advocacy activities and research. The Ascent of Management programme has been developed over many years and is designed to facilitate management development pathways. The qualifications and options are updated in close consultation with industry and the tertiary sector to best meet the needs of students and managers. Through the Ascent programme, NZIM offers certificate and diploma qualifications to students at a range of secondary and tertiary establishments throughout New Zealand, and these qualifications are explained in this brochure. NZIM also designs training programmes that enable managers and organisations to identify their developmental needs and fulfil them by participation in carefully designed learning programmes. NZIM offers training and qualifications to managers with varying levels of existing qualifications, through workplace training and organised courses, and these services are not detailed in this publication. Please contact your NZIM regional offices for further details of these programmes. NZIM philosophy NZIM aims to build management and leadership capabilities through education, learning, management development, research and recognition. Our programmes give a foundation of business knowledge and management practice directly relevant to the student s work experience. Our focus is on student-centred learning. Our practical and accessible qualifications give students skills that they can apply in their day-to-day work or life experiences. The courses can be adapted to meet particular learning needs and student interests, and can be combined to provide a unique integrated experiential programme. Assessments are designed by the provider using guidelines that show how they can be integrated with the teaching and learning programme. 12 Introduction NZIM Certificate in Language, Culture and Management (CLCM) The Certificate in Language, Culture and Management integrates English language and culture with management skills. The course is specifically to meet the language and cultural needs of people with English as a second language seeking work in New Zealand or students wishing to move to diploma study. The programme consolidates and contextualises the language skills students generally require for entry to study in New Zealand. The Certificate provides a six-month enriched environment of language and culture, with a focus on work processes and management. Students will be able to recognise and adapt to the culture (including legislation) of the New Zealand workplace and to use language associated with New Zealand management practices. Course description Students will complete FOUR of the six optional papers listed from the Certificate in Management, which are selected by the provider to be integrated with elements of the language and culture module. Each 10 credit paper involves around 100 hours of student learning, and the 20 credit language and culture module means that the whole course will take the equivalent of six months full-time study. The teacher guide supports teachers to use the module in an integrated way, i.e. to draw out language and cultural aspects of the four optional Certificate papers. Because of its integrated nature no recognition can be made for credits or prior learning. Evidence to demonstrate a students competence and progression towards meeting the learning requirements for the 880 Language and Culture Module will be gathered throughout the programme of study. Entry to the course The course is designed for people who have not studied management before. The recognised entry to this course is a minimum of IELTS Level 5 or its equivalent. We recommend that students are assesed prior to and at the completion of the qualification to confirm progress in English language. Course modules The optional papers are taken from the NZIM Certificate in Management and are worth 10 credits each at level 4 equivalent. Core paper (compulsory): 880 Language and Culture This module consists of 20 credits at Level 4 equivalent. 10

Secondary and tertiary institutions wishing to offer the programme should contact NZIM Inc. Moderation Due to the integrated nature of the teaching of the Certificate in Language, Culture and Management, moderation will be undertaken as a single inclusive process, and both pre-assessment and post-assessment moderation is required. Whether or not you have been separately moderated for the Certificate in Management papers, you need to submit your assessment schedule and assessment tasks for the CLCM to NZIM for moderation. Credit from their NZIM courses can also count towards University Entrance, and for credit inclusion to NCEA Certificates. All courses from NZIM Certificate in Management and NZIM Certificate in Small Business Management are recognised for credit inclusion into NCEA. Each of the NZIM courses that a student completes is worth ten credits at Level 4, even though for NCEA the credit inclusion is at Level 2 & 3. The NZIM Record of Learning is also a record of NCEA credit equivalents for the courses students have passed. Students may claim 10 credits into NCEA Level 2 or Level 3 certificates for each course passed, up to 80 credits total. Students may, if they wish, claim the credits for up to two years after the year in which they have passed the course. For instance a student may pass the course in Year 12 but claim the credits in Year 13. See NZQA website nzqa-rules/secondary-schools-supporting-information/credit-inclusion/ new-zealand-institute-of-management-certificate-of-management How to claim the credit inclusions If students do not have enough credits from NCEA unit standards and achievement standards to be awarded their NCEA Certificate, they need to apply for credit inclusions. The student will need to approach the school to apply to NZQA for credit inclusions on the student s behalf. The school is required to complete an NZQA Credit Inclusion: Reporting Student Results form (available on the NZQA website) and verify the student s NZIM results, and submit this to NZQA by 28 February. NZQA then processes the credit inclusion application and verify it back to schools, and students can check online to see when their NCEA Certificate has been awarded. NB: The student will be awarded the NCEA Certificate, which will be mailed to them, even though the credit inclusion results do NOT show up on the student Record of Learning from NZQA. University Entrance NZIM Certificate in Management courses may provide 14 level 3 credits in a third approved subject area, as long as students have gained literacy and numeracy and other entry requirements in two other approved subjects. Universities may then consider students to have reached the university entrance standard and they may be admitted ad eundem statum at entrance level. This recognition is at the discretion of the universities. Further details can be obtained from the NZIM website co.nz/site/students/default.aspx 13 13

