2 Introduction This brochure illustrates the career opportunities for nurses in Derbyshire Health United. Whether you start your journey as a Nurse Advisor or further along the pathways there are many opportunities to expand your skills in areas ranging from Clinical to Management, Audit or Training. DHU have an extensive training team with clinical experts in NHS 111 Pathways, Primary Care, Out of Hours and Urgent Care to continually train, educate, coach and mentor you throughout your journey and career with us. DHU also have access to NHS East Midlands funding through the Learning Beyond Registration and Flexible funding accounts and will support applications from DHU staff towards academic courses to assist in your development. Many of these courses are at level 7 ( Masters) and can be accessed through local universities. Courses frequently accessed by our practitioners include Minor Conditions, Advanced Physical Assessment and Consultation Skills (APACS), Non Medical Prescribing. Here are some comments from staff who have progressed along the pathway. I really enjoyed the course the trainers were very supportive and had a lot of knowledge. This has given me the opportunity to develop many different assessment skills, to be able to diagnosis patients who attend OOH with minor conditions. Minor Condition Nurse In my 7 busy years at DHU I have progressed from Nurse Advisor, through Pathways, becoming a coach and auditor which enabled me to gain my current position as Clinical Shift Manager. I have also been part of the Basic Life Support training team, Pathways training team and presently am completing the Acute Physical Assessment and Consultation skills Course at level 7 at Sheffield Hallam University. This will be the second course at level 7 supported by DHU, and I am presently awaiting to see if I have been successful on the Medical Non prescribing course. I feel there has always been a new challenge at DHU and my time is never bland! Clinical Shift Manager PAGE ONE

3 Nurse Advisor Nurse Advisor Pathway Your role will have a major focus on the clinical pathways within the NHS 111 Service with the addition of supporting non-clinical staff. There are education and management opportunities with an option of further progression. First level registered nurse with a broad range of experience Successful completion of Pathways course. To be discussed at annual IPR and training meetings. Developing from novice to expert with the opportunity to take on additional pathways roles; training, coaching and audit. Other opportunities may arise within the Clinical Training Team. You may wish to progress along either a managerial or clinical route. 4 Minor Conditions Nurse Minor Conditions Nurse Pathway Your role will be to support clinicians in Out of Hours with triage of walk-in patients, assistance with investigations and care of patients if required. In addition to this, you will treat and discharge patients within the range of conditions that you have been assessed as competent to see. First level registered nurse with a broad range of experience and successful completion of Pathways course. Relevant experience as a Nurse Advisor. To be discussed at annual IPR and training meetings. Developing from novice to expert within the Minor Conditions Nurse role with an opportunity to progress to the Associate Nurse pathway. Continued education and mentorship Increase range of conditions to see and treat Full range of conditions see and treat Mentorship of junior staff Continued education Development opportunities to progress to Associate Nurse Associate Nurse Preparation for Increasing Accountability and Responsibility Minor Illness degree module Undertaking postgraduate modules at level 7 relevant to the area of practice. Introduction to role Work within limits of stated list of conditions to see and treat Ongoing mentorship PAGE THREE

5 Associate Nurse Associate Nurse Pathway Your role will include working as a Minor Condition Nurse whilst increasing your knowledge and skills. This will entail additional training, support and mentorship from the Clinical Training Team and senior colleagues. First level registered nurse Successful completion of the DHU Minor Conditions Nurse programme (parts 1 and 2) Following the minor illness module further development with relevant postgraduate modules e.g. Advanced Physical Assessment and Consultation Skills. Preparation for Increasing Accountability and Responsibility Mentorship of student nurse Increase autonomy in minor conditions role Undertaking postgraduate modules at level 7 relevant to the area of practice. Expert in Minor Conditions Nurse Still increase in skills and physical examination history taking Education and mentorship Expert in Minor Conditions Nurse Signed competent as an Associate Nurse in all areas of practice. Move to Nurse with support. Working as a Minor Conditions Nurse whilst increase in skills through education and mentorship. Nurse PAGE FOUR

6 Nurse Nurse Pathway Your role will have a major focus on clinical aspects with continuing education, mentorship for progression. You will be supported to work in a complex care environment with other multidisciplinary professionals. First level registered nurse Autonomous practice with degree level qualifications to support your practice. Works autonomously with support where required Continuing training, mentorship and education Provide support to junior staff/students Advanced practice Qualify non-medical prescribing Provide support to junior staff/students Progression to Senior Nurse Discussed at your annual IPR and within your training reviews. Novice to expert means progression from Nurse to Senior Nurse. This will entail continuing mentorship, education and support. You will also take on mentorship roles for junior staff and students. Senior Nurse Preparation for Increasing Accountability and Responsibility Postgraduate modules at level 7 Non-medical prescribing at either level 6 or 7 is essential for progression to Senior Nurse Induction to role Work with support Ongoing training, education and mentorship PAGE FIVE

7 Senior Nurse Senior Nurse Pathway Your role will have a major focus on clinical with the addition of education and management components working in a complex care environment with other multidisciplinary professionals. First level registered nurse Degree level 7 qualifications supporting your autonomous practice Discussed at your annual IPR. You will develop through from novice through proficient to expert within the role of Senior Nurse. You may take on additional roles within the role of Senior Nurse e.g. audit needs, lead for specialism e.g. Infection Control. You may aspire to move into a role with increasing responsibility team leader, clinical operations lead etc. Preparation for Increasing Accountability and Responsibility Undertaking postgraduate modules at level 7 relevant to the area of practice Participation in projects of research if opportunities arise. Induction to role Confirm role expectations Work with support Ongoing training, education and mentorship Works autonomously without supervision Continuing training, mentorship and education Provide support to junior staff/students Advanced practice Continuous professional development Participate in development of policies, Standard Operating Procedures, audits etc. Opportunity to progress to other roles Training Clinical Lead Audit Nurse Specialist Nurse e.g. Infection Control PAGE SIX
