The right stage will save time and improve your positioning accuracy. Positioning of optical components and subsystems requires a high degree of precision and flexibility. Sometimes it is necessary to position a component within a micron or less while for other uses a large range of travel may be more important. Straightness of travel, lack of crosstalk and freedom from backlash, are all considerations which assume different levels of importance according to the application. We offer a large variety of positioning solutions. If you would like help in selecting the most appropriate positioning device for your application please call. Our experienced Applications Engineers are ready to help in any way they can. Most of our positioning stages and slides are compatible with industry standard mounting patterns. They may be incorporated into existing systems with ease. All of these stages are suitable for laboratory and OEM applications. We also offer a range of stages which are primarily intended for OEM use that offer performance and mounting options not found in our family of laboratory stages. Most stages can be prepared for vacuum compatible applications. Please call for more information on stages prepared for vacuum or low out gassing lubricant. The design and method of manufacture provides many benefits. First, there are far fewer parts than expected. The stages consist of a top plate and a bottom plate only. There are no intermediate plates and no bearing adapters to add to the tolerance build-up. Linear bearing ways are machined directly into the steel plates and honed to provide the highest possible precision. Second, the ball bearings are contacted by an extended curved surface which provides greater load capacity and higher precision than crossed-roller bearings. 347

When nothing but the best will do, these stages are the ones you need. Made from hardened stainless steel, they are extremely strong and durable. Our patented precision extended contact ball bearing ways provide the highest possible load capacity and resist damage due to impact or wear. Due to the low thermal expansion of stainless steel, they do not wander and are extremely stable during moderate temperature excursions. X, XY and Z stages are offered. Z motion stages are of the pivot type which provide an unobstructed elevation platform. For vacuum applications the use of stainless steel is recommended as it is less likely to outgas than other materials. These vacuum compatible stages have no blind holes, no surface finish and a non-silicone high vacuum lubricant is used in the assembly process. Three sizes cover most requirements. The footprint sizes are 65, 40 and 25mm each with convenient industry standard mounting holes. All of these stages are designed to be compact in order to fit into the smallest possible space. Metric screws are used throughout and the mounting patterns are optimized to the space available. 363

26 Long Travel Crossed Roller Bearing Stages Travel up to 120mm Lead screw driven Crossed roller bearings for high load capacity MANUAL POSITIONERS Stainless For applications that require long manual travel, these lead screw driven stages are the solution. They are constructed from aluminum using crossed roller bearings to provide high load capacity. Each stage is driven through use of a hand crank attached directly to the lead screw. These long travel stages are available as 200mm and 300mm footprints in X and XY configurations. The 200mm version has 100mm of travel and the 300mm footprint has 120mm of travel. All stages have convenient 1/4-20 tapped holes on inch centers or M6 tapped holes on 25mm centers for metric versions. 28 Aluminum Crossed-roller Bearing Stages Lightweight Crossed-roller bearings for heavy loads Superior straightness of travel 120, 65 and 40mm footprints Lockable MANUAL POSITIONERS Stainless In many manufacturing applications weight is at a premium. Aluminum stages are used when weight needs to be minimized. In order to maintain the required accuracy precision crossed-roller bearings are mounted into the machined aluminum. Three sizes cover most applications. The 120mm stages are best for heavy load applications. While the 65mm size is ideal for most general equipment applications. A 40mm range provides more compact mounting for use in instruments where space is at a premium. All sizes have inch or metric hole patterns which enable them to be built as compactly as possible. Travel is listed in the table on page 381 for each stage but can be extended slightly beyond this range if necessary. 37 Stainless Aluminum Linear Ball Bearing Stages Lightweight Precision ball bearings Straightness of travel <3microns 65 and 25mm footprint 1/4-20 (M6) hole pattern Horizontal and vertical motion Micrometer driven Lockable Aluminum stages are best used when weight must be minimized and the stability of steel is not needed. In order to maintain the required accuracy ball bearings are factory pre-loaded by four equally spaced stainless steel rods that are machined into the aluminum stage to ensure precision and load capacity. Two sizes are offered. The 65mm size is suitable for most laboratory applications having a two inch square 1/4-20 hole pattern for mounting to industry standard bases. The 25mm size is compatible with the mini-system previously described (page 272). It has a metric (M2) hole pattern on 10mm centers and provides 6mm of travel. 65mm Aluminum Ball Bearing Stages 382

45 Stainless Dovetail stages are so called because of the cross sectional shape of the slide. They have been used for many years as a simple and Rack and Pinion Long, fast travel Rack & pinion drive Ideal for focus and field adjustment 65 and 25mm sizes provide up to 130mm of travel 1/4-20 (M6) hole pattern Lockable When longer ranges of travel are required conventional stages may not be sufficient. For imaging applications it is often necessary to scan a detector over the field and focus volume of image space. These, long travel, dovetail stages provide the perfect solution. They may be driven by rack and pinion over a large distance without losing their alignment. The coarse drive enables rapid positioning of the stage. Once set in position the stage may be locked by means of a clamp lever so it will not move. If it is required to provide fine movement our conventional stages have compatible mounting holes and can be attached to these stages. The 65mm stages are compatible with 1/4inch or M6, industry standard, mounting patterns and are offered as X, XY and XYZ stages. These preset stages utilize precision dovetail slides and are adjusted by means of a special key or Allen wrench. The vertical slides have a built-in thumb-wheel adjuster. Once set, the stages can be locked in place and the key removed to prevent inadvertent adjustment. X, Z, XY, XZ and XYZ combinations are offered in four footprint sizes which match our conventional stages.
