2 WELCOME TO OPEN POLYTECHNIC Whether you are looking to improve your career prospects, or just learn something new, we can help you achieve your goal. We specialise in open learning learning that gives you more freedom to decide what you study and where you study. Our courses are specifically designed for delivery by distance, which means you can fit your study around your life. And just because you are learning by distance, it doesn t mean you have to do it alone. You will have access to your tutors and lecturers by or phone and to other students studying the same course through the Online Campus, the student support section of our website. It is our goal to make sure that you enjoy your study and that you succeed. So welcome to learning for today s world, and congratulations on taking up the challenge of further education. 3 Introduction Our adult education qualifications are for people who are working in adult education and workplace training as a tutor or trainer. They provide nationally recognised qualifications incorporating useful skills and knowledge and are suitable if you need to upgrade your qualifications or complete professional development activities. We offer two qualifications: National Certificate in Adult Education & Training (Level 4) National Certificate in Adult Education & Training (Level 5). Alternatively, all unit standards can be completed individually if you do not want to complete a full qualification. 1
4 National Certificate in Adult Education & Training level 4 NEW ZEALAND ENVIRONMENT Qualification code: NC Level: 4 Credits: 40 This qualification is for people who are delivering and/or assessing adult education and training. It allows flexibility to accommodate different work, personal and skill requirements. Qualification structure To complete this quaification you must complete 40 credits at Level 4 and above. Compulsory unit Unit standard Title Level Credits 7091 Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand s cultural setting. 4 4 Elective Group A Select a minimm of 8 and up to a maximum of 36 credits. 6 National Certificate in Adult Education & Training level 5 NEW ZEALAND ENVIRONMENT Qualification code: NC Level: 5 Credits: 60 This qualification builds on the knowledge gained in the Level 4 Certificate. It is suitable for adult educators working in education and training, including polytechnics, wananga, private training establishments, on-job training in workplaces and distance learning. Qualification structure To complete this qualification you must complete 60 credits with a minimum of 40 credits at Level 5 or above. Compulsory unit All courses are required. Unit standard Title Level Credits Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand s cultural setting. Evaluate adult learning sessions. (Version 2) Design learning sessions for adults
7 Elective group a Select a minimum of 7 credits. Unit standard Title Level Credits Develop and facilitate individualised adult learning plans. Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adult learners. Coach adult learner(s) Elective group B Select courses to make the total credits for Elective Group A and Elective Group B to a minimum of 29 credits. Unit standard Title Level Credits Moderate assessment. Design and ealuate assessment materials
8 Elective group C Select courses to make the total credits from the compulsory courses and Groups A and B to a minimum of 60 credits. Unit standard Title Level Credits Prepare candidate(s) for assessment against standards. Verify evidence for assessment. Use standards to assess candidate performance. (Version 5) Deliver on-job training for adult trainees. Create and maintain a positive learning environment for adult learners
9 General information Assessment The learning materials contain activities that you can work your way through. There is one assessment task for each individual unit standard. This task includes written answers and also includes verification in the form of signed learner feedback sheets and observer/manager verification. Entry requirements To enrol in any of these courses, you need to be involved with training and have access to adult learners, either in a workplace or a community-based organisation. You cannot enrol in full qualifications. You must enrol in groups or modules, one at a time. You may enrol in the next group or module once you have completed the assessments in the group or module you are enrolled in. You may enrol in individual unit standards. However, before you enrol you should contact the tutor to ensure you can meet the unit requirements. English language You need to be able to read and write well in English, so you can write your assignments and understand written English course materials. Study time All units have a credit value. This helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit. So for the Level 4 National Certificate, which has 40 credits, you should plan to spend about 400 hours studying. For the Level 5 Certificate, which has 60 credits, you will need to allow 600 hours of study. 7
10 Fees All fee information is available on our website at Administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable $55 administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year. Overseas handling fee If you live overseas you will need to pay an extra, international handling charge. The amount of this fee will depend on where you live. The overseas handling fee will be added to your course fees when you enrol. Course materials Each unit standard comes in a separate package. If you enrol for more than one unit standard, they will be posted together in one package. Online Campus The Online Campus is the area of our website where you can: Access and submit assignments Link to web pages specific to your course, including frequently asked questions (FAQs), assessment hints, web resources, staff information and sometimes online quizzes and tutorials Communicate with other students in your course, and with your lecturer or tutor Access the library. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. 13 New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Record of Achievement If you are registered on the NZQA database, please provide your Record of Achievement number or your national student number on your Application for Enrolment form. If you are not registered, we will arrange this when you have finished your first unit standard. Any unit standards you gain through the year will be added to your Record of Achievement by March of the following year. You can access your Record of Achievement online or you can phone NZQA and ask for a copy of it. This unit standard is relevant to adult educators and trainers who plan individualised programmes of learning Deliver learning presentations For adult learners Level: 4 Credits: 8 You will learn how to prepare, deliver and review learning presentations for adult learners. This unit will be of interest to those presenting lectures and classes to groups of adult learners. 12
15 7097 Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adult learners Level: 5 Credits: 10 You will learn how to prepare, to facilitate and to review interactive learning sessions for adult learners using a range of methods, learning and teaching aids Deliver on-job training for adult Trainees Level: 4 Credits: 8 This unit is suitable for people who train adults one-on-one or in small groups on the job. As part of this unit you will need to work through on-job training cycles with adult learners and provide reports on these Coach adult learner(s) Level: 5 Credits: 8 This unit will teach you how to prepare, conduct and review adult coaching sessions Create and maintain a positive learning environment for adult learners Level: 4 Credits: 6 This unit is especially useful for those who run training sessions or work directly with learners. You will learn how to prepare, create, and maintain a positive learning environment for adult learners. 13
16 Generic Education and Training Domain: Assessment of learning 4098 Use standards to assess candidate performance (Version 5) Level: 4 Credits: 6 You will learn how to prepare for and conduct assessments; complete assessment administration; and review the assessment practice. This is particularly useful for people who assess the performance of others against competency standards, such as NZQA unit standards Prepare candidate(s) for assessment against standards) Level: 4 Credits: 3 This unit will teach you how to prepare candidates for the assessment process; determine candidates readiness for assessment; and review the preparation process Verify evidence for assessment Level: 4 Credits: 3 You will learn how to plan the verification process; verify a trainee s evidence; and complete the verification process Moderate assessment Level: 6 Credits: 8 You will learn how to: moderate assessment materials; verify assessment decisions; and follow moderation administration requirements. 17 11552 Design and evaluate assessment materials Level: 5 Credits: 8 This unit will teach you how to design and evaluate assessment materials such as questionnaires and observation checklists to assess candidate performance against competency-based standards Design learning sessions for adults Level: 5 Credits: 6 This unit will teach you how to define learning outcomes for adult learning sessions; select learning session content; plan delivery processes of learning sessions; design assessment activities for learning sessions; and plan reviews of learning sessions. This unit is relevant for people who develop the content of adult training sessions. Domain: Evaluation in adult education and training Evaluate adult training sessions (Version 2) Level: 5 Credits: 5 You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of learning session evaluation aims and methods; prepare for the evaluation of adult learning sessions; implement and analyse learning session evaluations; and review the evaluation process. It will suit adult educators, managers and administrators who are responsible for evaluations. 15
