1 Recording a Video with Kaltura CaptureSpace Introduction Kaltura CaptureSpace is a desktop recording application that allows you to record your own video content via your computer. You can combine multiple source inputs, including audio, webcam(s), screen-recording, and PowerPoint. In order to record audio, you will need a microphone (built into a laptop or an external USB mic). If you want to record video of yourself or of a demonstration, you will need a webcam (Kaltura can support up to three webcam feeds). Kaltura is available for use by all Kent State University faculty, staff, and students (although this guide is meant for faculty). Please note that Kaltura CaptureSpace is currently in pilot and technical support is limited at this time. Section I: Planning Your Video Before recording, take the time to plan out your video, using the following best practices as guidelines: 1. Determine the video s role in your course (e.g. content delivery/lecture, demonstration of procedures, feedback for students, etc.) and how it aligns with learning objectives. 2. Determine whether video is the best medium. If the visuals are not integral to your message, you may find audio or written content more effective. 3. Keep your videos short (no more than minutes if possible) and focused. Break up longer content into shorter, standalone videos. 4. Prepare a script or notes to control the length and to help stay on topic. A script can also be uploaded with the video to make it more accessible and to cater to different learning styles. 5. Present important points at near the beginning of the video to counteract viewer abandonment rates. 6. Avoid including information that may change (such as dates, textbook page numbers, etc.) so that you can reuse the video for future course sections. 7. Maintain a natural, conversational tone and address viewers directly to heighten viewer interest and engagement. 8. Plan how to strategically integrate the video content with other learning materials for enhanced student engagement. 2 Section II: Installing the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder Before you create your first recording, you must download the CaptureSpace software. If you have already downloaded the software, skip to Section III. 1. Open your web browser and navigate to 2. Click the FlashLine Login button in the top right corner and select Login from the drop-down menu. 3. Type in your FlashLine username and password, then click Sign In. 4. Click Add New in the top right and select Record a Presentation from the drop-down menu. 2

3 5. You can download the CaptureSpace software for Windows or Mac. Click the appropriate Download link for your computer. 6. Save the installer file to your computer, then run the installer and follow the prompts to install the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder. Section III: Recording with the CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder 1. Launch the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder software on your computer. This can be done through video.kent.edu > Add New > Record a Presentation (must be logged into the website) or by double-clicking your Kaltura CaptureSpace desktop icon. OR Note: When launching CaptureSpace through video.kent.edu, your web browser will pop up a dialog box asking you to confirm that you want to launch the application. These messages will vary by browser (see next page for screenshots). 3

4 Launch Application dialog box: Mozilla Firefox Launch Application dialog box: Google Chrome 2. The Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder application will launch. Click Presentations & Lectures to select your sources (or you can quick-select the Screen, Screen & Webcam, Webcam, or Voice options below). Note: If you want to incorporate PowerPoint or multiple webcams, you must select Presentations & Lectures. 4

5 3. Use the Recording Options panel to select your webcam, screen capture, presentation (PowerPoint), and sound options. You can mix and match these options as desired (select None or Off for options you do not want to include). If you select Presentation, a browse button will appear. Click the Browse button, then locate and select the PowerPoint you want to use. You will see preview windows for your webcam and screen capture or PowerPoint presentation on this screen as well. 4. When you are ready, click the Record button in the bottom right corner. A dialog box will pop up and count you down, then the recording will begin. 5. Present your content. While recording, you can click the Kaltura CaptureSpace tile in your taskbar to bring up the menu. From here you can pause or cancel the recording. You can also use the Draw feature to annotate the screen. Click the Draw button and a new toolbar will appear to allow you to adjust the drawing options, including color, shapes, etc. Click Done to close. 6. When you are finished recording, click the Kaltura CaptureSpace tile in your taskbar to bring up the menu, then click Done. The recording will stop. 5

6 7. A new screen will appear. You can play back and edit your video using the timeline at the top of the page and the Trim and Clip buttons on the left. 8. When you are finished editing, click the Done button at the bottom of the screen. 9. A new screen will appear. Adjust the name, description, and tags for the video as desired. Then click the Upload button to upload it to the video.kent.edu server. 10. Once the video is uploaded, click the Close button to return to the CaptureSpace home screen. At this point, you can record another video or close the application. Section IV: Linking to Your Video in Blackboard Videos uploaded from CaptureSpace will be marked as Private. These videos can only be accessed by you until you link to them in Blackboard. By linking to your videos in this way, you are allowing only students enrolled in your course to view them. 1. Log into Blackboard Learn at or through FlashLine and enter your course. 2. Navigate into the folder or content area in which you want to place the video. 6

7 3. In the Action Bar across the top of the screen, click Build Content, then select Kaltura Media from the drop-down menu. Note: Edit Mode must be ON in order to add content. 4. You will see a gallery of your Kaltura videos. Locate the video to which you want to link and click the Select button. 7

8 5. You will be taken to the Create Mashup Item page, where you can: 1. Enter a title for the video link. 2. Enter a description for the video link. 3. Attach supporting files or documents. 4. Set standard options, including show/hide, track statistics, and date and time restrictions 6. Once you have set your desired options, click the Submit button to finish. Your students can now view your video from within your Blackboard course. 8
