3 WHY LIVERPOOL? Liverpool s regional economy is one of the fastest growing in England, according to the latest Government data. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) rank the City Region ninth out of the 39 LEP areas, and the only Northern LEP area in the top 10. Independent research company Capital Economics hailed the city as the best region in the UK for improved productivity per head of population. Under Mayor Anderson s leadership, we have established the first Mayoral Development Corporation outside London with direct control over resources for investment in economic development, skills and infrastructure. As part of this, the City has established a new Enterprise Zone (EZ) covering part of the City Centre and Dockland fringe area. In the past 15 years, Liverpool has changed. Recognisable the world over, Liverpool s iconic waterfront is the spiritual heart of the city. It s also the gateway to Liverpool s flourishing Commercial District: an industrious neighbourhood where, historically, the city s maritime, law and finance companies set down their stunning headquarters. They re still here - still trading with the world. Still forging new partnerships from Shanghai to San Francisco. But, these days, they re joined by IT companies, management consultants and tech start ups. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Liverpool s downtown hub is not just a stunning set piece of grand mercantile buildings: it s the thriving heart of a resurgent city economy. The zone contains the greatest concentration of employment in the city region, and extends to the Stanley Dock complex - currently being transformed into a leisure and tourism playground of four star hotels - the 36 million Titanic Hotel and Conference Centre and waterside apartments. Since 2007, the St Paul s Square area close to Old Hall Street has witnessed over 170 million invested in new and refurbished office stock attracting major international firms. To the north of the zone, Pumpfields and Northshore enjoy the perfect position: midway between the Commercial District and the proposed 5.5billion Liverpool Waters development. Together, these sites represent some of the city s most enticing redevelopment potential. MEET THE NEIGHBOURS Liverpool s office sector is in great shape. Our existing, handsome office buildings are now augmented by slick new office stock, purpose built for the 21st century and enjoying some of the fastest fibre-optic speeds in the country. The response has been phenomenal. Over 121 firms signed contracts for new office space in the Commercial District in Office take up in 2014 was 383,341 sq ft, 21% higher than in 2013, and over 120,000 sq ft more than in International law firm Hampton Hughes and global insurance broker and risk management consultant Mercer joined established firms in the zone which include: Hill Dickinson, the UK Passport Office, Investec Wealth & Investment Ltd and shipping giant Maersk. The newly refurbished Exchange Station is home to leading Swedish bank Handelsbanken, engineering designers Mouchel and Integrated Building Management. To the south of the zone is the city s largest tourist attraction, the Albert Dock. Rising from the world s first enclosed dock system are symbols of the city s leading role as a leisure and tourism magnet - Tate Liverpool, the Beatles Story and Maritime Museum. Nearby is the Arena & Convention Centre, next to which is being built the city s new Exhibition Centre and Pullman brand hotel. We ve been trading in the heart of Liverpool for 800 years.
