You will learn and practice Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, conversation and composition. 2 2 IME (AENDANCE) Learning a language is different than learning a subject matter in that it involves acquiring and practicing a skill. herefore, daily and active participation is VERY IMPORAN. You can only participate if you come to class. If you miss class you miss points. Each class is worth a certain amount of points. Only make up work that is associated with an excused absence will be accepted Criteria for excused absences: Documented illness (Dr. s note) Religious holiday Family emergency Other verifiable documented emergency. Still, you will not get full credit; group work and oral assignments done as a normal part of the class cannot be made up. Punctuality is a virtue admired through life. Be here on time and ready. It requires that you spend a significant amount of time studying outside of class. You should spend at least one hour each day reviewing the day s material, and preparing the readings and other assignments for the next class. Internet Access You must enroll in a web-based course management system called ADELANE UNO SUPERSIE; it is a REQUIRED component of the course. A book code (purchased in shrink-wrap with your text) and a working account are necessary. (a) Chapter Exams: here are no make-up exams. he lowest score of the 6 chapter exams will be dropped. (b) Final Exam: You have to take the final exam on the scheduled date. I m sorry I cannot make exceptions. he final exam is cumulative. he comprehensive final exam will assess what you have learned in terms of grammar rules, vocabulary, written, and oral communication skills. (c) Participation, In-Class Assignments and Homework: Daily class participation is of utmost importance in a beginning language class. Oral activities and group tasks aim to help you improve your oral fluency and confidence in speaking Spanish. herefore, SPEAK IN SPANISH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Each in-class and homework assignment (oral and written) is worth aprox points. he greater the effort, the better the grade. (d) Workbook: he workbook is part of your homework assignments. 4 SPA 1 Spring 09 (Jiménez-Díaz) 4 MORE ABOU HE COURSE & INFORMAION ON HELPFUL RESOURCES his course is based on the philosophy that students (and my) class time is best spent using Spanish, that is, listening to and speaking with me and your classmates, listening to and viewing a variety of audiovisual materials and reading. For that reason, you are expected to read the selfexplanatory grammar explanations as well as to complete follow-up exercises in the workbook. I will gladly answer questions about the assignments in class, but I will spend the majority of the class time providing you with activities through which you can practice what you have read and learned, and with opportunities to use the language in meaningful ways. You can best learn Spanish by coming to class on a regular basis and by being actively involved in classroom activities. You are not expected to speak perfect Spanish, so don't be afraid to open you mouth and make mistakes!
