ECHO360 PERSONAL CAPTURE Echo360 - Personal Capture allows a User an easy way to capture, edit, publish, and view lectures from their personal computers. Users and/or Instructors can use Echo360 to capture and record their lectures in real time and post them on a website for viewing by those who have access. Recorded lectures are stored on the server and can be accessed 24/7. Echo360 provides a great learning tool for students so they can review recorded class material anytime - anywhere, as long as they have internet access. Getting Access to Echo360 In order to use Echo360, a user must be granted access with a user name and password. Request access to the Echo360 services by visiting: Download Echo360 Once you have access to the Echo360 server, download the software to your local computer. Visit https://echo.colostate.edu to download the software. Login with your CSU ename and epassword Tip: The echo 360 software is available for download on a Mac or PC. Video Quality - If your webcam video will contain a lot of movement or needs fine detail choose Actual Size, otherwise you can choose Smaller Size (Mac) or Quarter Size (Windows). d. Click on the OK button when finished. e. Once you close the Configure dialog box, the Echo360 screen window will display so that you can test your settings and change them, if necessary. Adapted with permission from Echo 360 Personal Capture. College of Charleston, SC August

From the Echo window, verify that the device settings you plan to use are selected, located in the lower toolbar of the window. If you enabled your audio device, then you will see a green bar on the left side of the window displaying the audio level as you speak. If you enabled your webcam device, then the camera view will display on the right side of the window. In the example above, the webcam is disabled. 2. Before you begin recording check the boxes next to what you wish to record. a. You can record audio only (no screencast or webcam) by checking only the box next to the microphone icon. b. You can record audio and screencast only (no webcam) by checking only the boxes next to the microphone icon and the screen icon. c. You can record audio, screencast and webcam by checking all three check boxes. d. You cannot record only audio/webcam without the screencast. Recording 1. Once all the configurations for screen capture are set, start your recording by clicking on the Start Capture Button. Tip: It helps to stay focused and reduce editing if you have all of your presentations, websites and lecture materials already open and easily accessible on your computer prior to clicking the Start Recording button. 2. You will get a 5 second countdown window to prepare, then your recording will begin. An Echo360 icon will appear in your system tray (Windows, in the lower right of your monitor or Mac, in the upper right of your monitor). Shortcut Keys: 3. Conduct your demonstration, lecture, etc. as you would like it recorded. Note: Pause and Resume your recording, if necessary. Echo will make the transition between Pause and Resume seamless. Tip: If you mess up or have a long delay while you think during the recording, then just leave the capture running. You can easily edit and cut out these mistakes and pauses. Adapted with permission from Echo 360 Personal Capture. College of Charleston, SC August

Tip: recordings must be longer than 15 seconds in order to be saved. 4. Click on Stop Recording from the Echo icon in your system tray or use the shortcut keys of Alt F2-Windows or Control 8-Mac. 5. You will now be placed in the Edit Recording area. Editing a Recording Once you stop a recording, Echo will navigate you to the Edit Recording window. From the Edit Recording window, you can play back your video and/or make minor edits such as cutting a segment of your recording. Adapted with permission from Echo 360 Personal Capture. College of Charleston, SC August

Tip: Another way to access the View/Edit tools for any recording on your computer: click on the My Recordings button, Echo will navigate you to Total Recordings window. Tip: This does not CUT the recording until you click on the Apply Edits button. 3. To Cut a Segment: a. Click and drag the Orange Mark In arrow (the first of the two Mark arrows on the timeline, see image above) to the beginning of where you want to start the cut of the clip. b. Click and drag the Orange Mark Out arrow (the second of the two Mark arrows on the timeline, see image above) to the end of where the clip should be cut The area between the two sliders will turn light blue. This is the area that will be deleted when the Cut icon is selected (see image below). Adapted with permission from Echo 360 Personal Capture. College of Charleston, SC August

c. Click the Cut (scissors) icon to delete the segment of the recording that is marked. Note: the segment of the recording will be removed but the remaining clips on the timeline will not appear to move together. This is normal. 4. To Clear or Undo a Cut: a. To undo a specific cut, double-click in the gray area on the timeline, between the markers, where the recording was located. This will bring the segment back to that portion of the recording. b. To clear all of the cuts and put the recording back to its original state, click on Clear Cuts button. 5. Give the Recording a Title: a. Next to Title field, located in the upper left corner of the screen, type in the title of your recording. b. Click on the Apply Edits button at the base of the window to save the Title. 19 Tips When recording, determine where you are going to look (either at the camera or at the screen) and try to stay with that decision. Looking around can be distracting for the viewer. Remember that these initial recordings are being stored on your computer so make sure you have enough available drive space. To help you estimate the required space here are a few guidelines for a 10 minute recording:: Recording Configuration File Size Video and Screencast - Actual Size Video and Screencast - Quarter/Smaller Size Audio only and Screencast - Actual Size Audio only and Screencast - Quarter/Smaller Size MB MB MB MB When recording screencasts with small text, such as webpages and/or Word documents, record the screen at Actual Size. Quarter/Smaller size makes the text unreadable. Adapted with permission from Echo 360 Personal Capture. College of Charleston, SC August
