1 DIRECTOR OF SPORT For September 2016 The Post We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified and experienced teacher of PE/Coach of Games to lead a very successful, hard-working and well equipped department. The school has an excellent reputation in the locality, at county level and nationally in the major team games. Sport therefore plays a major role in the life of Hymers College, and for this reason the post is extremely significant and important to the school as a whole. The post provides the opportunity for the successful candidate to oversee the sports provision for all pupils, to build on the many successes and to play a crucial role in the management and development of the department. The Director of Sport has overall responsibility for sport, both curricular and extra-curricular. Applicants should be experienced practitioners and have experience of coaching at least one of the school s major sports to a high level. It would also be an advantage to have taught academic PE at GCSE and A Level. The post will entail leading a strong and large department and the person appointed will therefore need to be an effective administrator. This is a high profile position, both within and outside the school. The Director of Sport will be involved in the promotion and marketing of Sport, in continuing and building relationships with outside agencies and in liaising effectively with parents. The PE Department As mentioned above, the school enjoys a good deal of success in major games. It provides the facilities and opportunities for all pupils to maximize their potential and for individuals and teams to achieve major successes. 2 Cricket squares (4) Cricket nets (grass 6) Orienteering course Tennis Courts (10) 25m Swimming pool Football pitches (3) The facilities are shared by the Junior and Senior Schools and are in constant use. The Physical Education programme, however, does not just cater for those who excel in the major team games. It provides opportunities for all to achieve and experience success in a range of different activities and at all levels, which will give them enjoyment and a sense of fulfilment. The following paragraphs include a description of current Sports practice, but this should not be seen as a blueprint for the future. It is hoped that the new post-holder will lead Sport in new, exciting directions. The school operates on a 6 day timetable and all pupils up to Year 11 have one lesson of PE and an afternoon of games (2 hours) per cycle. We offer athletics, badminton, basketball, dance, football, health-related fitness, orienteering, rounders, softball, swimming, short-tennis and volleyball in our PE curriculum. The major games of rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis and athletics are taught in games lessons with the addition of football in the Junior School. Physical Education is taught at GCSE and Advanced Level (Edexcel). Selection for school teams follows on from participation in games and extra-curricular time for boys and girls. The nature of education makes schools very competitive in all aspects of their curriculum and sport is no exception to this. At Hymers College we take great pride in our pupils of all ages performing at the highest levels in competitive sport and their sporting commitments in school provide the foundation for representing their county and in many cases their country. In recent years we have produced internationals in a wide variety of sports from hockey to badminton and from fencing to ice hockey. Although it is pleasing to have talented students within the school who demonstrate dedication, talent and commitment at the very highest level, we take equal pride in the extensive fixture lists offered to all age groups, from Year 4 through to Year 13, which enable all pupils to represent the school midweek and at weekends. To achieve these standards we play many of the best schools in the North of England, and compete successfully in national competitions: Nat West Cup (Rugby), Rosslyn Park Sevens / North of England Sevens (Rugby), National Schools Hockey, Netball, Schools Cup (Athletics), Bunbury Cup / ECB/ESCA (Cricket) and Independent Schools Tennis. In recent years we have broadened our sporting curriculum by offering Boys Hockey, as well as encouraging pupils to participate in school squash, badminton and golf teams. In 2014 the Independent School Sport magazine recognized Hymers as the 26 th best independent school for sport in the country. In recent years our teams have reached national finals in a wide variety of sports including hockey, netball, squash, badminton and, most recently, golf. The Department is made up of four PE specialists, a Head of Hockey (appointed April 2015), a Head of Rugby (appointed September 2015), as well as a large number of non-specialist staff 2

3 plus part-time coaches brought in to assist with the coaching of games. The school has also recently appointed a new Head of Junior School Sport who will start work in January The department is fortunate in the time that it has allocated to the subject and the number of specialist and enthusiastic members of staff (full-time and part-time), who devote much time and effort to providing opportunities for the pupils. Job Description Director of Sport The Director of Sport is directly responsible to the Headmaster. It is expected that he or she will play a major role in the coaching of games at the school. The Director of Sport will be responsible for sport in three main respects: Leadership and Management, Promotion and Administration. Leadership and Management Drawing up, implementing and monitoring plans for the strategic development of sport and sporting facilities at the school; Responsibility for staffing and management of the school s programme of sport in liaison with members of staff i/c of sports; Responsibility for the management and development of all sports facilities and equipment at the school, liaising closely with the Operations Manager and Grounds staff; Responsibility for the professional welfare and in-service training of members of the department, including probationary, new and student teachers; (including the induction of NQT s); Responsibility for ensuring that all Hymers College sports teams represent the school appropriately and understand the importance of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship; Liaison with pastoral staff when necessary; Chairing regular departmental meetings; Responsibility for all expenditure within the department; Responsibility for the furniture and fabric within the department; Co-operation with other Departments in cross-curricular activities; Management of all professional coaching at the school; 3

4 Liaison with the Head of Academic PE in the management of the Better Movers and Thinkers curriculum throughout all areas of physical activity; Liaison with the Head of Junior School Sport. Promotion Communicating results and news about the school s sporting achievements to the public (via the school s Development Office where appropriate) and within the school (arranging the production of sports reports for school assemblies). Managing the sports page on the website; Promoting clear, prompt and effective communication about fixtures, training and policies with parents, pupils and staff; Encouraging and helping to organise sports tours in line with school policy; Representing Hymers at meetings with county, regional, national governing bodies, conferences etc. Managing the Hymers College Sport Twitter account and to ensure the Sport and Games page on the school s VLE and Intranet (named Schoogle), is up to date. Administration Working with staff i/c games to co-ordinate the drawing up of suitable fixtures; Setting and monitoring the budget for sport in conjunction with the Director of Finance and in consultation with the Head of Academic PE and staff i/c games; Ensuring that Health and Safety standards and governing body rules and regulations are monitored and maintained in all sports; Attending Health and Safety committee meetings; Creating, implementing and monitoring a code of practice on sport ensuring a consistent approach across all sports; Monitoring and maintaining standards of dress, kit and conduct in all sports and developing the relationship with Grays International, including an online shop; Attending the Colours committee; 4

5 Attending the parents fund-raising committee meetings (SOHCS), and assisting with functions; Ensuring that transport, hospitality, officials, grounds and first aid cover are organised for fixtures in conjunction with the staff i/c of sports. Person Specification Director of Sport The successful candidate will have all or most of the following: A passion for all sport; Wide experience and a successful record within educational and / or sporting environments; A clear vision of how to develop Hymers College sport; Strong leadership and management skills the capacity to inspire both colleagues and pupils; Ability to work with others, motivating, listening, negotiating and problem solving; Excellent organisational and administrative skills, coupled with imagination, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness; Sense of humour.
