1 Job Title: Teacher of Physics and Electronics with a TLR2 ( 2586) available as subject coordinator Electronics for an experienced candidate MPS/UPS Outer London BACKGROUND INFORMATION 1. Bexley The London Borough of Bexley has a population of over 220,000 with 62 primary schools and 16 secondary schools. Through tests set by the Local Authority about 20% of Bexley Year 6 pupils, as well as pupils from outside the Borough, are deemed selective. Selective places are available in four Grammar Schools. Two single sex and two co-educational. 2. Beths Beths Grammar School is a popular selective Boys Grammar School with an oversubscribed mixed sixth form. It acquired Academy status on 1 October While Beths is a traditional grammar school, it is geared for the 21 st century and the demands modern working life will put on our students. We enjoy exceptional academic success, high quality facilities and have a well-earned reputation for excellence. Our goal is to create leaders who are well-rounded individuals, performing to the best of their abilities and progressing towards the height of their ambition. The school moved to its present site in A new IT facility was opened in 2003 and in 2005 we added a Science Centre, Language Laboratory, new Dining Hall and Kitchen as well as an extended Sixth Form Centre. More recent capital projects have included major refurbishment of the staff room, Design & Technology and Performing Arts areas and in 2009 a new suite of five Language Teaching Rooms was built. Our new reception and administration centre was completed in 2013, which freed up space for additional teaching rooms elsewhere in the school. This was necessary to accommodate an extra form of intake from September The school benefits form extensive playing fields and a superb sports hall. We are currently bidding for funding to upgrade the Learning Resource Centre and Post 16 facilities. Maths, Science and Design Technology have been specialist subjects since we became a Technology College in In 2005 we were identified as one of the first High Performing Specialist Schools and in January 2006 took on a Second Specialism in Languages. In September 2008 our Headteacher became a National Leader in Education (NLE) with Beths Grammar a National Support School (NSS). We have provided support to one of Bexley s non-selective schools which was later judged good by Ofsted in September 2013, and are currently supporting a Bexley primary school. In April 2009 we became a Leadership Partner School (LPS). In 2010, we gained the International School Award, and we have been a Confucius Classroom School since 2010 (a hub school in developing Chinese Mandarin). 3. Curriculum Our students enjoy a balanced and varied curriculum. There is a compressed KS3 course in Science, Computing and Design Technology. We offer four Modern Foreign Languages including Chinese Mandarin. Some GCSEs are completed in Year 10. In Year 11 we offer a more personalised curriculum

2 with several subjects offered at AS Level. The large majority of our Year 11 students are taking one AS Level whilst some are taking two, and a few three. The outstanding range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities we offer are an integral part of life at Beths. In addition to sport, music and performing arts we run a wide variety of clubs and societies. All Students in Year 8 attend the very popular school camp. This offers a week s adventure in the New Forest with outdoor activities to encourage problem solving and leadership qualities. 4. Achievement Examination results have improved year on year and our value added scores are excellent. At A Level we always achieve a 99 or 100% pass rate. This summer 21 students achieved at least 3 A*/A grades and 56% of grades were A* to B. For the first time our top three students all achieved at least 4A* grades. At GCSE 57% of our students achieved at least 5A*-A grades with 99% achieving 5+ A*-C grades including English and Maths. Our Year 11 students also sat a total of 138 full AS Levels. All students are offered careers guidance starting in year 7, including psychometric testing. There is input through PSHCE lessons and access to a wide range of up to date information in the school s Learning Resource Centre. When entering the sixth form students receive additional guidance on their career and university choices. They also benefit from a UCAS Personal Tutor and one-to-one careers meetings. Some 85 per cent of Beths students go on to higher education with many attending Russell Group Universities. In September 2012 the school was judged to be Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted. This inspection was one of the first under the new Ofsted framework and came almost exactly five years after our previous Outstanding Ofsted. The School was awarded the London Evening Standard Academic Excellence Award (Secondary) for Beths Grammar School prides itself on its well targeted emotional and academic support for all students within its care through the pastoral system and our Individual Educational Needs (IEN) department. Peer Mentors are assigned to each tutor group and are easily approachable by any students who may prefer to speak to another student rather than an adult. However, if a student does have a problem or query that the peer mentor is unable to help with, each student is a member of a form group and their Form Tutor is the first point of call if they have any issues. If the Form Tutor is unable to deal with the problem, then the Head of Year will become involved. Where the Head of Year is also unable to help, a Deputy Head is assigned to each key stage and will become involved if they are required.

3 Departmental Information The Science Department was judged to be Outstanding under an Ofsted Science Survey Inspection in January Science is a dynamic and forward-looking department that is involved in a number of initiatives as part of the School s Technology Specialism. These include a Science and Engineering Club which focuses on gifted and talented students amongst several other subject-specific extra-curricular and revision clubs. The department is also involved in enrichment activities in partnership with a cluster group of local primary schools. At GCSE results are impressive. In the Sixth Form, Science is a very strong area with students who complete A Level courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Electronics achieving a high proportion of top grades. We also encourage them to participate in enrichment activities such as the Science Olympiads where they have performed most creditably. We are keen to continue to build on this tremendous achievement by further extending and developing our enrichment programme in Science. The Science Department currently has twelve teachers with a good balance of specialists in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The department is led by the Head of Science with Heads of Subjects having responsibility for the separate sciences and there is good support provided by a team of four Science Technicians. The KS3 results for 2014 were outstanding with 100% of students achieving L6+ and 57% level 7+. GCSE results are strong across the Sciences. In of our Year 11 students took Biology, Chemistry and Physics with excellent results whilst 36 students taking Core and Additional Science. Subject GCSE A*-A GCSE A*-E Biology 50% 98% Chemistry 48% 98% Physics 45% 95% Core Science 28% 100% Additional Science 25% 94% At A Level in 2014, 100% A*-E was achieved in all subjects with consistently strong A*/B percentages. Subject A Level A*/B Biology 68% Chemistry 53% Physics 53% Electronics 58% Our students take their Design & Technology GCSE in Year 10 and many of our most able students choose the Electronic Products option. The AS Electronics is then one of those offered in Year 11 as well as being offered in Year 12 and in % achieved A/B grade. Consequently, some students complete A Level Electronics in Year 12 and others in Year 13. The Science Department is very well resourced. There are ten first class science laboratories, fully equipped preparation rooms, offices, a staff workroom, which houses a departmental photocopier, and extensive storage areas. All laboratories are fully networked with interactive whiteboard technology. One laboratory is specifically equipped to teach electronics and has its own dedicated set of 15 laptops.

4 The Science Department also has a set of 15 laptops with wireless capability and a wide range of data logging. The teaching staff are ably supported by a team of four experienced Science technicians. In Science KS3 students are taught by specialist teachers for four 50 minutes periods a week. Year 7 students are taught by one teacher whilst each Year 8 group is usually taught by two teachers. Our Year 9 students are taught by specialist teachers in each of the three Sciences and start the GCSE course. KS4 students follow the OCR Gateway specification. The large majority opt to take the three separate Sciences and are taught by specialist teachers for six periods a week. One or two Additional Science groups are taught normally by one teacher for three periods a week. Large numbers of students take Science courses in the Sixth Form. In both Physics and Electronics we follow the OCR exam board. There are currently three AS and two A Level groups in Physics with two AS and one A Level groups in Electronics. Consequently, we are looking for a teacher able to teach both Physics and Electronics to A Level as well as GCSE Physics and contributing to KS3 Science. For an experienced candidate the post of Subject Co-ordinator Electronics (TLR2L 2586) would be available.
