2 Please join the Gregg County Extension Office as we celebrate Charlotte Hold s service to the Gregg County 4-H program before she moves to College Station. Her last day will be June 20th and we are holding an Appreciation Party on June 19th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gregg County Extension Office. There will be a basket for cards at the party as well as a basket in the Extension Office all week for those that cannot attend. We hope to see you there! Best Wishes As my family and I leave the East Texas area this month, we will leave with many great memories of Gregg County and the East District 5. I will cherish the time that my family and I have had with the Gregg County 4-H program and I am thankful that Gregg County is the place where my daughter, Delayna, was able to begin her involvement in 4-H. I have enjoyed watching so many wonderful 4-H members grow into youth leaders through the Gregg County 4-H program. 4-H is the best youth development program that I know of and we will continue to be involved in 4-H because of the awesome opportunities that are available. 4 The 2014 Texas 4-H Roundup will be held in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M University from June 9th to June 13th, The Gregg County Extension Agents encourage all Roundup participants to attend as many activities as possible. 6 Gold Star, Bronze Star and Silver Star Applications due by June 30, 2014 Applications are available at the Extension Office and are due by June 30, 2014, for the Gold Star, Silver Star and Bronze Star awards. Required for recognition is the completion and submission of a 4-H record book in the year the 4-H member applies for the Gold Star, Silver Star, or Bronze Star award. 4-H members shall apply for these awards and be interviewed by a panel of judges. Interviews will be on July 11, ***Additional Award Criteria*** Gold Star- Completion of 3 different projects and activities as well as demonstrated leadership and community service is also required. 4-H members must be at least 15 years of age and have completed at least 3 years in 4-H. Silver Star- Demonstrated active involvement in 4-H projects and activities. Eligible ages include year old 4-H members. Bronze Star Demonstrated active involvement in 4-H projects and activities. Eligible ages include 9-11 year old 4-H members. **Ages are based on the 4-H member s age as of August 31,2013** (Each of the three awards are intended to be received only once in a member s 4-H career). 4-H CLUB MANAGERS 4-H I Dare You Award nominations are due to the Extension Office by June 30, An award nomination consists of a letter of recommendation from the 4-H club manager. Please contact the Extension Office for specific guidelines for this award. Rookie of the Year applications are due from the 4-H club managers by June 30,

7 Club News 4-H Livestock Club Our meeting was held on May 8th. Club elections were held. The new officers are: President: Brayden Vancil Vice President: Julian Fierros Secretary: Skylar Stafford Treasurer: Ashley Alexander Reporter Austin Gibson Historian Dillon Gibson Council Delegate: Kayden Perry Our next meeting will be held on June 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. Spring Hill Club The club met at the Lois Jackson Park for our meeting this month. We had a good meeting, played Extreme Hopscotch and Kickball, and then had a picnic. Gregg Adult Leaders Association At the May 6th ALA meeting, the group voted to dissolve the Gregg ALA. This means the ALA funds (approximately $7,000) will be turned over to the Gregg County 4-H Council. The 4-Hers who participate in the County Council will determine how the county funds are spent. This is a great opportunity for all 4-Hers to get involved and help Gregg County 4-H grow! 4-H State Golf Challenge July 28, 2014 at the New Campus Course at Texas A&M University Registration is $180/team for 4-hers (must register individually as a 3 person team at $60 each or $80 for non 4-Hers). 9 Harvest Festival Junior Board of Directors Applications are available at the Extension Office for positions on the Junior Board of Directors for the Harvest Festival & Livestock Show. 4-H ers who are 14 years old and/or freshmen through seniors in High School are eligible to apply. The Junior Board provides leadership, assists with public relations of the Harvest Festival, and carries out responsibilities at the show and at the Crawfish Boil fundraiser. Applications are due to the Extension Office Wednesday, September 3, Attention: Past Harvest Festival Junior Board Members Past Harvest Festival Junior Board members who would like to apply to continue serving as a Junior Board Member must also submit a Junior Board application to the Gregg County Extension Office by Wednesday, September 3, Applications are available at the Extension Office. In order to be considered for renewal as a member of the Junior Board, you must turn in a Junior Board application by September 3, Steer Validation for Harvest Festival In order to show a steer at the 2014 Harvest Festival Livestock Show, you MUST TURN IN A STEER VALIDATION FORM BY JULY 1, Steer validation forms are available at the Gregg County Extension office. Lamb and Goat Validation for Harvest Festival The validation of lambs and goats for the 2014 Harvest Festival Livestock Show will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 7-11 a.m. at the Longview Fairgrounds. All lambs and goats MUST BE VALIDATED ON AUGUST 2, 2014 FOR THE HARVEST FESTIVAL LIVESTOCK SHOW. Contact the Gregg County Extension office for a validation form. Swine Validation for Harvest Festival In order to show swine at the 2014 Harvest Festival Livestock Show, you MUST TURN IN A SWINE VALIDATION FORM BY AUGUST 10, The swine validation form includes a record of the pigs ear notches. Swine validation forms are available at the Gregg County Extension office. Important: If you plan to show a heifer at a MAJOR LIVESTOCK SHOW (Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo, Heart O Texas Fair & Rodeo, and the State Fair of Texas) they will now be required to be validated through the Texas 4-H/FFA Heifer Validation Program.
