1 Blackboard Help Grant Guest Access to your Blackboard Course Overview: By default, your course Blackboard website is restricted to enrolled students only. You can make your course website available to prospective students by turning on guest access. This page shows you how to enable/disable the Guest Access features. In this handout you will: Allow guest access to your course o Step One Set overall Guest Access for your Course o Step Two Set default Guest Access settings for different types of areas o Step Three Allows Guest Access to the more specific buttons on your course navigation bar Notes: Disable Guest Access to your course To get into your Blackboard site, you need to know your USC Network Username and current password. You will use the VIP system, which is where USC students register for classes, pay their fees, check their grades, etc. If you have forgotten your PIN, students should contact the Registrar's Office at Faculty and staff members should contact their Human Resources representative. Allow Guest Access to Your Course 1. Login to Blackboard at Notice the Preview button, which allows guests to access your site. This is the button which will allow prospective students to access your course site AFTER you engage the following steps. 2. Select the course which you would like to allow potential students or guests to access. Page 1

2 STEP ONE - Sets overall Guest Access for your course. 1. After logging in and clicking on the course, the course window opens up, click on the Control Panel link in the lower left hand corner of the page. 2. Under the Course Options heading, click on Settings 3. On the Settings page, click Guest Access. Page 2

3 4. On the Guest Access page, click YES to allow guest access and then, click SUBMIT to finalize. 5. Click OK. 6. Go back to the Control Panel for this particular course. STEP TWO Set default Guest Access settings for different types of areas. 1. Select Manage Tools, which is also located in the Course Options section of the Control Panel. Page 3

4 2. On the Manage Tools page, select Tool Availability. 3. From the Tool Availability page, confirm that each type of area you want available for Guest Access is checked. Place a check in each empty box under Available, Allow Access and Allow Observer. Once the boxes are checked, click Submit at the bottom right hand corner of this page. Note: The grayed out areas (gray dots) are areas that are not accessible. Page 4

5 4. The next page which pops up after clicking Submit indicates a successful receipt of your selections, click OK. 5. Go back to the Control Panel for this particular course. STEP THREE - Allows Guest Access to the more specific buttons on your course navigation bar. 1. Click Manage Course Menu under Course Options in the Control Panel menu. 2. The Manage Course Menu page allows you to click on the Content Area section at the top of the page. A drop down menu appears. To allow Guest Access to your Syllabus, select Syllabus from that menu. There are many selections which you can choose from in this area, so choose the specific section which you are interested in allowing Guest Access. Page 5

6 3. To allow access to your course syllabus on the Set Area Properties page, first you will select Syllabus from the drop down menu. a. Select Allow Guest Access. b. Select Allow Observer Access. c. Make sure that the Make Available for Students is checked, too. d. Click on Submit in the bottom right hand corner of this page. 4. There are other choices in the Content Area drop down menu including the default listings: Assignments, Course Documents, Course Information and Lectures to name a few. In addition, any course button items that you added independent of these will appear in the drop down menu. Choose the areas in which you would like to allow Guest Access. Perform the steps listed in item 3 above. Page 6

7 Disable Guest Access to Your Course 1. TO DISABLE GUEST ACCESS Return to the Blackboard login at Login and select the designated course in which you would like to Disable Guest Access. Go to the Control Panel. Under Course Options click on Settings. 2. Select the Guest Access 3. The Guest Access page allows you to check the NO option to disable Guest Access to your course site. Click Submit once you are satisfied with your selection. Page 7
