1 D2L to Panopto v4.7 Student Viewing and Recording PC Instructions Admin: Joe Lipari Important: You must use Firefox as your browser. Silverlight, a Microsoft product must be downloaded and installed on your computer to take full advantage of the viewing features in Panopto. Please install if prompted. Log in to D2L Open your class. Click on the Panopto Portal module When you click on the Panopto link in D2L for the first time, Panopto will automatically create an account based on your D2L login and St. Kate s authentication. Note: If you had a previous Panopto login, that user name and password will not work with this method of accessing Panopto via D2L. The Panopto folder for your class will appear at the top of the page.

2 Professor s recordings are placed and viewed in the Class folder. To view the video recording, click on either the Thumbnail or the blue Title of the recording. The video will open in a new tab/window. Important: Panopto works using a website to display and gain access to recordings. Silverlight, a Microsoft product may need to be downloaded and installed on your computer to take full advantage of the viewing features in Panopto. o In addition, recording software can be downloaded to create content.

3 Drop Box Access Panopto Drop Boxes allow students to record presentations. When your professor creates a drop box, you will be allowed to download the recording software and record a video to that specific folder. To get to the Drop Box, click on the name of the folder. This will reveal a drop down list. Click on the arrow after the folder name to reveal the student [Drop Box] Click on the Drop Box sub-folder. Student recordings are viewed in the [drop box] folder.

4 Download the Panopto Windows recorder Note: You will only be able to download the recorder if you have been given permission to record materials for class. To download the recorder, click on the Create button in the middle of the page. Click on Record a new session. If you already have the Panopto Recorder installed on your PC, Click Launch Recorder.

5 Note: If you don t have the Panopto Recorder software, choose the correct installer. Since these are the instructions for a PC, choose the Windows download. This will start the download process. Click on Save file Click the Download arrow in Firefox. Click the panoptorecorder.exe file Click Run

6 Click Next Click install PC only: After you have downloaded and installed Panopto, a shortcut will be placed on your desktop and the software will open. You will be accessing the recording software from the D2L/Panopto link, so close this login page. Follow the normal protocol for downloading and installing software on your computer. Note: If you need assistance, call the help desk

7 Launching the Panopto Recorder Click on the Create button Launch the Recorder by clicking on the Record a new session button. Click OK to open the Panopto Recorder. This starts the software and automatically logs you in to the recorder.

8 The recorder will open and appear this way on a PC: Confirm you are logged in with your Panoptod2l\username Panopto should recognize you as a student and open the correct drop box folder for your class. In some circumstances the folder may be set to (Offline Recording). Click on the down arrow to select the [Drop box] folder of the course where you want your video to be uploaded. If you have more than one folder, select the correct folder for the class, and then click Add New Session Note: You must select a folder before begining so your recording will automatically upload to the website.

9 Record Settings After you click Add New Session you will be taken back to the Primary Source window and the drop box folder will appear in the Folder Name The box to the right of Record a new session called: is where the default name of your video is located (as the day, date and time of your recording). Change the name of your session either by highlighting the date and typing in a new name. Or click on either end of the date and enter a name along with the date/timestamp. This method may help your students find a lecture easier. In this example the professor had his students include their name, class due date, and the time stamp when they recorded the video. For example: Katie, for Oct 4, recorded Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 3:56:27 PM

10 Primary Source window Audio recording levels are set by clicking and dragging the volume control up or down. Note: Adjust the levels to peak at the sixth green bar. An occasional peak in the yellow is OK, but the audio will distort if your levels peak in the red. ***On the left side of the page is the Primary Source. Select your Video camera source from the drop down menu. Select your Audio microphone source from the drop down menu. Select your Quality level: - Standard / High / Ultra (Do not use Ultra unless you have a powerful computer.) Make sure your see video and confirm you are getting audio by checking the meter on the right side of the picture. Secondary Source Window If you are using a PowerPoint make sure the Capture PowerPoint box is selected. If you would like to show the desktop, show a website or demonstrate other software programs, make sure Capture Primary Screen is selected.

11 On the bottom of the page use the following settings for the Secondary Capture Source: Max Resolution 1024 x 768 Bit Rate(kbps) 250 for PowerPoint or (Set bit rate to 500 for Screen Capture) Frame Rate 4 f for PowerPoint (Set the frame rate to 15f for Screen Capture) Click Caution: Higher frame rate can cause audio/video synchronization issues, keep the frame rate lower unless needed for the screen capture mode. Note: All settings will be saved when you log in and reopen the recoder on the same computer, however, if you use another computer you will need to reset your parameters. To record video only uncheck all of the boxes. Click on the large Red Record button; confirm the recording has started. The word Recording and a time counter will appear.

12 When your recording is complete, click Stop Click OK to go to the Recording Status screen

13 This Recording Status screen will indicate the recording is being uploaded to the hosted site Green = Data Uploading Yellow = Confirmation of Data Wait until both bars of the Upload Progress are complete before shutting down your computer. If the upload is accidentally interrupted, it will resume when you start your computer again. When will my recording be ready? Depending on the length of the recording, there will be a delay of several minutes to a couple of hours before you will be able to view the recording; delays can be due to web traffic and processing time at the Panopto Hosted site. Note: Average time for a 1 hour recording is in the range of 15 to 30 minutes before it is ready to be viewed. Shorter recording should take less time process. Panopto Website via D2L Panopto Video Portal To view the video recording, go back to D2L and the Panopto Video Portal link, click on either the Thumbnail or the Title of the recording. The video will open in a new tab/window

14 Create New Recording Click on the Create New recording tab to immediately start a new session. This will take you back to the Panopto Recorder. Note: After your upload begins you can return to the Create New Recording tab and start a new session before the upload is complete. Uploading of data occurs independently of recording sessions. *************************************************************************************

15 Setting up your Microphone in Windows This step is usually reqired when you plug a new microphone into your computer. Note: If your device does not show up in Panopto your mic is not enabled and you will need to take the following steps before setting the audio levels. 1. Right click on the "speaker" icon (lower right corner) 2. Click on "Recording devices" -The Sound window will open. 3. Right click on the Mic you will use to record your audio. In this example the HD Pro Webcam mic is selected. 4. Select Enable 5. Right click again on the mic and select - Set as default device Note: You will need to close and re-open the Panopto Recorder for these changes to take effect.