27 NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health) Introduction The Practice Managers and Administrators Association of New Zealand (PMAANZ) and NZIM Inc. have developed the NZIM Diploma in Practice Management (Health) as a health practice management qualification. This Diploma qualification has been designed specifically for competent or experienced managers currently working in medical or health practices, to provide the knowledge, skills and competencies to undertake their roles efficiently and effectively. Some assessments require access to medical or health practices. It is expected that all participants will be managing or administering health and medical practices, and have ready access to the health practice or other suitable environment as a condition of their enrolment. Where managers have limited experience or knowledge relating to the management of health practices they may benefit from completing the Certificate in Practice Management (Health). It is expected that graduates from this programme will be able to take responsibility for the management and administration of a health practice, including the recruitment, supervision and training of staff, accounting and systems administration, compliance and reporting functions and internal and external communications. They will have a sound understanding of health policy and legislative requirements and they will be able to manage and respond to patient and customer relationships with sensitivity and respect. Course description and entry to the course This qualification is an NZQA approved Level 5 diploma programme of 140 credits. It consists of six papers from the New Zealand Diploma in Business, as well as a specialist paper called Management of Health Practices. It provides a more in-depth examination of the processes of managing businesses, with a focus on human relations, financial and communications strategies, knowledge of legal requirements and other compliance issues, and an understanding of health policy and processes. It is designed to equip particpants with the skills necessary to manage a medium to large health practice. 400 Accounting Principles 560 Business Communication Accounting Practices or 602 Management Accounting Organisations and Management 633 Human Resource Management Business Computing 996 Management of Health Practices The Management of Health Practices paper will cover three major areas: The health system and health economics; legislation, regulations and compliance; cultural awareness and safety with an understanding of current health and welfare related issues. The NZ School of Business and Government (SBG) offers this qualification through on-line learning see their website for further details page html You may alternatively apply for some of the New Zealand Diploma in Business courses with a polytechnic or other provider that suits you. If you want further information on this qualification, go to the courses section of the NZIM website qualifications.aspx 25

28 Introduction NZIM Diploma in Management (Advanced) Dip Mgt (Advanced) The NZIM Diploma in Management (Advanced) builds on the skills of the Diploma in Management (Dip Mgt) for those who wish to pursue a professional management career. Normally entrants will have completed the Dip Mgt, or the New Zealand Diploma in Business, or their equivalent in other qualifications. The programme also provides an entry-point into advanced qualifications for middle or senior managers wishing to provide conceptual rigour for their experiences. They may enter on evidence that they have practical competence, skills and experiences to enable them to benefit from the challenge provided by the programme. The NZIM Diploma in Management (Advanced) is approved as a 160 credit qualification at Level 6. Course description Students need to complete eight modules, most of which may be credited from papers from the NZ Diploma in Business, and others of which may be credited from other approved provider qualifications. The course involves two compulsory modules, plus at least one module that explores management process, and up to five optional modules - many of which may be credited from the NZ Dip Bus. Each module represents a nominal 200 hours, or 20 credits at Level 6. Graduates of the revised NZIM Diploma in Management will have already completed the NZ Dip Bus papers 630 Leadership and 636 Applied Management (the compulsory core papers of the Dip Mgt Advanced), so will need to complete only six further modules to complete the qualification. Entry to the course For students without considerable management experience the minimum entry requirement is the NZIM Diploma in Management, or an equivalent course of study as may be defined by the teaching institution. For experienced middle or senior managers wishing to upskill, the Leadership and Applied Management modules or their equivalent constitute an orientation to the course and to academic learning. 26
