Introduction We offer a number of different plumbing and gasfitting theory qualifications and courses for apprentices, those who have completed an apprenticeship, or working plumbers or gasfitters who need to maintain their licence. Our courses do not cover any of the practical block course components you need to do to become a licensed plumber or gasfitter. However, they do prepare you for the external registration examinations set by the New Zealand Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (NZPGDB) and are part of the Board s continuing professional development requirements. 5 Plumbing & Gasfitting Registration Qualification Code: OP4251 Level: 4 This qualification prepares you to sit the NZPGDB registration examinations. Once you ve passed these exams, and if you meet the other requirements of the New Zealand Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Regulations 1977, you can get your practising licence to be a licensed plumber or gasfitter and work under the direction of a certifying plumber or certifying gasfitter. Qualification When you pass each course, you will get an Open Polytechnic Certificate of Achievement When you pass both courses, you will get an Open Polytechnic Certificate in Plumbing & Gasfitting Once you have passed 9193, you will have 16 credits for the Gasfitting Relicensing requirements. Qualification structure This qualification has two courses, Plumbing Registration and Gasfitting Registration Plumbing Registration This course prepares you for the NZPGDB plumbing registration exam. It covers: introduction to plumbing; water, metals and plastic; sealants and adhesives; calculating and measuring; pressure, hydrostatics and hydraulics; density and relative density; heat; drawing; legislation; safety, scaffolding and excavations; roofwork; calculations; gas welding, arc welding and gas cutting; hot water supply; solid fuel domestic appliances; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; back flow prevention; cold water; hot water; and foul water systems Gasfitting Registration This course prepares you for the NZPGDB gasfitting registration exam. It covers: water, metals and plastics; sealants and adhesives; calculating and measuring; gas laws, density and relative density; fuel gases, combustion, flames and burners; heat; drawing; installing pipework, testing for soundness; locating and repairing leaks; testing and purging; meters and regulators; combustion, flame failure devices and thermostats; ignition devices and systems; storage water heating; instantaneous gas water heating; ventilation, flues; identifying, selecting, installing and testing flue systems; LPG; installing LPG cylinders; installing regulators and changeover valves; control systems; appliance commissioning; primary and secondary meters; reading meters; and installing and bypassing meters. Entry requirements To enrol for these courses, you need to meet one of the following criteria: Have completed an apprenticeship but not passed the examination (journeyman) Hold a limited certificate for a continuous period of 5 years as per the Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Regulations 1997 Have completed the National Certificate in Plumbing & Gasfitting and have not passed the registration exam Have an overseas qualification and are required by the NZPGDB to sit the registration exam Have been directed by the NZPGDB to sit the registration exam. 3

6 Assessment Each course has two assessments to test your progress and a final assessment with exam-type questions. The results from these assessments do not count towards your examination results, but they give you a good opportunity to practise answering examination questions. The final assessment determines your grade for the course. Examinations Examinations are held in June and November each year. It is your responsibility to enrol for the examinations. You can get enrolment forms from the NZPGDB. See the last page of this brochure for contact details. Hours of study You should allow about 330 hours of study for each course. However, the time you need to spend will depend on your existing experience and knowledge. Certificate of Achievement in Gasfitting Relicensing Qualification Code: OP2244 Levels: 4 5 Qualification NZPGDB licensed and certifying gasfitters must gain a minimum of 16 NZPGDB credits per year to continue working in the industry. This requirement can be met through this qualification. We will report all successful completions to the NZPGDB. Qualification structure There are eight technical gasfitting courses for you to choose from. Note: 8 of your 16 credits must be from this subject area. Both of these courses are worth 16 NZPGDB credits. Assessment There is one assessment per course. This must be completed and returned to your tutor for marking. Once you have successfully finished each assessment, we will send you a record of study. Hours of study We recommend you allow around 4 5 hours per course, including time to prepare your assessments. 4

7 Certifying Plumbing & Gasfitting Qualification Code there are three courses in this qualification: OP Certifying Common, OP Certifying Plumbing, OP Certifying Gasfitting Level: 5 Qualification These courses prepare you for the relevant NZPGDB Certifying examinations, held in June and November each year. Qualification structure Certifying Common This course covers: the principles and procedures for legislation, contracts, business establishment, business management, industrial relations, and contract management; principles of natural and mechanical heating and ventilation installations; advanced techniques of workmanship and technology; testing materials and installations; health and safety procedures; planning and drawing interpretation for plumbing and gasfitting work; the work of the building services engineer; and applied science affecting design of plumbing and gasfitting installations as required for registration as a Certifying plumber/gasfitter. Certifying Plumbing This course covers plumbing work with regard to domestic and industrial applications. You will study specialised legislation; standards and the application of these standards; practice and applied technology; and safety related to plumbing at the Certifying registration level. It includes drawing, legislation, roofwork, sanitation, solar water heating, pipe sizing, pumps, heat ventilation, water supply and first aid. Certifying Gasfitting This course covers: legislation and standards; installation science; design and safety; maintenance; industrial controls and electrical circuitry; fault diagnosis; and commissioning procedures required for registration as a Certifying gasfitter. It includes Acts, codes and regulations; low-pressure metering; safety devices; regulators; flow controls; burners; space heating; central heating; flues and pipesizing; combustion and flue-gas analysis; and LPG. Entry requirements These courses are only available to Licensedplumbers and/or Licensedgasfitters or anyone directed by the NZPGDB. Assessment Each course includes assessments which you need to complete and return to your tutor for marking. 8 Drainlaying Qualification Code: NC5438 Level: 3 Qualification This qualification is for people who are already working in drainlaying. 9 General Information English language You need to be able to read and write well in English so you can write your assignments and understand written English course materials. Fees All fee information is available on our website at Administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable $55 administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year. Overseas Handling fee If you live overseas you will need to pay an extra, non-refundable international handling charge. The amount of this fee will depend on where you live. The overseas handling fee will be added to your course fees when you enrol. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Record of Achievement Some of the plumbing and gasfitting courses those with a US in their course code are unit standards and are Licensedon the NZQA framework. If you are studying these courses and you are Licensedon the NZQA database, please provide your Record of Achievement number or your national student number on your Application for Enrolment form. If you are not registered, we will arrange this when you have finished your first unit standard. Any unit standards you gain through the year will be added to your Record of Achievement by March of the following year. You can access your Record of Achievement online or you can phone NZQA and ask for a copy of it.
